How can you use listening to gain leverage in a negotiation?
I often take part in negotiations where one or more of the parties (typically the OEM) are so focused on what they want (typically lower prices) that they are completely closed off to the needs of the other side. This leads to sub-optimal results in my experience. You can usually get a deal done by carrying a big stick and forcing it though (especially if you are a big OEM).Truly listening and understanding the reasons for the positions of the other side is exactly how you need to find common ground to close complex deals. The deals that stand the test of time, improve relationships and deliver maximum value are the Win/Win situations where both sides truly understand each other and get creative to find mutual ground.
