You have to admit that the headline "Digital health resilience leads to brilliance" by Rock Health is a bit cheesy but when you look at the amount raised and number of deals, the future sounds more optimistic in H1 of 2024 than in the H1 of 2023. If you look at the Leading Value Propositions and Clinical Indications table you can see a #1 Treatment of disease at $1.1B. In the Clinical Indications the top 4 investments are in #mentalhealth, #cardiovascular, #oncology and #weightmanagement & #obesity. The upcoming trend of Food-as-Medicine or Food Care shows strength with $200M investment in Foodsmart. "The digital health sector continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Funding momentum (especially at the early stage) and the tapering of transition measures like unlabeled rounds hint that we might be returning to more “normal,” sustainable venture patterns." A new book, Crowded Out: The True Costs of Crowdfunding Healthcare by Nora Kenworthy, an associate professor of nursing and health studies at the University of Washington, Bothell, explores the dark realities of this phenomenon in impressive detail. Backed by data about what types of campaigns go viral and interviews with individuals who raised money for health expenses for themselves or others, Kenworthy makes a compelling case that health care crowdfunding creates what she calls “moral toxicities”: “harmful ideas” about health and morality which “suffuse our environments and can harm our health” in the same way that actual toxins do. These toxicities are familiar and thoroughly American—“rugged individualism” and “selective deservingness” are both destructive concepts, yet deeply engrained in the assumptions of our health care and welfare systems. https://lnkd.in/eKg8QMVy

Interesting study published in The Lancet, Regional Health The notion of providing data upon “reasonable request” has, paradoxically, turned into an inside joke and a meme in the scientific community, which highlights the gap between policy and practice. While the pretext often cited for this guarded approach is the protection of sensitive patient information—a concern universally respected—the reality frequently belies this justification. In many cases, accessing anonymized datasets becomes an insurmountable challenge even with no perceivable risk to patient privacy. In 2022, researchers in Croatia contacted 1792 authors to gauge whether their data were truly available upon request; 93% of authors ignored the email or denied sharing. Individual scientists often face mixed incentives for data sharing, influenced by research domain, methods, and resources, highlighting the need for more supportive infrastructures and clear benefits to encourage open science practices.' https://lnkd.in/en8tXTDx

Fair argument in favor of AI-enabled diagnosis. World Health Organization has even more alarming stats: Nearly 7 million children die due to misdiagnosis, even when their diseases are preventable. This is an excellent overview of the emerging field of digital therapeutic medicine and a new FDA approved application for depression. It's important to note that this technology is to be used in conjunction with traditional treatments like medication and therapy, yet is an exciting step in providing targeted therapies, with promising applications for other conditions, such as diabetes, Alzheimers, and Multiple Sclerosis. I wonder, too, about applications for social connection and "loneliness." Loneliness has no DSM code, yet it is a condition of epidemic proportions. Might we use technologies like this in creative ways as an impetus to addressing the epidemic of loneliness?
