For years at LUX, we've challenged labels and judgments faced by women in China. This year, we're going even further by challenging the labels women carry for a lifetime: THEIR NAMES. Names often reinforce biases, with boys expected to be strong and girls submissive. For instance, a common boy's name might be GUÓ WEI (Great Nation), while a girl's name could be WEI (Tiny). In celebration of our 100th anniversary, LUX has created 100 new powerful female names. With #InHerName, we invite Chinese women to embrace new names, becoming protagonists of their own stories and sparking a conversation around naming for the next generation. This initiative is a collective effort, in collaboration with Linguistics Professor Liu Yanchun. Let's redefine what it means to be a woman in China, one name at a time. Many Consumer Health players significantly underpefrom their growth footprint We observe a broad-based underperformance in CHC industry: Global Pure Players (mostly Kenvue, Sanofi…), FMCG incumbents, Private Labels and even many Dermo-Cosmetic specialists Reasons are multiple & granularly different for each type of player/ specific company but some common learnings emerge: - CHC is incredibly complex/ diverse/ heterogeneous/ fragmented & each CHC category requires a very different strategy & operating model to achieve/ sustain outperformance (this strategy/ operating model can even change dramatically according to the type of channel landscape) - The challenge is that too often CHC companies do not tailor/ differentiate enough their strategies/ operating models to take the full potential of their assets - When they do, they fail to adapt to the evolving environment (lowering barriers-to-entry, emergence of new players, new sales & marketing channels…) Time for all CHC participants to granularly understand success drivers per category/ market channel archetype within CHC & adapt to key shifts (channel shift/ fragmentation, lowering barriers-to-entry…) There is no profitable growth scarcity on CHC. This month The Benchmarking Company (https://lnkd.in/eS-pw3QR) explores beauty consumers' concerns about hair and scalp health in its latest Beauty by the Numbers. Beauty brands have responded en masse to help solve some of her most pressing concerns. With consumers leaning into the skinification of hair care, she’s relying on brand promises to enable healthier, smoother, shinier, and more moisturized-looking and feeling hair. In a recent primary study of 3,500+ U.S. female hair care buyers, The Benchmarking Company’s research reveals the hair and scalp concerns that top her list, which products she uses now, her hair care wish list (hello SPF!), and proof points that will turn even the most skeptical consumers into buyers.

I am reminded of a famous French song many years ago called “Capri, c’est fini”. The FTC’s most recent bid is worth reading very carefully : https://lnkd.in/dGqjJUjx It may not only put an end to Tapestry’s proposed acquisition of Capri, but it also signals a renewed focus on antitrust enforcement in the already complex process of M&A deals. The FTC decision also fuels the eternal debate on the core value of a luxury brand: is luxury linked to rarity or to authenticity? Interestingly, the FTC’s bid is based on a narrow definition of a marketing subset of the luxury market, saying that Tapestry and Capri compete in the “accessible luxury” market space. 🤔 I review business news from many sectors every morning, especially beauty... and then add in big changes in US cosmetic regulatory environment. This isn't likely isn't a going to be the most desirable of predictions but I expect some big contractions in the beauty industry in coming years. R&D (and product launches) will experience shrink and become more focused but regulatory, quality and analytical chemist positions will become vastly more important.
