The first day’s proceedings commenced with opening remarks by Mr. NJ Ayuk JD, MBA. Executive Chairperson of the African Energy Chamber, emphasizing the forum's significance in bolstering resilience within Africa's oil and natural gas sectors. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) led by Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk JD, MBA. – met with Sonangol CEO Sebastião Gaspar Martins in Luanda this week, where the parties discussed Sonangol’s vision for the oil and gas industry. Martins is speaking at the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference this November – Africa’s premier energy event, hosted in Cape Town. The AEC believes that Sonangol is a strategic partner for Angola’s oil and gas industry and will continue to play a major role in facilitating investment and driving project developments. With a focus on expanding exploration and production, the company plays a critical role in Angola’s efforts to boost its oil and gas industry and bolster economic growth. Angola aims to produce 1.1 million barrels of oil per day (bpd) by 2027, with plans to reach two million bpd in the long-term. At the same time, the country aims to increase the share of natural gas in the energy mix to 25% by 2025, highlighting strategic opportunities for foreign investors and project developers. To achieve these goals, the country’s NOC Sonangol has undergone a transformation – underpinned by a privatization initiative spearheaded by the government. Now, Sonangol has emerged as a strong and reliable partner for oil and gas companies, and is committed to ushering in a new era of economic growth on the back of oil and gas development.

RE : Power Generation Drops 32.31% to 2,775MW The attention of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has been drawn to false media reports making the rounds that power generation on Thursday, April 11, 2024, dropped by 32.31% to 2,775MW. TCN wishes to state unequivocally that such reports are false and misleading as they do not represent the true generation performance data released by the National Electricity System Operator, a subset of the company, on the stated date. It is important to state that the lowest generation recorded on Thursday, April 11, 2024, was 3586.11MW at 18:00 hours, while peak generation was 4122.43MW at 23:59hrs While 2,775MW was allocated to the 11 Distribution Companies (DISCOs) during the Load Allocation review at 17:40hours of Thursday, April 11, 2024, following the tripping of 3 units from the grid, it does not represent the total available generation on the grid. Moreover, allocations to the DISCOs rose to 2976MW and 3155MW during the Load Allocation review at 18:43hours and 20:02hours of April 11, 2024, respectively. It should be noted that the total available generation on the grid is calculated by adding the sum total of energy delivered to the DISCOs and exempted loads (majorly bilateral contracted load). The media are our critical partners in the efforts to improve electricity supply in the nation. In an exciting offering, there are a total of 12 new oil blocks and seven deep offshore assets from the previous bid round available. ICYMI: African Energy Chamber Vice President Verner Ayukegba participated in an interview on ARISE News discussing the recent trends in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry ahead of the African Energy Chamber (AEC) Nigerian roadshow. Mr Ayukegba highlighted a number of exciting developments in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, which have the potential to stimulate investments in #Nigeria and ultimately enhance Africa’s energy potential. The Chamber is closely monitoring Oando taking over ENI assets in Nigeria which will lead to a significant increase in Oando’s production in Nigeria by 100%, amounting to about 50 thousand barrels a day. On the challenges facing the oil and gas sector in Nigeria, Mr Ayukegba noted the challenge posed by Nigeria’s currency devaluation and the absence of critical capital which hinders effective development within the industry. Mr Ayukegba reemphasised the need for an enabling environment as a catalyst for investment while highlighting that the recent trends pioneered by indigenous oil companies attest to Nigeria’s readiness for business. Consequently, Mr Ayukekba underscores the need to develop infrastructure for the processing of gas as it has the potential to guarantee cheaper access to power for the people while advancing industry in Nigeria. Very interesting project for Dalbit and Tanzania! Compressed natural gas (CNG) is an alternative fuel for vehicles with environmental and economic benefits. It is a cleaner fuel that produces lower carbons and emissions (~10%) than gasoline or gasoil, results in longer engine life, and is considerably less expensive. CNG is locally produced and therefore improves energy security and reduce reliance on foreign oil. For a country like Tanzania, the use of CNG can solve to some extent the energy trilemna of security, affordability and sustainability!

Nigeria's first Grid-connected Battery Storage is in the making. Reeling in pain in my sick bed earlier this month, I came across some intriguing news: ESS, Inc., an Iron Flow battery company, will supply Sapele Power Plc (IPP) with a 1MW/8MWh capacity iron flow long-duration Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Partly financed by the Export-Import Bank of the United States, the BESS solution to Sapele IPP will enable load smoothing, peak demand shifting, and ramp up and down, all ancillary services in Nigeria's first grid-connected BESS project (Stand to be corrected). While this is a novelty technology in the Nigerian electricity space, the business model behind this investment is clear, as Sapele IPP is chasing the ancillary market with intentionality in an audacious and unprecedented move. Historically, the Sapele Power plant has underperformed compared to its "contemporaries" from NEPA days in the energy market. The plant's availability factor has consistently been below 15% (Generating <100MW on average vs 720MW installed capacity) The capacity and energy market dominates the PPA in the NESI, with a seemingly non-existent ancillary services market (Ops reserves, FCAS, FFR, Black Start, Inertia, etc.). Sapele IPP's investment in the BESS solution to support ramp up and down, "synthetic" spinning reserve and supplemental signal is a new but exciting development. The BESS may also provide dispatchable power for grid frequency augmentation (FCAS or FFR) banking on stranded assets like the nearby Sapele NIPP for charging and possibly competitive ancillary services contract rates. Incorporating BESS into the national grid will herald a wave of grid-connected VREs, which can help solve many issues by localizing capacity and generation and alleviating issues of T-line vandalism. Significant chaos-forming changes are coming with the unbundling of the TRANSMISSION COMPANY OF NIGERIA to SO and TSP, and state electricity framework development necessitates a fortification of the electricity ancillary services market, which Sapele may be positioning for. While much of this is speculative, introducing BESS into the NESI undoubtedly signals something new. Whatever it is, it is a good sign for the industry's development. Great experience today moderating  "Strategic investments: Creating opportunities in Africa’s energy system" at the  #IAE2024 event in Paris. So much was covered: - Africa's attractiveness is assessed by investors and 🔊 best returns still make the trick! With a lot of capital coming to Africa from outside the continent, but competition for investment is fierce. - For a project to become bankable, many conditions have to be met and bankable "means different things to different people". - Some requirements: existence of legal and contractual frameworks at the core, but also having procurement laws, process to acquire land, solid institutions, local private companies, technical expertise, environmental studies, the right developer for the right project... - Convergence of private and public capital is required, as well as recognition that private capital is key! - Introduction of carbon taxes to keep (at least part of) the rent in #Africa. - Role of utilities is changing and commoditizing power could unlock barriers and increase access. And so much more to be discussed. I hope conversations will continue during the 2-days event. I agree with you Osam. In Africa gas is a significant resource we have to generate power. We need to utilize it more and minimize its waste by not flaring it. More gas infrsturucture need to be built to bring in the stranded gases from remote locations to market

The West African country has sought to leverage its immense hydrocarbon resources to position itself as a petroleum hub for the region. Pecan Phase 1A Poised to start commercial production in 2025, the First Phase of the Pecan Conventional Oil Field will involve the drilling of approximately five wells in ultra-deepwaters in the Gulf of Guinea. Atuabo Il Gas Processing Plant The $700 million Atuabo II Cas Processing Plant will have an initial capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day, which can be expanded to 300 million standard cubic feet per day upon completion in 2025. Tema VI Oil Storage Facility With a storage capacity of 1.9 billion barrels of oil, the Tema VI Oil Storage Facility is expected to become operational in 2024. Tema Floating LNG Plant Under construction in Ghana’s capital city of Accra, the Tema Floating LNG Plant will include the requisite infrastructure to import, store, regasify and deliver LNG to off-takers in the Greater Accra Area. Tema-Akosombo Il Pipeline Due to connect the Tema Oil Refinery in the Greater Accra Region to the Akosombo Terminal in the country’s Eastern Region, the Tema-Akosombo I| Pipeline will span 70km and will significantly support the expansion of oil storage capacity in Chana. #energy #oilandgas #cosworld #ghana
