Today is launch day for an important new book on dialogue and collaboration by former Monitor colleague Jeff Wetzler, Ask: Tap Into the Hidden Wisdom of People Around You for Unexpected Breakthroughs in Leadership and Life. Jeff has taken the important, classic work on productive interaction from Chris Argyris, David Kanton, Diana Smith, Jamie Higgins, Jim Cutler and others and updated it based on many years' experiences leading change in diverse settings, mainly related to education in underserved populations. I've read it and learned a great deal from it -- highly recommend!

This week, two colleagues asked me to share a favorite group activity to use when facilitating. ➕One is delivering a communications workshop. They were looking for a way to make the workshop more interactive and engaging while pointing out the inherent challenges in good communication. ➕One is compiling a facilitators’ manual for a specific project type. They needed creative brainstorming activities that would work across a variety of settings. Each had their own favorites, of course. But they were looking for some new ideas. Indeed, as facilitators we at Essentiam have a core set of tried-and-true, fit-for-purpose activities we draw from for the work we do most often. Yet we also often need to find something new to fit a certain situation. The internet is full of group activity ideas - do a quick internet search and you’ll find hundreds, or even thousands, of options. Why then did these professionals reach out?  Because finding just the right activity takes some serious consideration. Here are a few things we think about when narrowing down the choices: ❓What is the purpose of the activity?  (encourage people to participate, create psychological safety, make interpersonal connections between people in the group, point out the flaws in a certain way of thinking/acting, assess the group dynamic for better facilitation, brainstorm, decide…) ❓What is the tone we want to set? (fun, thoughtful, creative, caring…) ❓What is the setting? (in-person or virtual, board room, classroom, rounds, breakout room, ballroom, amphitheater, Zoom, Teams…) ❓Who is likely to be in the room?  (academics, CEOs, designers, teenagers, a diverse group of community members…) ❓How many people will be involved? (5, 15, 25, 50, 100, 200, 2,000)  ❓How much time do we have? (5 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, two) Next time you are the one leading a group and evaluating the plethora of activity options, ask yourself these questions and choose accordingly.
