Growing mandate for safe, reliable, clean, affordable nuclear energy … “X-Energy Reactor Company, LLC (“X-energy”), a leading developer of advanced small modular nuclear reactors and fuel technology for clean energy generation, and the U.S. Department of Defense (“DoD” and “the department”) announced today an agreement to an expanded contract under the department’s Project Pele initiative to develop a transportable, cost-effective advanced nuclear microreactor prototype for use in remote military locations. 📢 Opportunity alert: RFI: Additive Manufacturing of Heavy Metal Components in a Classified Environment The Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) in support of the Conventional Prompt Strike Program (CPS) Office is seeking information from interested industry organizations with the capability to additively manufacture (AM) heavy metal components in a classified environment. This is a Request For Information only. The U.S. Navy’s SSP, CPS Program is developing a conventional intermediate-range hypersonic weapon system. CPS is interested in investigating the use of heavy metal additively manufactured components. Planned Production and/or Services: This RFI is looking for a white paper from potential industry partners with the capability or near-capability to print AM components at the Secret Level. Potential future follow on work may include the development of an AM process to produce prototype test articles for evaluation by CPS. Delivery Period: Delivery of white paper is due by 8/31/24. EdgeTech Marine has learned that its industry leading side scan sonar technology was used to help find an aircraft that has been missing for over fifty years. 🌊 The company is a leader in high resolution sonar imaging systems and underwater technology. 🛜 EdgeTech’s 4125i Side Scan Sonar System was designed with both the Search & Recovery (SAR) and shallow water survey communities in mind. The 4125i utilizes EdgeTech’s Full Spectrum® CHIRP technology, which provides two dual simultaneous frequency sets ideal for maximizing range and resolution during searches. In 1971 a plane departed from Burlington International Airport bound for Providence RI but crashed enroute, presumably in Lake Champlain. Searches were carried out at the time of the crash, but weather made the operations difficult. In subsequent years many other searches were completed to no avail.  ⚓️ In May of this year, Garry Kozak utilizing pieces of information from prior surveys, along with Hans Hug, Tim McDonald and Bruce Stebbins, did a search for the missing Rockwell Jet Commander utilizing a high resolution EdgeTech 4125i Side Scan Sonar.  The Rockwell Jet Commander was successfully located and imaged with outstanding, almost photographic, resolution. 🔗 Find out more >> https://hubs.la/Q02zP5NJ0 A more detailed narrative surrounding the events of this fateful 1971 plane crash and the ensuing years of search will be printed in the coming months. 👏 Visit the Ocean Science & Technology website for further information. #ocean #subsea #sonar #technology #sensors

With advanced nuclear fuel designs on the way – that could use novel fuels for reactors -- we are hard at work preparing our technical staff to be #AdvancedReactorReady. Staff members recently trained at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on our light-water reactor core physics codes and neutronics safety analysis methodology. Or to put it simply, our staff looked at computational tools that evaluate how the chain reaction in a reactor core responds under various conditions. Output generated from these codes plays an important role in ensuring nuclear reactor safety by supporting our technical reviews and confirmatory analyses. In this case, the codes show us how advanced fuel designs behave under different conditions.

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) researchers have developed a hybrid multi-physics software package called HOSS - the Hybrid Optimization Software Suite. Integrating computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with state-of-the-art combined finite-discrete element methodologies (FDEM) - consisting of finite element analysis (FEA) and discrete element methods (DEM) - into a single simulation platform, HOSS is capable of solving complex problems for a myriad of engineering disciplines, industrial applications, and scientific research. Whether on a personal desktop or high-performance computing clusters, HOSS’ parallelization allows it to efficiently handle millions of interacting and fracturing solids and/or particle systems. Today in Autonomy: South Korea's USV Hits a Bullseye at RIMPAC 2024 The South Korean Poniard (K-LOGIR) guided rocket was successfully test-fired from a USV during RIMPAC 2024. All six rockets hit their targets, marking 100% accuracy. This marks the first instance of South Korea and the U.S. using unmanned concepts throughout an entire operation, including communication between unmanned systems and target detection. If these development delays keep up, we’ll see RVS 2.0 right around the time the bridge tanker rolls out—which on a normal development timeline would otherwise be enabling RVS 4.0 and autonomous refueling. Comparable to RVS 1.0, it will be incredible when it gets here—every boom operator I know who has seen it in action has been amazed—but one wonders if the so-called “quantum leap” will still be cutting edge if the technology agreement made in 2020 does not actually start rolling out until 2026 or later. The one positive from this article was Assistant Secretary Hunter’s reference to flying on a KC-46 recently.
