The Future of Work starts with Life. Nirit Cohen had spent over a quarter of century at Intel working on global roles. Over a decade ago in 2015 Nirit began to focus full time on writing and thinking about the future of work and was kind enough to join me on a conversation about her key insights that every employee, manager and talent team should keep in mind. It is a fascinating conversation where we discuss a lot including the reality that work is no longer plugged into walls or done within walls of an office 1) Work is no longer a place but something you do ( we are no longer connected or chained to walls) 2) Everywhere is the new location of work 3) Everything is becoming work and tasks replace jobs and tasks are modularizing work But that is just the beginning as we discuss why a) The Future of Work starts with life ( if life and work have friction life wins) b) Work from anywhere is the new expectation and it is not about location! (long before Covid managers were managing from out of the office and many companies had most of their employees thousands of miles of their main offices and HQ) c) Climbing the rungs of the ladder of work will be replaced by climbing walls and most of the benefits of tenure except people skills are less relevant as modern technology and AI makes knowledge free and the half life of skills decay d) Skills, fluidity, transformation are the new currency of work and not seniority through tenure, stability and status quo. As a former competitive athlete, this was an interesting read about how the Golden State Warriors used storytelling and data driven decision-making to launch “an era of league domination.” The power of storytelling is unrivaled. It's the way human brains best understand & retain information. And, as this article notes, its essential to establishing relationships. There is also no doubt that data is critical to success, but that success hinges on more than just having lots of information. Data driven decision-making is about how we extract insights from data to inform our strategies and validate our actions, leaving agendas, opinions, and emotions at the door. And, particularly avoiding, the N=1 data fallacy of "I talked to this one customer and they said..." But, it's more than just embracing data; it’s a mindset shift, that starts at the top. Leaders can set great examples and encourage teams to embrace data in decision-making, use it for ongoing refinement of execution, and stay open to new data that might change the game. In the ongoing debate between meritocracy and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) it's essential to recognize that these concepts can coexist, though they may sometimes appear conflicting. Meritocracy emphasizes selecting individuals based on their abilities and achievements, while DEI focuses on ensuring fair opportunities for all, especially for historically marginalized groups. Meritocracy prioritizes hiring and promotion based on talent and performance, leading to high efficiency and innovation. However without DEI, there's a risk of perpetuating systemic inequalities, as not all individuals have equal access to opportunities and resources from the outset. The introduction of Merit, Excellence, and Intelligence (MEI) by organizations like Scale AI seeks to balance these elements. MEI maintains high standards while ensuring fairness and equal opportunity without lowering benchmarks. This approach aims to place the right talent within organizations without focusing solely on race or gender, aligning closely with traditional meritocratic values. DEI initiatives can complement meritocratic principles by broadening the talent pool and fostering diverse perspectives, enhancing problem-solving and innovation. By integrating DEI, organizations can address inherent biases and structural barriers that prevent certain groups from showcasing their true potential, thus ensuring a more genuine meritocracy. While meritocracy and DEI may seem at odds, a nuanced approach incorporating both can lead to a more equitable and effective workplace. As a branding & comms person, I often code switch to a "commercial marketer" so I can hope to gain a perceived (aka better), more strategic seat around the business table. But watching how attribution and GPTs can sanitize brands into oblivion I'm wearing my Storytelling badge with renewed pride. Storytelling is far from a "soft" skill in the business world; it is the essential, and often, missing piece in marketing strategy. "Nibbling at the Edges" with Nokia Brand: Can HMD really compete with Apple and Samsung? Reintroducing Nokia feature phones after 25 years has proven effective for HMD Global. This approach aligns with the trend of digital simplification for adults, appealing particularly in developing countries and among parents concerned with the education of their children before free access to smartphones. HMD Global's strategy has strengthened its market share, especially in regions like the Middle East and Africa. Despite a 3.2% decline in global smartphone shipments in 2023, Nokia managed to grow by focusing on niche markets. However, competing with Apple and Samsung requires more than niche presence. Apple's market share rose to 20.1% in 2023, surpassing Samsung's 19.4%. To truly challenge these leaders, HMD must innovate uniquely and build a strong brand identity among Gen Y and Gen Z, demanding significant marketing investments. HMD's focus on sustainability with its branded smartphones appeals to environmentally conscious consumers. The Future is Already Here, We Just Need to Embrace It I recently had a conversation with Sam Johnson, EY’s Americas Vice Chair, and he made a poignant observation: when it comes to preparing organizations for the future, we tend to approach new world problems with old world tools. It’s a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with, but I also believe that many of the “new world” approaches we need aren’t actually new—we just don’t use them. As a young leader at Pearson once said, “It’s not complicated, it’s just hard.” Take organizational structures, for example. Leaders today crave more fluid, adaptable structures that can thrive in a world of increasing uncertainty and ambiguity. The truth is, we’ve had these structures for decades in the form of chaordic systems, a concept devised by Dee Hock. For those unfamiliar, chaordic systems are a blend of chaos and order, designed to be flexible, self-organizing, and adaptable. They operate on a set of guiding principles rather than rigid hierarchies, allowing for rapid response to change and fostering innovation. Hock originally deployed this model at credit card payment juggernaut VISA with great success. I experienced the incredible power of chaordic systems firsthand during my time at Mozilla. You can even argue that large parts of Amazon are built on these principles. Yet, despite their proven track record, chaordic systems remain largely unadopted in the broader organizational landscape. Why? Because they require us to fundamentally rethink how we operate and make decisions—a daunting prospect for many entrenched organizations. Science fiction author William Gibson famously said, “The future is already here - it’s just not evenly distributed.” That statement perfectly encapsulates the challenge facing businesses today. The solutions we need to thrive in the new world often already exist, but they remain confined to pockets of innovation and experimentation, are used only in overlooked markets, or simply misunderstood. To truly prepare for the future, we need to get better at identifying and scaling these proven approaches. We need to be willing to challenge our long-held assumptions about how organizations should function and embrace new models that prioritize agility, adaptability, and resilience. The good news is, we don’t have to start from scratch. We can learn from the pioneers who have already blazed the trail, like Dee Hock and the chaordic systems he championed. So yes, new world problems absolutely demand new world solutions. But let’s not fall into the trap of assuming that “new” always means “novel.” In many cases, the answers we seek are already out there, waiting to be embraced and scaled. The real challenge lies in overcoming our resistance to change and having the courage to reimagine how we work. It won’t be easy, but the alternative—clinging to outdated models in a rapidly evolving world—is a recipe for obsolescence. The future is here, and it’s time we caught up to it.

It’s true. Facts don’t change minds, questions do. Collaboration does. Relationships do. It’s far more effective to ask questions and seek data that enable them to see the gaps in their own reasoning.
