(Chicago). Top 12 takeaways: - The medtech venture market is warming. Might Josh Baltzell’s playing of Vivaldi’s “Spring” concerto at Medtech MVP mark the market’s turn for the positive? - Some are observing “it’s easier today to raise $50mm than $15mm.” For commercial stage companies, this (directionally at least) seems to ring true. There is capital to deploy, but conservatism still abounds. Thanks to Wells Fargo Corporate & Investment Banking for the invitation and superb meetings. - Jennie Xue has the pulse on digital medtech. Her presentation at WSGR conference received many complements. - One of the most fun and productive conf formats is the Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati tradition of having VCs host wine tasting stations at the closing reception. It fostered quick, casual hellos and all were good sports (the aprons were a nice touch as well). - Minneapolis is a Medtech star. Great conference and superb showing by the “home team.” Thank you to all. - Scott Becker has built a stellar healthcare franchise. His newsletters are ubiquitous and conference line-up is broad, but I was most impressed with the community of professionals who shared best practices, new strategies and innovative technologies to adopt w peers. Thank you Michael R Redler, MD for the “exciting companies to watch” shoutout to Pristine Surgical. - Ambulatory surgery centers are the unsung heroes of healthcare. What do they want? Not new fangled gadgets, not more expensive capital equipment. They want ways to serve patients better, more efficiently, at a lower cost. “Enough with the AI, give me EI: Efficiency Intelligence. That’s what we need.” We’re on it, Dr Mihir Patel - Summit beer pairs well with appetizers on the run. Thanks for a great day Christopher Cleary and Stephen J. Snyder, MD - Growing up in Minnesota, I’ve crossed the Mississippi hundreds of times. But it’s not til you witness St Anthony Falls up close that you truly appreciate its power. Multiply that 1,000x as it travels to the Gulf. The backbone of America. - For all the career advice on LinkedIn, the best job in the world is being a dad. To the young-ins, have kids. there’s never a “good” time career-wise, but do it anyway. Thanks for making Father’s day special, ladies. #girldad - Community matters. F2F matters. We all are more efficient with Zoom, but the most powerful experiences remain F2F and the most effective conferences recognize that #community is the difference between a functional vs impactful gathering. LESS than 1 in 5 Americans are getting screened for lung cancer. Screening is so critical for being ahead of the curve with our health. The sooner we screen and discover a health concern, the sooner we can proactively treat it or even prevent it from getting worse (depending on the illness or issue). "Those at high risk include people 50–80 years old who smoke or smoked a pack a day for 20 years. People who quit smoking less than 15 years ago are still considered high-risk. The goal is for those at high risk to be tested every year via a CT scan." "When identified at a local stage, non-small cell lung cancer has a five-year survival rate of over 60%, compared to just 8% when diagnosed at a distant stage." The piece, written by Daniel Turski, MD, MA, delves into the stories of doctors who defy conventional norms to provide exceptional care and make a meaningful difference in their patients' lives. "Thinking in order to do better in a system that rewards doing over thinking is a core, anti-mimetic feature in medicine. And it’s especially difficult for two reasons: The first and obvious is letting old habits die while facing potential rejection from professional colleagues. The second and more subtle one is that doing better can mean doing less. It might mean making less money, acknowledging that we’re not as important as we’d like to be—and that somehow, in some way, our best intentions can make things worse. Those are tough pills to swallow. But maybe those pills are just the medicine that Western society needs right now."

NEW! Average #Salary Data for the U.S. (updated April, 2024) #SIDEBAR: These median salary levels always seem low to me for the medical device industry..... AGREE or NOT? NON COMPETE UPDATE I've been writing recently about the pending elimination of #noncompete agreements and the potential impact on hiring. I'll add one more opinion paper on the topic Tuesday and then re-issue the complete series soon. HIRING NORMS ARE SHIFTING AGAIN To add fuel to the fire that #hiring is heating up in the #MedicalDevice and #Medtech sector, the latest unemployment numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show that unemployment among college educated individuals over the age of 25 was 2.1% as of April 5th. The Great Resignation is largely over but hiring best practices are changing and evolving for both candidates and companies. We envision that medtech is at a near tipping point, suggesting a full return to a candidate-driven market, at least through the end of 2024. Exciting developments in the US this week! “Noncompete clauses keep wages low, suppress new ideas, and rob the American economy of dynamism, including from the more than 8,500 new startups that would be created a year once noncompetes are banned,” said FTC Chair Lina M.
