KFC Foundation: Kentucky Fried Wishes GRANTS FOR IMPROVING HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Application deadline: May 1 to May 31, 2024 for the upcoming application window (“cycle”), focused on health and well-being. Grant amount: Up to $10,000 Description: Through the Kentucky Fried Wishes program, the KFC Foundation will award up to $1 million total to 100 nonprofit organizations annually in the United States and Puerto Rico. 25 grants will be awarded per quarterly cycle. The next quarterly cycle for 2024 focuses on improving health and well-being, including efforts such as mobile health clinic creation, playground improvements, domestic violence shelter upgrades, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities; Eligible nonprofit organizations must operate on the local level (or be an affiliate or chapter of a larger organization that operates locally) and directly benefit their surrounding community. Puerto Rico-based nonprofits with 501(c)(3) who meet other eligibility requirements can apply. Gobioff Foundation could use some help identifying potential organizations to receive our Juneteenth grants. Each year since 2020, the Gobioff Foundation has chosen 5 organizations to receive unrestricted grants of $20,000 with no obligations or expectation of reporting. As a small family foundation, we are looking to our community to help identify worthy organizations to support as part of this program. To qualify, organizations must be an eligible 501(c)3 as determined by the IRS, have BIPOC leadership, and have a mission to improve Black Lives. Organizations can be located anywhere in the United Sates. They do not have to be art organizations. Art isn’t a category we are looking for. This is NOT a popularity contest. Coordinated efforts by organizations to have multiple people submit will not make a difference. We’re not counting votes. This program is vital for health centers serving low-income and uninsured patients, providing them with affordable medications. 📜The Health Care Workforce Innovation Act (H.R. 7307) and the Bipartisan Primary Care and Health Workforce Act (S. 2840) fund essential workforce programs to address the healthcare worker shortage. By investing in training and supporting healthcare professionals, we can ensure a robust workforce capable of meeting the growing healthcare needs of our communities. 📜The CONNECT for Health Act (H.R. 4189 in the House, S. 2016 in the Senate), the HEALTH Act (H.R. 5611), and the Telehealth Modernization Act (H.R. 7623): These acts aim to make flexible telehealth policies permanent, ensuring that patients continue to have access to remote healthcare services. Telehealth has been a lifeline for many, especially during the pandemic, providing convenient and timely care. Congress must vote yearly to provide discretionary (short-term, annual) funding and reauthorize mandatory long-term funding for Community Health Centers. This funding allows us to provide stability to our essential healthcare homes and: ✅ Care for over 31.5 million patients regardless of insurance status. ✅ Keep patients out of the emergency room by providing efficient preventive, coordinated care. ✅ Support more than 500,000 jobs across the country, offering opportunities to grow careers in healthcare. ✅ These jobs anchor our communities by generating strong economic output of nearly $85 billion. Today the The Associated Press published an excellent article with the headline "Community health centers' new crisis: The need for backup power". The article is well timed, coinciding with the beginning of hurricane and wildfire seasons. Recent powerful storms are a reminder of the devastating effects that extreme weather can have on communities, particularly those that are already vulnerable. Public safety power shutoffs and natural disasters like the Tubbs Fire in Healdsburg, California, that was described in the article, disproportionately impact the health of the elderly, young, disabled, and those with special medical needs. Individuals with low income often face challenges accessing basic healthcare, which is exacerbated during times of emergency. With severe storms and wildfires increasing in frequency and intensity, Direct Relief has been focused on strengthening the resilience of critical community health providers. This allows them to continue caring for vulnerable patients when needed most. Recent storms in Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas left hundreds of thousands without electric power. Without access to power, lifesaving medicines go bad, electronic health records can’t be accessed, essential medical equipment and home health care devices can’t be powered, and vital community health facilities shut down. Direct Relief’s Power for Health initiative, which is mentioned in the article, addresses health equity, the need for renewable energy, and community resilience through provision of clean backup energy systems at community health facilities. The initiative began with the organization's response to the destruction of the power grid in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. These critical investments allow continued access to health services when the grid goes down. Currently, there are 56 Direct Relief-funded clean power projects at health facilities serving 1.6 million low-income patients across California, Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Puerto Rico. By strengthening the resilience of community health providers, Direct Relief aims to strengthen access to quality care for all, and it is something the organization intends to do more of. But beyond our own practices, we believe it's crucial for donors and supporters to know what to look for when donating.    Here are some things to look at when evaluating charitable patient assistance foundations:    - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General Advisory Opinions and modifications    - IRS-issued charitable status determination letter    - IRS Form 990s    - Audited financial statements    - Program audits conducted by an independent review organization    - Compliance program information, including adherence to the seven elements of an effective   compliance program identified by the Office of Inspector General    - Third-party charity evaluations (Charity Navigator, GuideStar, etc.)    - Annual reports    Research always leads to a better outcome, either guiding you toward the right organization or away from the wrong one. Take the time to make sure your donations are going to make a real difference.
