How I overestimated a luxury hail damaged vehicle by over $2000 by making one small mistake. I was deployed to St. Louis Missouri working a catastrophic drive in for a paintless dent repair company. We were handling 3 different insurance carrier claims. I was newer to catastrophic hail, this was my third hail storm, but I'd been writing auto damage appraisals for 5 years. I was confident in seeing and counting the hail dents on the panels. This particular vehicle had a lot of chrome moldings on it and due to the way the hail had fallen all of those moldings were damaged. I was shocked as I wrote my estimate that the moldings were over $250 each. Between all the moldings it was over $2000 in moldings. Along with the hail damaged metal panels the estimate was a little over $4000, half of it moldings. I explained the estimate to the owner and walked over to one of the veteran adjusters on the catastrophic line. "Wow those moldings are expensive and every single one of them was damaged." He quickly got up from his seat and walked down the vehicle as the owner pulled away. He sat down next to me and smiled a cheesy, knowing smile and said, "Those went hail damaged moldings. Those were were the clips of the molding snapped into the door." I about threw up. I had overpaid the insured by over $2000. Everything worked out, I didn't get fired and all was fine, but I learned a valuable lesson about hail damage. If something seems weird, inconsistent, it's OK to ask someone for a second opinion. That's why our Certified Auto Writers have our IA Path Estimating Training & Support Room that they can come back to and ask questions. No one knows everything, it isn't wrong to ask for help.

Lead Gen "Tip of the Day" from a former "recovering" Risk Architect...I HATED asking my clients for referrals until I learned this...👇 When I transformed my mindset from a Insurance Producer into a "Risk Architect", I had to get more creative about generating new business. I learned the best source of new business was my current relationships. Of course, right? Duh... "Ask and ye shall receive" (they say) Well, I don't know about you, but I had the hardest time asking clients for referrals. I thought about it all the time, but always chickened out when the opportunity presented itself. I felt "desperate" and fearful of asking. You're in luck today, because I solved that problem with one simple "referral generating" strategy and I'll share the top one with you in today's post... 🔥Here's a quick Lead Generation tip from a former “recovering” Risk Architect 👇 Let’s say your niche is General Contractors (GC's)… 1. Make a list of all your current contractor clients 2. Print off all the certs (COI’s) of all their subcontractors 3. Do deep dive into each cert (intel) 4. Research each one 5. Decide which ones you want to go after 6. Go back to your client and say something like the following... “Hey, I happen to notice you guys work with XYZ as one of your subs. I’ve been wanting to talk to those guys for a while now. Who should I be talking to over there to start building a relationship? Any objections to you giving me an intro or me dropping your name to get my foot in the door there?” 7. Wait for a response (don’t say another word until you're client speaks first, don’t sound desperate, be confident) Execute this wisely. If you’ve done a great job for your GC clients, they’ll refer you to their subs. In fact, they will WANT you doing business with their subs to help better protect THEM, too (it's called "Risk Transfer Strategies" → more about this in a future post). Got it? Tom's Tuesday Tip: Review and Refresh Your Home Insurance Policy. My daughter lives outside of Chicago and called with a sewer back-up question. I said before you call the plumber, make sure you have underground utility coverage (also called Service Line Coverage), which when she called her insurance agent, she had. it. Thankfully, she didn't need that $10,000 rider for her claim, as it wasn't her underground line. * Update Your Coverage: Ensure that your policy reflects any recent home improvements or purchases. Whether you've added a new deck, remodeled your kitchen, or bought new electronics, your coverage limits may need adjusting. * Evaluate Liability Protection: Make sure you have adequate liability coverage. This protects you in case someone gets injured on your property and decides to sue. * Check for Discounts: Look for new discounts that you may be eligible for, such as bundling your home and auto insurance, installing a security system, or having a claims-free record.
