Pumped storage around the world continues to grow, but in specific geographic locations (as you would expect). Grid operators in the U.S. Midwest have been restricting wind generation due to oversupply and congestion on the grid. In 2023, grid operators curtailed an hourly average of 800 MW of wind generation in the Midwest. Curtailment is when electricity generation is deliberately reduced below its maximum generational potential. The queue is indicative of what is to come in terms of future resources. While it is inflated and backlogged, it is very illustrative of where the resource mix is headed. Some great stats from the queue that Ryan Wiser and the Berkeley Lab team highlighted: 🔹 Nearly all solar in CA has BESS as a hybrid resource 🔹 Most solar in the West has BESS as a hybrid resource 🔹 Over half of all solar queue requests include BESS as a hybrid resource 🔹 Offshore wind requests are picking up (and coming online) 🔹 Gas (and hybrid gas) are still present 🔹 Other resource types are nearly non-existent currently Hybrid resources are the (near) future. Rooftop solar continues. Without Act 10, the current net metering policy remains in place unless the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) were to make changes based on the results of a comprehensive study and public commentary.

🚨 PJM Power Auction Results: A Sharp Increase in Prices! 🚨 The recent annual power market auction by PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. electrical grid operator, revealed a striking surge in prices—up more than 800% compared to last year. The auction for the 2025-2026 period resulted in prices landing at $269.92 per megawatt-day, a significant jump from $28.92 per megawatt-day last year. 📈 As supply tightens and demand grows, this sharp increase highlights the need for investment in resources to ensure a balanced supply-demand equation. Escalante Solar Project Achieves Commercial Operation, Marks Major Milestone in New Mexico’s Clean Energy Transition Origis Energy and Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association have announced that the Escalante Solar project has commenced commercial operations. Built on the site of the decommissioned 253-MWac coal-fired Escalante Station near Grants, New Mexico, the solar facility began generating carbon-free electricity. The new solar project, producing 200 MWac of clean energy, is expected to power approximately 63,000 homes. Countries that have a coast have the potential for marine power generation - tidal or other. Here is an outline of the potential for Alaska by National Renewable Energy Laboratory but I do think it would be interesting to see this for NZ - I have seen sections by Penn State University and Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge. (Phillip Mack (?) 60kW/m on South Island and some interesting work on Cook Straights- "potentially one of the best sites in the world for generating power from tidal currents"). #marine #renewableenergy #generation https://lnkd.in/gZDzVGze
