"In July 2023, at a construction site in Kansas City, Missouri, 29 men and three women started their workday in an unusual way: by swallowing a pill-sized data-collection device. The devices would monitor their body temperature as they labored in heat that averaged around 88 degrees, with 50 to 70% humidity. The results were alarming. Over three days of data collection, 43% of workers’ body temperature reached 100.4 degrees—the level of a low-grade fever, the University of New Mexico–led study found. And 4% of workers exceeded 101.3 degrees." It's interesting looking back basically 10 years ago the thought of public speaking would have paralyzed me with complete fear. Yet today is a really special day that I get to share my voice today helping people in the Louisville engineering community with their inner leadership based on my Lion Attitude system. In the first half of the I+M+P+A+C=T formula the focus is on Purpose which is based on Intention + Motivation. Phase 2 of the system is focused on a routine I have refined and been doing for 4 years now in The Morning Start Up. The overall goal of The Morning Start Up is to be working on yourself from an inner leadership standpoint to keep your built Purpose strong. This requires Intention + Motivation on a daily basis putting in the work on yourself in the following areas: Gratitude Reading Meditation Exercise & Nutrition Journaling 5AM Club When you aren't focusing on yourself on a daily basis, over time your Intention + Motivation weakens with Purpose fading away. You can't create the I+M+P+A+C=T formula in overall leadership without it and eventually any outer leadership looks like these 2 names: Attacker (Only Action Focused) Con-Artist (Only Connection Focused) Phase 2 is also tied to Emotional Intelligence with the focus of the Morning Start up being Self Management. People that work on themselves have a strong daily ability to handle stressful situations with better self regulation. In the US they’re trying to state a common definition of net-zero building to help level out policies that currently vary from state to state. A new Harris poll was published yesterday. The Morning Brew did a good job explaining the discrepancy between how well the public thinks the economy is doing verse how well the economy is actually doing. Among the 2,000+ participants in the survey: 56% think the US is currently experiencing a recession, and 55% believe the economy is shrinking. (GDP—a key measure of economic activity—is growing.) 72% believe inflation is going up. (It’s more than halved from a 2022 peak of 9.1% and is hovering between 3% and 4%.) 49% think the current unemployment rate is at a 50-year high. (It’s near a 50-year low.) 49% believe the S&P 500 is on the decline. (It’s risen more than 12% this year, and Wall Street is raising its expectations for the index’s year-end performance. The Dow also just made record gains.) Why is reality missing so many Americans? Even though inflation is finally easing, the average cost of groceries, housing, and other consumer needs has soared over the past few years. About two-thirds of the Harris poll respondents agreed that “it’s difficult to be happy about positive economic news when I feel financially squeezed each month.” Media coverage likely also shares the blame. Recent studies show that news coverage is becoming increasingly negative, especially regarding gas prices, a common harbinger of economic panic. Again, the pendulum is swinging back in our favor, but we are in a race for talent! Are we ready? Do we have a plan to improve onboarding and orientation? We need to look at 90-day retention rates and ensure we are not losing people before we even have chance for them to experience all of the positives of working in the construction industry! We can no longer say project schedules do not allow time for us to spend time with new field employees or that we do not have the resources. Progressive construction companies are finding ways, and they will capitalize on this influx of new people. #constructiontrains #committedtoexcellence #chooseconstruction
