What are the best practices for ensuring underground structure stability?
One overlooked and most often missing from site investigation, is the underground utility infrastructure. From a global perspective, lack of a comprehensive subsurface utility investigations results in many billions in negative public and private economic impacts, delay claims large settlements, cost overruns, health and safety risks. For the past 35 years, countries like United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Malaysia and Ecuador has been performing Subsurface Utility Engineering-SUE during planning, engineering/design and construction per their countries SUE standard guidelines.

BSI PAS 128, Specification for underground utility detection, verification and location
British Standards Institution
PAS 128 aims to provide a clear and unambiguous provision for those engaged in the detection, verification and location of active, abandoned, redundant or unknown utilities. It is applicable to surveyors, geophysicists or subsurface utility engineers as well as engineers, constructors, project managers and utility owners who are responsible for recording information about underground utilities.

It is applicable to surveyors, geophysicists or subsurface utility engineers as well as engineers, constructors, project managers and utility owners who are responsible for recording information about underground utilities.
Utility mapping occurs where ground investigation, borehole, trial pit works and other construction works are proposed. The survey conforming to PAS 128 can then be used as an indicator of the presence or absence of underground utilities before conducting further ground investigation prior to breaking ground.
Some features of PAS 128:
•Applies to active, abandoned, redundant or unknown underground utilities in urban or rural areas
•Sets out the accuracy/quality of the data captured and a means by which to assess confidence in it
•Applies to utilities buried no deeper than three metres
It covers:
•Project planning and scoping process
•Classification system for quality levels
•Desktop utility records search
•Detection, verification and location

Mapping the Underworld
Technical Advisor
Involved with Mapping the Underworld since 2008 when research began on the full research project to develop a multi-sensor location device. Mapping the Underworld (MTU) is an ambitious 10-year research programme largely funded by the EPSRC. The problems associated with inaccurate location of buried pipes and cables are serious and are rapidly worsening due to increasing traffic congestion in major urban areas.
