This top list includes NYT best selling books for ADULTS, which is truly amazing because it reflects the growing importance of mental health resources for children, especially in these challening times. The book's success underscores the value of equipping children with the tools to build resilience and navigate life's uncertainties with confidence, and the value of providing adults with developmentally appropriate language to teach children skills from behavioral science on managing the challenges of life. After carefully picking up topics that matter the most and having it vetted by mental health professionals, I have finally decided to launch the series on guidebook to caring for loved ones with mental disorders. Knowing that I’m not super great with marketing (and vulnerably stating that here! 😝), I went with the idea of putting it for free on YouTube (at least all the episodes from Part 1). Still undecided on the fate of next parts- do I put them for free on YouTube or can families in need afford to pay for them bundled in the form of a self paced course? …I believe the progress of Part 1 episodes might be able to help in that decision over the next few weeks. What is EMDR and how can it help you heal from trauma? As a therapist, I've seen firsthand the impact that trauma can have on our lives, and I'm excited to share my knowledge with you. In this blog post, we'll dive into the world of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and explore what it can do to help you manage your emotions, regulate your nervous system, and develop coping skills to feel safe and grounded in the present moment. So, what is EMDR? Simply put, it's a type of therapy that helps your brain process and rewire traumatic memories. But it's not just about "processing" trauma - it's about learning to manage your emotions, regulate your nervous system, and develop coping skills to help you feel safe and grounded in the present moment. But here's the thing: EMDR isn't a quick fix. It's a comprehensive therapy model that requires patience, trust, and a willingness to do the hard work of healing. It's not just about "fixing" your trauma - it's about building a stronger, more resilient you. And while it may work more quickly for some people than others, it's always worth it in the end. One of my takeaways from the CAMFT Annual Conference is a reminder that an integrative approach to therapy reaches the most people in the most useful ways. This may mean combining Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Narrative Therapy to flesh out cognitive distortions or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) techniques to help clients self-soothe regardless of modality or combining Narrative Therapy with Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help parts tell their stories. There is no one right way to practice therapy, and integrating these modalities can be a useful tool for therapists to better serve their clients. Another benefit to attending conferences is the opportunity to network with people from different backgrounds, demographics, and geographic areas. I call those things we did during and after COVID shelter-in-place (SIP) that we did not do before "sourdough starters." With telehealth becoming a ubiquitous tool for therapists--a sourdough starter--post SIP, clients in rural areas with fewer clinicians or areas where it is unsafe to access services can now access necessary resources. One presenter rightly said, "Know the resources in your area." But it is also important to know the resources in your client's area, and networking is one way to access this knowledge. The first two questions I often ask new connections is "Where do you work?" and "Who do you serve?" Share in the comments where you work and who you serve!

In her review paper from 2022, "How does yoga practice and therapy yield psychological benefits? A review and model of transdiagnostic processes." Alison Bennett argues that ‘yoga practices target transdiagnostic psychological issues'. She expands on how the 8-limbs are a prime way to explain this. So what does transdiagnostic mean in psychology? It means that rather than looking at a particular mental health condition, we look at features that are common amongst many mental health conditions. This might mean that rather than considering that yoga therapy can help with depression, we might say, yoga improves low mood, a cardinal symptom of so many mental health conditions. For us as yoga therapists any transdiagnostic approach allows us to see the whole person and respond individually. If you speak to almost any psychiatrist or psychologist, they will admit that almost all patients have features found in other diagnosis. So why is this so important? It allows psychological therapists to understand how yoga therapy can be supportive in transdiagnostic ways with so many patients. Bennett proposes a model considering how the 8 limbs of yoga can elicit psychological change, with 3 of the limbs outlined below. This is something Heather Mason has also been teaching for many years. -Yama (Restraints): The Yamas could link to stressing the importance of trust, confidentiality, and respect in their therapeutic relationship. -Niyama (Observances): might include suggesting reflection through daily journaling exercises to help develop self-discipline and self-awareness. -Asana (Physical Postures): gentle yoga postures, using body-oriented interventions to promote body awareness, relaxation, and stress reduction.
