I can't say enough times that if you're wondering how military families are doing these days this is the place you're going to get answers. The survey was conducted between October and December 2023 so it is the most up-to-date information we have. They included transition information in this year's questions which I absolutely loved. I'm not one to say, "I told you so..." but the responses are a cry for better resources, support, and a better path when transitioning out of active-duty military life. I'm working on a multiyear project on augmenting the Army's warfighting culture at the strategic level. Phase I is identifying the core attributes of organizations and leaders successful at the strategic level of warfighting. At this point I'm developing a candidate list of the core attributes. Here's what I have at this point: A laser like focus on their primary missions and minimize the degree to which secondary missions and requirements detract from them. Understanding the enemy / strategic empathy (Kasserine as a case study of the absence of this; many Vietnam examples as well) Manage complexity in vertical and horizontal dimensions (i.e. consider second and third order effects, and future ones) Dynamic narrative shaping Network building

More military retirement prep stories: Back in 2008/2009, I spent the better part of a year in southern Afghanistan as part of a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT). I learned something about myself: I couldn't sleep the night before a mission. I'd analyze every little detail in my head. Was my threat analysis accurate? Did we prep the vehicle? Were my weapons ready? What would we do in XYZ situation? But I was fine on mission day. So how does this relate 15 years ago? I'm in the lead up to skillbridge applications & interviews and I find myself over analyzing every detail. Did I look at the right sites? Did I adjust my resume for the job? Did I reach back out to the PM? Etc, etc. I'll be fine when it's go-time, but man...my brain needs to slow down right now.

Today the ISR Task Force partnered with WTOP News, the Federal News Network, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, United States Space Force, and Planet Federal to discuss the critical topic of Broad Area Management and its impact on the safety and security of our nation. In the round table discussion, we touched on the imperative of #teamwork in Integrated Deterrence while also discussing some of the more tangible ways the services are investing in solutions to deliver enhanced situational understanding around the world. The US Army Intelligence enterprise, under the direction of Lieutenant General Tony Hale, is working hard to deliver horizontally integrated capabilities at a pace and scale that matches the tempo of the modern operational environment. To optimize these systems, we’ve been directed to develop strategies for wide-adoption and implementation of Artificial Intelligence capabilities into human-centric workflows. Soon the world currency will be measured in TPUs and GPUs. #Data centricity is a thing, and embracing it is what separates visionary leaders from everyone else. We wrap up this week with a conversation with Congressman Ken Calvert (R-CA) - a partner on Capitol Hill who is “all in” on AI investments.

ICYMI, yesterday we wrapped up the 2024 US Army Intelligence and Security Enterprise Industry Day with the help from our friends at AFCEA International. Among the highlights of the event: The >400 Industry teammates in attendance heard from the 48th G-2 of the Army, Lieutenant General Tony Hale, as he provided a threat update highlighting the challenges of operating in this volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world. We also heard a big vision outlining his call to action - giving us a North Star to guide us toward clarity in the chaos. #Together we will tackle the challenges of horizontally integrating intelligence capabilities to ensure we stand ready to perform our 24/7 intel mission around the globe. And we will never forget that our profession exists for only one reason: to assist Commanders in making more decisions, faster ones, and better ones.

Uncertainty I know it is an odd intro to a post but is a topic I have been dwelling on currently as I transition to the civilian sector. In the military we live and operate in VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and uncertainity). By default humans don't like uncertainity in their lives and in their work. The familiar is preferred. Life is constantly changing around us and as leaders we have to provide direction and vision to not just survive but thrive in the VUCA world. We have to put edges on the problem to solve it. Start taking the problem apart piece by piece especially complex problems. A friend of mines favorite quote is from General Eric Shinseki the former Chief of Staff of the Army. “If you dislike change, you're going to dislike irrelevance even more.” The choice is clear irrelevance or change. I choose to embrace change and work hard to solve the problem.
