It's grad SZN ! How exciting. As I see the new grad posts on various forms of social media I just can't help feel excited for the next generation of graduates in all forms, high school, college, trade school, certificate programs. In my almost decade since graduating college this is what I have found to be a theme . What you major in does not define you. I majored in Liberal Arts (Yes that is what my diploma states I had the intention of applying to health care graduate programs for a masters. Wow , so funny I am working in healthcare now.. in a different capacity. I have changed careers four times. Fundraising (never ever saw myself in non profit post college) Employment Program Management (non profit PM/Career coach ) Mortgage Lending (my pandemic bridge job) Recruiting ( the job that took forever to land in because no one saw my skills as transferable) It took me years, networking, and lot's of pivots to do so. But something that is true in all of my roles is that I learned something new in each of them that brought me to my next role. So my advice to new grads...Try new things! Try jobs you never saw yourself in. Try jobs that you find "too easy" or "too hard" LEARN EVERYTHING and apply it in your next opportunities. Path's are not always linear. You create as you go. May all new grads find their way and get lost along the way. You develop your map as the journey changes. #classof2024

*The Rejection Reboot* I'm about to spill some real talk, LinkedIn fam! As a recent grad, I thought I had it all figured out. I mean, I had the degree, the skills, and the whole "I'm a boss" attitude. But, let me tell you, the job market had other plans. " rejection", I felt like I was stuck in a never-ending loop of "no's" and "not a good fit's." That's when I realized, I needed to have a Come-to-Jesus moment with myself. I started talking to, well, myself (don't worry, I wasn't entirely losing it). I mean, we're talking full-blown, no-holds-barred, introspective self-talk. I'd ask myself, "What's the real deal, Hanna? What's going on here?" When you're faced with rejection, it's easy to spiral into a vortex of negativity. "I'm not good enough." "I'm a failure." "I'll never find a job." But what if you flipped the script? What if you told yourself, "Rejection is not a reflection of my worth. It's just a detour on the road to success." Think of it like this: every "no" gets you closer to the "yes" you're looking for. It's like playing a game of Job Hunt Jenga - you gotta remove the wrong pieces to find the right fit. And let's not forget the ultimate benefit of self-talk: improved decision-making. When you're able to talk yourself through the ups and downs, you start to develop a radar for what's really important to you. You begin to ask yourself, "What do I really want from this job? Is it the money, the title, or the sense of fulfillment?" Here's the twist: I started to see rejection as a blessing in disguise. It was like that one friend who always tells you the harsh truth, but ultimately wants the best for you. Rejection forced me to re-evaluate my choices, to refine my application strategy, and to focus on what really mattered. Now, I'm not saying it was easy. I had to develop a "rejection response" system. It went a little like this: Rejection letter comes in → Initial freak out → Self-talk intervention → Reality check → "What can I learn from this?" → "What's the next move?" The benefits of self-talk during job rejection? 1. *Reality check*: It helps you separate the emotions from the facts. You're not defined by a single rejection letter. 2. *Improved decision-making*: By acknowledging your thoughts, you can make more informed choices about your next steps. 3. *Resilience building*: You'll develop a thicker skin and learn to bounce back from setbacks. 4. *Growth mindset*: Self-talk encourages you to focus on what you can learn from the experience, rather than dwelling on the negative. So, the next time you're faced with a rejection letter, remember: it's not the end of the world. It's just a plot twist. If you’re a CS student, the highest leverage activity you can pursue is Getting a Big Tech internship. Yes. This is a pretty safe advice I can give. Why: 1. It's relatively easy. Barriers to entry for internship big tech positions are much lower than for full-time positions: easier to get an interview, easier to pass the interview. 2. Getting a junior full-time role in big tech is very hard without an internship in big tech. The company would need to make a substantial bet on you, without knowing if you can perform at big tech levels. While also being junior (so in general needing more guidance). 3. Spending the first few years of your career in low-paying tech jobs can hurt your career. I mean, noone is gonna die if you do so, but the further you part ways from top careers, technically the harder it is to rejoin them. Ageism is a bit real in big tech IMO. 4. A big tech internship is a very liquid commodity. Even if you don't want to do big tech long-term, having some good brands on your CV will pay dividends when looking for all kinds of roles in tech: startups, contract jobs, remote gigs, business opportunities, etc. 5. As a student, you have a lot more time to prepare for interviews. If you're in uni, you can buy yourself time more easily than when having a 9-5. Moreover, you can somewhat freely tune how much effort you want put into your uni commitments (for example, you might be ok with taking average grades if this allows you to have more time to prep and interview). 6. As a student, you're more likely to be dealing with theoretical CS on a daily basis. Things like algorithms and data structures classes, theoretical distributed systems classes and so on. All things that for some reasons nowadays are key to big tech interview processes. 7. Corollary of above: the more you're in the industry, the less you remember theoretical CS. And the more time you'd need to spend LeetCoding on the weekend to stay sharp for interviews (which will also be harder interviews because you'd be interviewing for full-time and potentially senior roles). 8. Big tech internships are a cheat code for networking. You usually are surrounded by many other students in your position, and you can easily mingle with them as peers and create genuine connections. Most of them, will end up doing pretty well in their careers, and this can positively contribute to your network. Also it's a good way to make like-minded friends. Agree?

If you want to 10x your job search success as an international student, you need to tell better stories. Think about Steve Jobs: He wasn't just a tech visionary - he was a master storyteller! Your stories matter in your job search more than you think. If you turn the interview into a conversation with stories that captivate, inspire, and persuade, you will increase your chances of landing the job! Imagine they ask you about a time you solved a problem. You can show the journey, the struggle, and the triumph, and say something like this: “Let me share a story of how I solved a problem at work: Our project was on the brink of failure due to a critical software bug that no one could figure out. As the project lead, I gathered the team, and we brainstormed day and night, checking every possible cause. Finally, after hours of debugging, I discovered that the issue was a rare, undocumented behaviour in the code. We quickly implemented a workaround and successfully delivered the project on time. A Letter to Anyone Hiring from a Newbie: I get it, on paper, I might not have experience to back up my recent grad knowledge, and never having a full-time job definitely doesn’t help (shoutout to those generic rejection emails, right?). However, my curiosity and perseverance have led me to meet all kinds of people who've taught me way more than I could fit on a resume. At Full Sail University, things move fast, and there's a whole bunch of programs to dive into (I was in a 20-month program myself). From day one on campus in Florida, I was soaking up knowledge from anyone willing to talk or give feedback. Whether it was hanging out at the Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting (big thanks to Ciara Evans for giving me the guts to hangout in the live studio) or diving into Audio Arts, there was always someone willing to share wisdom that went beyond just my degree. Heck, one of the first things I learned was all about the RGB color spectrum and how it plays into lighting and then how it shows through a camera lens. And let me tell you, I practically lived on campus—I was always around, soaking up whatever I could. But you can't really sum up that kind of experience on a resume, especially without official work. Besides staying connected with different programs, I also jumped on any 'field trip' opportunities that came up. Like, hanging with Lour Design to learn about screen printing and even getting to print our own designs, or checking out places like The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art for a Tiffany Glass exhibit. But since it was all unofficial, it doesn't really make the cut on a resume. Those are just a few highlights from my time at Full Sail. There's a lot more now that I've moved home, like doing design tests for job opportunities where I had to do deep dives into clothing production processes to turn in the best product, or hitting up my sibling (with that fancy master's in chemistry) to wrap my head around how pigments work in different solvents for things like dry offset printing on cans (for my little side project, SoDuh). So please, before you brush off a resume filtered by keywords, just know there's a whole world of experiences us new grads bring to the table beyond what's written down. 2024 is proving to be a year of exploration in my job search! I've been fortunate to interview with several top-tier companies for product management roles. Every time I get a call-back, I try to become a mini expert on each company's industry. I turn into a grad student, immersing myself in everything I can learn - the industry, their technologies, competitors, and the company itself. It's like a crash course every few weeks, but incredibly rewarding. Here's a glimpse into the diverse industries I've explored in just the last three months: -             Insurance -             Travel -             Logistics -             HVAC -             Energy -             IT Consulting -             Electric Vehicles (PHEV/BEV/Hybrid trucks) -             Semiconductors -             E-commerce So, what exactly does "deep dive" mean? Here are the key questions I answer to get a solid understanding: What sparked the company's creation? What are their core values? What customer problems do they solve, and what are their future goals? How do they generate revenue? How does their tech stack compare to competitors? What are their strengths and weaknesses? Customer reviews are key! What are people saying about their products? How mature is their data infrastructure? The research is never truly "finished," but the key is finding a balance. I constantly assess how my skills and experience align with each company and how I can make a real impact. While I haven't landed the perfect role yet, I'm confident it's just around the corner. Re-entering the interview circuit after eight years takes some practice, but I'm sharpening my skills with every conversation. 🙋‍♀️ Hello Everyone, Hope everyone’s Tuesday is going great! 👩‍🎨 Yesterday, I shared two tips that helped me in my job search journey. Today, I’d like to share a few more insights that might be helpful. 📑 First, I want to emphasize that bulk applying for jobs every day may seem like the right approach, but it didn’t work out for me. I began my job hunt in September 2023 during my last semester of my master's degree. I wasn't able to secure an internship during the summer of 2023 and initially used the same strategy for job applications that I did for internships. I noticed a pattern where using “easy apply” options wasn’t yielding results. 📝 After speaking with peers who had secured jobs, one common piece of advice stood out: tailored resumes. Instead of focusing on the quantity of applications, I shifted my focus to quality. You might be thinking, “Well, that’s obvious,” but the key for me was broadening my scope of job titles. Initially, I only applied for data analyst or business intelligence analyst roles. 📌 However, I researched and discovered other types of analyst roles that required similar skill sets, such as Operations Analyst, Media Analyst, Risk Analyst, and Business Pricing Analyst. Of course, it’s essential to check the job descriptions to ensure a good fit. I never tried to match my skill set 100% with the job description—if I saw a 50% or 60% match, I'd still apply. Expanding my job search criteria made a significant difference. These are some strategies that worked for me. I am excited to share that I was selected to participate in Huron's Professional Development Bootcamp, thanks to CareerSpring for presenting this opportunity to me. This opportunity has been incredibly enriching and valuable for my career development. Over the course of four virtual bootcamps (Personal Branding, Resumes 101, Interviewing 101, and Leadership Styles) from June 21 to July 19, I gained numerous insights and skills. Here are my key takeaways: 1. Personal Branding: A significant part of developing a personal brand is defining who you are or what are you known for. What unique qualities and skills make your life and the lives of others better? 2. Resume Building: Use a simple, clear structure for your resume. Avoid sections with just one bullet point, and tailor your resume to each position by incorporating keywords from the job description. 3. Interviewing Tips: It's perfectly acceptable to ask your recruiter what to expect in the interview if you are not sure. Silence during an interview is OKAY; take a moment to pause, breathe, and think through your answers before responding. 4. Case Interviews: Adopt a forward-thinking perspective for case interview questions. This demonstrates not only your problem-solving skills but also your ability to envision improvements for the future. 5. Leadership Styles: If you're in college or preparing for your career, consider exploring the color theory exercise to understand your leadership style and how you collaborate with others. This was my first exposure to this exercise, and it was incredibly helpful in understanding my working style. In addition to the bootcamp, Huron offers mentoring opportunities, as well as potential internship and job placements for participants at Huron. As a rising junior in college, this experience provided critical insights into the consulting industry and has significantly shaped my career aspirations. For anyone interested in consulting, I highly recommend Huron’s Professional Development Bootcamp. After I posted about my Product job database last week, I had many students and recent grads reach out and ask why there weren't more entry-level positions. The reality is most top tech companies don't have many entry-level Product Manager positions to fill. In fact, the database shows that fewer than 8% of PM open positions are entry level (0-2 years of relevant experience required). However, one of the best ways to get into Product is by doing an Associate Product Manager (APM) program out of school. Peak hiring season for 2025 cohorts begins at the end of Summer. Capital One's program (what I did) will alone be hiring 100+ associate/intern PMs. To help you all prepare, I’m organizing a multi-company APM info session for students in late July.
