With another busy tax season in the books, I tend to reflect on areas in which I excelled and focus on where I can improve. Receiving constructive criticism is never easy and can be hard to hear at times. I often remind myself no person or professional is perfect and always has room to grow. At Plante Moran, our interns get a chance to present on their experience with the firm. One particular winter intern, Mackenzie Anderson, had a big impact on me. When prompted with the question, "What advice would you give future interns?", she answered with confidence and poise. "Critical feedback is not criticism. Critical feedback shows the path to growth. Critical feedback paves the way to becoming a better person than you were yesterday. To dwell on it or learn from it, the choice will always be yours." Additionally, Mackenzie said when it comes to receiving critical feedback, replacing the word "criticism" with "growth" trains your mind to associate feedback with positivity. She reminded me that wisdom and advice can come from anyone. As the poet Rumi once said, "Yesterday I was clever so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise so I am changing myself."

Slide 24 resonated w me. It is critical that tax departments collaborate with all functions throughout the organization (not just finance). Without a deep understanding of the core business and properly utilizing that understanding to enhance the tax function, there is a missed opportunity for the tax dept to add more meaningful value throughout the company. #TaxProfessionals #BDOTaxStrategist

A young accounting professional reached out to me here on LinkedIn. She told me that she was having trouble breaking the $50K salary level. She was applying for jobs and getting similiar opportunities to the job she was ALREADY IN. Of course, the first thing I did was say 'Send me the resume you are using.' As I suspected, she was listing out her job duties. Things like doing AP/AR, balancing the ledger, bank reconciliations, etc. I told her, "You look like a $50K" a year accountant. Not what she wanted to hear. I asked her, "What did you do to make this business better?" How did you improve their accounting practices? Was anything NOT working when you arrived here? She launched into a littany of issues they had. Everything from missing payments... To lack of collections efforts... To payroll errors.... To overdrawn checking accounts because customer checks were left sitting on the desk. The list went on and on and on. And little by little, she had fixed every single one of them. I told her that THOSE are the things she should be talking about on her resume, and that's exactly what we did. If someone is hiring an accountant, they already know what an accountant does. They need to know why YOU do it better. I've said it before, and I will say it again (sigh). Please don't be humble on your resume. Please know your own value. Please be able to articulate your successes. She went on to land an offer at $68K. Life changing? Maybe. Maybe not. But it is a step in the right direction. If you're finding it tough to break through salary barriers or land your dream job......don't keep doing the same things over and over.
