As the National Transitional Justice Symposium held in February from 20-21, 2024 demonstrated, there are pathways for implementing Uganda Transitional Justice Policy. Various communities in Uganda need to be guided to lasting peace and stability by resolving legacies of past violence and multi-layered grievances stemming from egregious human rights violations.  Through a plurality of local justice efforts and accountability mechanisms consistent with judicial sovereignty, healing and reconciling communities that suffered conflict and mass violations can rebuild broken lives and relationships. It will also be necessary to make effective and unambiguous efforts and commitments in order to develop a comprehensive reparations framework.

#Nuclear ☢️ #energy is becoming a new policy strategy for fostering global partnerships, particularly with the Global South. #Russia 🇷🇺 is making significant strides, with #Rosatom signing agreements in #BurkinaFaso 🇧🇫, #Mali 🇲🇱, and #Algeria 🇩🇿, as well as expanding the nuclear power plant in #Egypt 🇪🇬. Countries like #Kenya 🇰🇪, #Ghana 🇬🇭, #Uganda 🇺🇬, #Rwanda 🇷🇼, and #SouthAfrica 🇿🇦 are actively seeking nuclear solutions to address their energy needs. The U.S.-Africa Nuclear Energy Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, in August 2024, presents a strategic opportunity for the #USA 🇺🇸 to reengage. USA and 21 partner countries committing at #COP28 to triple their nuclear energy capacity, push the wheels for a new trajectory. The ones demonized energy policy pushed USA to work on its domestic plan, which includes new #EPA fast-track policies, converting coal plants to nuclear (c2n), and certifying innovative nuclear technologies. Those innovations and scale of production can bring back America to global markets to assist other nations to transition to more sustainable fuel while allowing them still to grow. Energy is crucial for any advancement, and now with #africa’s needs to power its future and achieve sustainability goals, America can come back to this geostrategic game.

From my recent trip to South Sudan. Statement by USAID National Security Director Colin Thomas-Jensen during his visit to Juba, May 21-24, 2024: I came to Juba May 21-24 with my colleagues Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Enrique Roig and USAID Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator Mark Billera. The purpose of our trip is to call for urgent action to create the conditions necessary for genuine and peaceful elections. These include addressing the lack of political and civic space, politically neutral and unified forces, and full funding and operationalization of necessary electoral institutions. To achieve this, we urge the launch of direct dialogue among transitional government leaders, including President Kiir, First Vice President Machar, and all members of the presidency, with the objective of making genuine and peaceful elections possible. Such dialogue would send an important signal to the South Sudanese people and to donor countries that South Sudan’s leaders are committed to peace and the rejection of violence as a tool for political competition. We also urge the full and immediate implementation of exemptions for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, and diplomatic missions. Those who seek to impose taxes, fees, and other inappropriate costs on humanitarian assistance are diverting aid away from South Sudanese people in need. U.S. engagement in South Sudan began decades ago. Its endurance is based on values including peace, human rights, democracy, and people’s right to choose leaders who respond to the needs of the South Sudanese people. My insights on Haiti, shared during briefings at the U.S. Congress and U.S.G. Agencies here in DC in the last few weeks, have been very much in line with Georges Fauriol's analysis. Haiti is at a crossroads, and there is indeed a need for U.S. leadership in advancing sustainable peace and good governance. To Georges' recommendations, I would just add: 1) Strengthening oversight of both the Haitian transitional authorities and the Multinational Security Support Mission, by setting verifiable benchmarks and accountability systems to ensure fair play and achieving milestones; and 2) Promoting some soul-searching among foreign commentators and media outlets, who exacerbate the crisis by legitimizing gang leaders, thus undermining efforts to restore stability.  The agenda-setting power of the media comes with the responsibility to refrain from amplifying sensationalism and signal boosting those who have inflicted suffering and destruction at an unimaginable scale.

We are thrilled to announce the release of the pivotal report, "Disability Dimension in Eswatini's National Management Information System", a collaborative effort spearheaded by UNICEF and supported by the Africa Disability Alliance, and under the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Fund. This report marks an advancement in our commitment to ensuring the inclusivity and well-being of persons with disabilities in Eswatini. In Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, extra-constitutional seizures of power have led to grave outcomes for citizens, including a sharp rise in volatility and violence. The simple facts remain: stability, economic opportunity, and citizen agency are more likely under democratically-oriented governments (despite their flaws).

Besides the overarching mission of the U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) to elevate the work of African entrepreneurs and their enterprises, few things bring me more joy than our grant-signing ceremonies with those in whom we invest! Last week I had the pleasure of holding such a ceremony with Destiny Women Inc (DWI), a women-led cassava cultivating and processing organization. This year, they successfully secured a $100K USADF-AWEP grant to enhance the livelihoods of their members by increasing yields, revenue, and market reach across Liberia. 🇱🇷 In USADF’s work to support smallholder farmers and reach grassroots communities, every dollar leaves an impact. In this instance, the grant will empower disadvantaged women through training in cassava production, enabling them to generate income and foster self-sufficiency and independence. 📈 #US #Africa #Liberia #Partnership #WomensEmpowerpent #Agriculture #EconomicDevelopment

Yesterday, Monday, July 8th, I participated in the Chad Economic Update 2024 in Ndjamena. This report focuses on enhancing the economic inclusion of refugees from the Sudanese crisis. It also presents recent developments and perspectives on Chad’s economy.
