Shhh....let it go. Let it go. 😅 What worked then may not work now. Users change. *People* change. Being a solid PMM includes knowing when and where to pivot. Whether it's being a little more flexible with how you define your primary target audience (S/O to Stanley 1913), or maybe shifting your product's positioning--it's worth a try. Keeping your KPIs front and center, look at which parts of your marketing strategy would benefit the most from a makeover. The results may surprise (and humble) you.

I appreciate how Alice Maggiore emphasized that PR, advertising, and marketing* are all different fields although there is overlap (and that’s usually because of a lack of resources). As the region grows, our communicators need the resources, either in-house or through agency support to manage internal growth effectively! * Not to mention design, video production, social media management, web development, event planning, etc that all falls into the “communications” bucket!

I've been very inspired by Erica Schneider's committment to "building in public" and I'm going to copy her! I'm in the early stages of creating a newsletter (and who knows what else to follow) for journalists, content creators and people who work on the brand side of owned media and B2C branded content. ✨📰✨ I see a LOT of excellent content, resources and tips for creators in B2B SaaS marketing. I don't see nearly enough for B2C content marketing and owned media. So I'm going to create a space to share expertise and insights in this niche. If that's your jam, I hope you'll follow along! Also follow along if you're curious about building in public (again, do yourself a favor and follow Erica b/c she's excellent at it) and like to give your opinion on the internet, because I'll be asking a ton of questions and hope to learn a lot as I go. ➡️ First question: how do YOU define "branded content"?

I really enjoyed Collette Masso del Llano's talk at #BrightonSEO recently. Collette spoke about: "Addressing the Gaps Between SEO and CX." What I liked about this session was that Collette (who says she's not an out-and-out SEO specialist) spoke about how it’s easy to sometimes fixate too much on the wrong SEO targets. This can cause marketers to lose sight of their broader marketing goals. Some key takeaways from the talk: It seems there’s quite a big gap between customer experience and SEO in a lot of businesses. It’s important for marketers to remember to focus more across the whole of the customer journey. Lots of marketers are missing huge opportunities by just looking at that top-of-funnel search intent, where you find high volumes of visitors who are only in the early "awareness" stage of their customer journey with your brand. Colette advised you to try to put more effort into engaging your audience across all stages of their customer journey, guiding them further along that journey. A key quote I wanted to share was: “Vanity metrics are driving SEO strategy.” Collette suggested thinking beyond the constraints of a traditional marketing funnel, and seeing it as more of a cycle. I really like that idea. Your audience is always going round in cycles, of course, so you need to be continually engaging with them. A few more highlights: “Retention strategy needs to be built into an SEO strategy. Only 44% calculate their customer retention rate, according to Semrush.” Collette also mentioned that the death of cookies is going to make the CRM the all-powerful beating heart of an organisation’s marketing. This sounded fascinating. When you survey donors, you'll often find two notable trends: 1. Donors think they give more to you than their actual giving history. 2. Lapsed donors believe they've given to your organization more recently than they have. It's not the donor's fault. We don't often measure time correctly when we're asked for an estimation. A lapsed donor may not know she's lapsed. When you're communicating with her, remind her of how thankful the people she serves is for her donation. Reach out with non-ask engagement to continue to strengthen your relationship.

A couple key tips for writing an appeal: - Make it compelling. Why should the donor demonstrate their passion for the cause through your organization? - Stop showing the need through the lens of your organization and instead through the lens of the donor. - Kill your jargon and internal speak. Donors don’t understand it. Don’t assume they read every piece you send them. You try to educate, it doesn’t mean they’ve learned. Don’t make assumptions. - Pay attention to spelling and grammar. Mistakes will turn donors away from giving. What tips do you have?
