As a former competitive athlete, this was an interesting read about how the Golden State Warriors used storytelling and data driven decision-making to launch “an era of league domination.” The power of storytelling is unrivaled. It's the way human brains best understand & retain information. And, as this article notes, its essential to establishing relationships. There is also no doubt that data is critical to success, but that success hinges on more than just having lots of information. Data driven decision-making is about how we extract insights from data to inform our strategies and validate our actions, leaving agendas, opinions, and emotions at the door. And, particularly avoiding, the N=1 data fallacy of "I talked to this one customer and they said..." But, it's more than just embracing data; it’s a mindset shift, that starts at the top. Leaders can set great examples and encourage teams to embrace data in decision-making, use it for ongoing refinement of execution, and stay open to new data that might change the game. As a branding & comms person, I often code switch to a "commercial marketer" so I can hope to gain a perceived (aka better), more strategic seat around the business table. But watching how attribution and GPTs can sanitize brands into oblivion I'm wearing my Storytelling badge with renewed pride. Storytelling is far from a "soft" skill in the business world; it is the essential, and often, missing piece in marketing strategy. This MIT Sloan School of Management article highlights several key benefits that storytelling delivers such as "sustained winning," solidifying its importance in driving business success: 1️⃣ Enhanced Understanding and Engagement: Storytelling makes complex data more accessible and engaging, helping teams and stakeholders understand and retain information better. This improved comprehension leads to more informed decision-making. 2️⃣ Improved Collaboration and Cohesion: Internal storytelling fosters a sense of connection and shared purpose among team members, building cohesion and inspiring cultural change. This unity is crucial for driving collective efforts towards common goals. 3️⃣ Strategic Impact: Combining data with storytelling enhances the strategic impact of marketing efforts. It allows for creating compelling narratives that resonate with target audiences, driving engagement and loyalty. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Matt Wallaert’s book, Start at the End, has evolved my approach to business by: (1) codifying a scientific method for centering the customer, and (2) sequencing the requisite considerations toward making impact in a scaleable framework. He came to speak to Philo about applying behavioral science to streamline business prioritization with customer psychology at the center. It boils down to recognizing that businesses, products, and advertising are inherently designed to change behavior. Getting specific about the things that either promote or inhibit that behavior allow us to design specific interventions around them. KPIs are the way we figure out which interventions work, but are not the core objective. Matt's narrative style is a compelling mix of psychology, business cases, and snarky cultural commentary (some spicy takes for what he labels 'Mad Men' marketing, but I'll let it slide for now). I highly recommend to any folks trying to orient their businesses toward bigger leaps.

Thank you James Pursey from Replicate Labs and Jonathan M K. from GTM AI Academy for the exciting conversation about how we can use call AI to automate the Observation & Feedback (Scoring) of sales calls, freeing line managers to coach without having to observe. What distinguishes the Replicate solution is, it trains on your own data, so over time, it knows exactly how your customers behave, and how your top-performers behave. It can score calls objectively and provide feedback on where to focus. It can also role-play effectively because the customer personas are built on your data. Skeptical? Compared to what? Most salespeople get little to no feedback or coaching. Any practice is better than none, and if it is customized to your sellers and customers, even better. Having most recently come off a 2-year project involving 3,000 sales agents and hundreds of line managers, I am struck by the potential scale of financial impact: lowered costs from coaches and QA analytics not having to observe, and more personalized coaching to boost performance by focusing on select behaviors rather than mass, on-size-fits-all, training events. The biggest telecom providers could benefit in the billions (including enhanced share price) from effectively implementing a solution like Replicate's. For those looking to implement the model Steve Johnson and I wrote about in Next Level Sales Coaching, it's a game-changer in terms of freeing up time for coaching, and consistency of what we are coaching to.
