I have to talk more about the Walmart Roblox physical marketplace powered by Sawhorse Productions Nic Hill As you know since 2009 I have being in the space of immersive technologies, and the promise of connected products was out there since then. But enabling the right infrastructure is never easy - specially thinking of mass adoption. Innovation becomes utility when it solves a problem for many, and it is adopted by a multitude with the minimum friction possible. Walmart Discovered phygital marketplace is a bespoke use case where a powerful retail giant take the lead in using games to empower communities, and eventually create a path for physical products consumption. It is straight forward experience, part of the world of Gen-alphas on Roblox. Some personal take aways from this launch: • games are major tool for comms with next gen • bring your product inside a tool your customers like •leverage your community power •expand e-commerce behind the scrolling 2D standards •make it fun! Well done to all involved and once again, special kudos to Justin Breton 🌸

"It's usually not good news when a mall loses an anchor.." Macy's new CEO Tony Spring commented on the recent news of plans to close up to 150 stores because they were built "for a different era". This podcast with Retail Dive's Cara Salpini was full of great insights and discussion. I've linked to the article, podcast, and an inside look at a store closing below. 👉Here are a few of the conversational insights that really jumped out at me.👈 There were really two eras of the department store: In the 19th century these stores were located in a mid- or downtown prominent address, in a nice building with intentional architecture, and shopping was an experience and a destination not a transaction. This gave way to the plethora of mall developments as downtowns were neglected as a shopping destinations, cars in suburbia proliferated and malls with department stores as their anchors multiplied. But there were too many malls built for that era and too many department stores. The current Macy's strategy may involve a pivot towards investing in off price business and new small format stores, as well as higher end Bloomingdale's, - like a barbell approach. The middle retailer and brand appears to be downsizing, just as the American middle class is shrinking. Departments of the department store have counterparts in the mall, and if you are going to a mall you are likely going to many of the specialty retailers and not necessarily buying a number of different items across categories. If you are, you may be thinking about competitors such as Target or Walmart instead. Department stores in general may have at least partially missed out on the promise of nicer displays, interesting and engaging merchandising, better customer service, and immersive experiences. But there is a big opportunity here: the small format may be able to raise the bar on more thoughtful, themed merchandising experiences. Innovations like the Story store in Chelsea could become more scalable and successful. By partnering with retailers who are evaluating new plans for new formats, new strategies for new demographics, and new immersive experiences tied to innovative merchandising with #retailanalytics and our ecosystem partners, we are positioned to help. I am personally looking forward to seeing how we can help this industry evolve into the third era of innovation in #retail. Great topic and conversation. Thanks Andrew. Yes, personalisation works. 40%+ growth. It’s evolving. It’s a bright future that offers individualised shopper experiences that are relevant, compelling, inspiring and respectful to data privacy. Bring on GDPR. Yes AI will play a huge role. It already is. Personalisation requires shoppers to be identified and have a profile, both with consent. However a potential greater growth opportunity is to ‘tailor’ messaging and the shopper experience where 80%+ of retailers revenue is - the physical stores, during the attract, explore and engage stages of the customer journey. Love to see this personalisation conversation extend to localisation and tailored shopper experiences in the anonymous space, arguably the greater opportunity for growth through AI powered digital engagement. Our industry is making gains here. Personalization is evolving. Still need to innovate faster, embrace test & learn at a greater rate to realise the growth potential. Now with two years of negative or at best flat growth in eCommerce, the focus has very much changed to profitability. And, for many retailers, it's an existential problem. We’ve seen major retailers and brands fail due to lack of profitability. We all need to learn from this and work out how we can do more, with less. A month or so back, Michael and I together with Mark and David had the opportunity to delve into why focusing on efficiency has become paramount for retailers. With digital growth stabilising post-pandemic, efficiency emerges as one of the key driver of sustainable profitability. In this, the sixth episode in this season's Multichannel Success Podcast, we share our thoughts on the shift from explosive digital growth to strategic investment decisions that improve the bottom-line. With the crucial role of technology in improving efficiency, we also discuss how #eCommerce integration, reducing time to market, and managing product information are key to staying competitive. Plus, we touch on the importance of company culture and employee experience in driving efficiency. Thanks to WWD for the time and inclusion in this piece! I love this topic. For retailers, new emerging Instant Commerce programs are awesome and an obvious response to consumer demand. ❓Who doesn't want to be able to find the product you want online and get it delivered to you in the same day? 🏔️The challenge is (of course) surfacing real time inventory data from your stores and warehouses to search and 3P channel programs like Google Local Inventory Ads (search), Amazon Today and Walmart LocalFinds, Instacart and Doordash... and syncing resulting orders /returns/etc while providing tools, enablement and training to the in-store teams (where necessary). 🤔 No doubt the partnerships between social commerce channels and last mile delivery are next up (since they don't have their own native fleets... so far).
