"Unapologetically Leading: The Black Women's Mixtape" is more than a platform, it’s a vibe and a community where we celebrate the stories and journeys of Black women leaders. Through centering their narratives, we aim to inspire connections and uplift voices that are often overlooked or stereotypically defined. "Unapologetically Leading" amplifies Black women by giving them space to take center stage and own their narratives and how they are shown to the world. Why the play on the word mixtape? Because we hope to curate an authentic and transparent look at their experiences, perspectives, and insights, noting that each narrative will be different, similar to the diverse tracks on your favorite album/mixtape. Ultimately, "Unapologetically Leading: The Black Women's Mixtape" isn't just about sharing stories; it's about reclaiming agency, and redefining what it means to lead unapologetically as a Black woman in today's world. There is no question that the non-profit sector need a shake up. The system and cycle of grant funding is designed to keep organizations scrapping and scraping with hand to mouth funding, that means we are consisntently looking down instead of looking up, which limits our ability to truly work towards our missions. For Black led non profits this is especially true, and this is not even counting the enormous yet often unrecognized labor that Black women contribute to our field. Our work, encompassing both the seen and unseen efforts, is indispensable in driving transformative change and creating inclusive systems. Yet, the toll it exacts on our spirit, mental, and physical health cannot be overstated. Burn out is all too real. Great article.

Dear Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, I am writing to express my profound disappointment and anger regarding SHRM’s recent decision to remove “Equity” from the DE&I framework, reducing it to simply “Inclusion and Diversity.” This decision is not only misguided but also undermines the very essence of what DE&I stands for. Equity is a fundamental pillar in creating a fair and just workplace. By removing it, SHRM sends a message that the structural inequalities and systemic barriers many individuals face are not worth addressing. This is unacceptable. Inclusion and diversity are important, but they are incomplete without equity. Equity ensures that everyone has access to the same opportunities and is treated fairly, taking into account individuals' different needs and circumstances. It is about leveling the playing field and addressing the root causes of inequality. In the complete opposite direction of SHRM's course of action, I strongly advocate for expanding the framework to include “Accessibility.” Ensuring accessibility is crucial to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate and thrive in the workplace. By including Accessibility, we can demonstrate a commitment to supporting all employees and recognizing their inherent value. I urge SHRM to reconsider this decision and reinstate “Equity” in the DE&I framework. Failing to do so would be a significant step backward in our collective efforts to create truly inclusive and fair workplaces. If I do not see a change in direction, I am prepared to cancel my SHRM Membership, which would break my heart. Staying a SHRM member after this action is a vote of support, and this would require me to compromise my moral and ethical standards. Thank you for listening to my deepest concerns. My sentiments are aligned with those of many DEI practitioners, you can't authentically practice DEI without Equity. Equity is the meat of DEI. Equity is the accountability piece, it's what makes change tangible, measurable, and visible. Therefore, eliminating the E in DEI would be an injustice to the work and those who are most impacted by it. The practice of DEI looks different in every organization, and it is up to the organization and its leaders to decide how that is defined Consider those in your organization that are eager to learn and put DEI and leadership practices in to action.
