“Inspirational mentor & passionate educator is the phrase that comes to mind when I think about Mikki. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her for several years, during which we collaborated on several projects. Above all, I was impressed with Mikki’s ability to educate and inspire action across all age groups and experience levels. And, of course, her flawless public speaking and ability to smile and deliver results while under pressure is impressive. Mikki would be a true asset for any position requiring an approachable professional and creative problem solver. She has my heartfelt recommendation.”

Two Skyline High seniors are fine-tuning an underwater shark measuring device that will be used later this month in research.
Alejandro Coronado and Marco Guerrero, who are part of St. Vrain Valley's aquatics robotics team at the school district's Innovation Center, created the device for Boulder-based Ocean First Institute executive director Mikki McComb-Kobza.
"It's just cool that high schoolers are building this," Coronado said. "It's really fun to play with all these toys."
The aquatics robotics team was initially created through a partnership with the Denver Zoo, with students modifying an underwater robot that's being used in the zoo's work on surveys of a frog found only in Peru's Lake Titicaca.

For their latest project, the shark measuring device is headed to the Pacific Ocean later this month with McComb-Kobza, who is diving with great white sharks as part of a research project.

Sea Turtle Program: July 2013-July 2016
Partners: Teens4Oceans, Ocean Classrooms, View Into The Blue™
Overview: Threats to the local populations of endangered sea turtles are increasing as tourism development grows in the Riviera Maya. The marine and coastal environments that characterize Akumal represent a favorable habitat for sea turtle populations, including the loggerhead (Caretta caretta), the green (Chelonia mydas) and the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate). They use the beaches, seagrasses, and reef habitats as nesting sites, for feeding, breeding and maturation. Akumal gets its name from these phenomena – “The Place of Turtles” in the Mayan language.
Sustainable use of the natural resources is one of the main challenges in Akumal. CEA is working to increase environmental awareness in the community, and feels is it is vital to convey the importance of habitat and species protection to the public and interested parties in Akumal. Teens4Oceans and their partners are collaborating with CEA to assist in research, education, and conservation of the coastal marine ecosystems and the species that inhabit them, especially the sea turtles. - Teens4Oceans website
