A new report produced by the Center for New York City Affairs in partnership with the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at The New School and the Center for Community Uplift The Brookings Institution reveals racial and economic inequities in New York City’s public transportation subsidies. Examining subsidies across the city’s ten transit systems by race and income, the report finds inequities between subsidies for the NYC Ferry service compared with the Fair Fares program for the MTC’s subway and bus riders, and underscores the importance of assessing policies and budgets through a #racialequity lens. Medicaid coverage can be life changing, but only if enrollees understand their coverage and are empowered to seek care. Unfortunately, disjointed outreach and awareness building sometimes means many who are covered don’t even realize it. Researchers found that about 1 in 3 people enrolled in Medicaid in 2022 didn’t know that they were covered, an ongoing problem that worsened during the unwinding. This issue highlights the importance of thorough outreach to Medicaid enrollees, and why policymakers must do all they can to reach those who are eligible. If policymakers did away with burdensome and ineffective work requirements, precious staff time and resources could be better spent on essential tasks like notifying people of their coverage status at the right address, or writing clear communications materials in many languages. https://lnkd.in/ewCwWbNc

The more time I spend reading, writing, and thinking about the impact of replacing in-person community with online community, the more I recognize some of what makes me unusual as a conservative. I place little value on loyalty (except in marriage) and authority. I also value sanctity less than most religious conservatives do. However, I still believe sanctity is incredibly important, just not the sanctity of authority or loyalty. Instead, I place a high sanctity value on Truth and pursuing it. That naturally lends itself to valuing structure and certain kinds of rules. I despise arbritrary rules. I love process rules or guidelines (structure!) that improve and/or expedite reaching well-reasoned/true/correct/best outcomes. I love structure in my life. It keeps me on track, in good shape, and efficient. Without structure, even self-imposed, I tend to be less efficient and less committed to in-person community (even though I’m a massive extrovert). I tend to self-impose high amounts of structure in my life so that I work smarter and harder and stay committed to social engagements (which keeps my mood high and friendships close). This article does a great job of explaining why religious community and structure in particular is a net good for virtually everyone.

Media coverage of campus clashes misses a critical backstory ... the tireless efforts of organizations like BridgeUSA, Braver Angels, Constructive Dialogue Institute, Interfaith America , Institute for Citizens & Scholars and others to create space for civil dialogue and civic learning on America's college campuses. Thank you to these orgs, and their funders, for helping administrators, faculty, and students to navigate difficult times. Manu's editorial in Philanthropy Today is behind a paywall, so I'll quote him here: "Once we at BridgeUSA looked past the temperamental extremists, we found that, honestly, most students — what I would call the 'temperamental moderates' — are ideologically diverse, want to freely debate the difficult issues of our time, and disagree productively. "Time and time again, young people have demonstrated a unique capacity to influence culture through activism. My experience has shown me that students can turn pluralism and dialogue into exciting and revolutionary ideas that have the same cultural resonance as issue-based activism. "If we want to prevent the next firestorm on campus and strengthen higher education, it’s time to support student-led bridging efforts across the country. If we don’t do it for campus culture, let’s do it for the sake of our democracy, which rests on the notion that we thrive because of our differences." As we observe the evolving landscape of kinship care in the United States, I am proud to share how the Maryland Department of Human Services is at the forefront of this crucial reform. Recent changes across various states, including Michigan's pioneering new licensing requirements for kin caregivers, reflect a national shift towards removing barriers that previously prevented family members from providing care. This follows a welcome federal rule change by the Biden administration. In Maryland, we've been proactive in adapting our policies to better support kinship care. We have successfully scaled back certain training and background check requirements, recognizing that while safety and preparedness are paramount, flexibility is essential. These changes help ensure that children can stay within their families without unnecessary delays or hindrances, which is often in their best interest. Our approach considers the complexities of each family situation, aiming to balance rigorous safety standards with the profound need for children to remain with family whenever possible. This is just one of the reasons why I love working at the Maryland Department of Human Services—our commitment to meaningful reform and our dedication to the well-being of every child and family we serve. Calling are New Yorkers with a heart for refugees! The amazing people at Hearts & Homes for Refugees are helping New Yorkers to onboard with an exciting new State Department-led program known as the Welcome Corps. Welcome Corps allows U.S. citizens to support refugees who have been approved for resettlement through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). The U.S. currently faces a massive backlog of refugees, particularly from Afghanistan. The need is also urgent. A potential change of administration in 2025 will likely affect the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program; in Fiscal Year 2018, U.S. refugee admissions reached a historic low since the resettlement program first launched in 1980. It's time to act, now. Here’s how New Yorkers can change a life: 1. Email hello@heartsandhomesforrefugees.org with the subject, “Welcome Corps” to start a conversation with one of our staff about how you can get involved with the welcoming movement. 2. Start organizing a group of five friends, or members of your house of worship, civic group, book club… anyone who lives within a 30-minute radius to join a private sponsor group (PSG)! 3. List your PSG's preferences as part of the Welcome Corps application. Do you want to resettle a single, two people, or a family (and what size)? Is there a specific population you’d like to sponsor and resettle? Do you want to help those who have been waiting the longest? Or do you want to resettle Afghan allies, perhaps facing deportation in Pakistan? 4. Fundraise! But don’t worry! Although Welcome Corps requires each group to raise $2,425 per refugee resettled, several funds can cover more than half of that requirement, and HHR can provide guidance on how to fundraise the remainder. 5. Work with Hearts & Homes for Refugees to fill out your online application.
