Social isolation among older adults is a pressing concern with serious implications for a person's health and well-being. Limited engagement in activities and community interaction can exacerbate this issue, potentially leading to life-altering conditions like heart disease and dementia. Centralina Area Agency on Aging is actively addressing this challenge in our regional communities through education and outreach efforts to empower residents and stakeholders to recognize and combat social isolation. Discover more about the epidemic and how we're making a difference: https://loom.ly/7E814TY

CareAlly
Having conversations about caregiving and aging early is essential in helping families increase care options and reduce stress. Unfortunately, most families wait until there's a crisis before they have these discussions. We started CareAlly to help families be proactive in planning for the challenges of caregiving and aging. It's encouraging to see others elevate this need. https://lnkd.in/ebNaa8T5 #careplanning

So many lessons learned in #digitalrehab over the years. A really fun discussion covering many efforts over the past 10 years - early successes and current challenges. The discussion ended with an overall optimistic view of #digitaltools as a necessary part of the #rehabtherapists toolkit

Bruce Fischer writes a good thread to thwart off what I call “BRT” Broken Record Thinking in his thread entitled, “How to Generate Ideas” @ https://lnkd.in/eupBNiTd Here’s a snippet… We all are born with curiosity. It’s essential in helping us adapt to the world. Then it is subtly discouraged by a “system” that promotes the status quo. That needs to be resisted. Be observant and ask questions. Listen to others with different perspectives. Experiment and test your ideas. Be persistent. Why is it that some people seem to have lots of ideas and others don’t? If you feel like you struggle to generate ideas, there are a few simple techniques that can help transform you into an “idea person.” We call the process of coming up with new concepts “ideation.” Ideation is the generation of ideas. Ideas become innovations when they are successfully implemented. Innovations improve our quality of life and entrepreneurs create jobs by commercializing them. Here are some ways to ideate: Ask questions Write Your Ideas Down: Think Associatively: Put Ideas to the Test: Persistence is a key attribute of a creative person. Creativity propels innovation and offers great rewards. Societies and organizations need to encourage innovation. That is the reason for a historic abundance of innovation in the United States. Our patent laws and economic system draw innovators from abroad. The US continues to be a place where ideas are supported more than in other parts of the world. You Generated an Idea. Now What? Most serial innovators and other creative people have a technique for monitoring their progress. They have goals for certain innovative output. My recommendation is to set a quantitative goal that is challenging but attainable. The more ideas you come up with the more likely you are to get some that are useful. Very few significant ideas are ready to be implemented at first blush. They invariably need to be modified, even during implementation. Ideation should be an ongoing process. Often the best goal is to expect continuous improvement. A certain amount of time set aside daily for ideation will help to maintain your focus on innovation. What motivates most creative people is the joy of discovery in the pursuit of something they are passionate about. Know the difference between a setback and a failure. Ideation rarely fails. When an idea is not sufficient it almost always is a link to a new possibility. Stay on the trail. Approach the idea from another angle for a different perspective. Appreciate simplicity. And always observe. The only way you can fail is if you quit! Try Something New Set goals for your creative efforts. What idea(s) did you have last week? When you keep track of your progress, it will be evident if you are getting results. Then act. Ideas are just dreams until you implement them. Make your dreams come true!

As we continue to celebrate the first anniversary of Drew Remignanti’s The Healing Connection, we reflect on significant conversations shaping the healthcare landscape. One standout is his article, “The Compassion Crisis in U.S. Health Care,” featured on KevinMD. Remignanti discusses the alarming decline in empathy within the healthcare system due to physician burnout and systemic inefficiencies. He emphasizes the need for prioritizing patient-centered care and supporting healthcare workers to foster compassion and improve patient outcomes. https://lnkd.in/d4iUV9EJ

Indeed a turning point for women's health. I am not a political person, but this is something I can proudly support. Very proud of my friends Liz Powell, Jodi Neuhauser, and Candace McDonald for launching this Women's Health PAC who have the support of thousands of women in the healthcare industry. With more money, research, information, innovation, funding, and focus on women's health... everyone wins. Including men. This is not exclusive, this ensures inclusion of all people, especially women who have been excluded from most of the above including in healthcare. Equity ensures equality, and without a focus on women's health there will be not achievement of equity. #healthequity #healthequityforwomen #womenshealth #women #equality #womeninhealth #womenleaders #womeninleadership #womeninmedtech #PAC #womenshealthPAC

An interesting new Medicare pilot program that’s beginning to look at the essential role of caregiving in successful home healthcare models. Here’s the rub for me though… These programs rely upon family caregivers - for elders and people with disabilities. Absent a family caregiver, the patient doesn’t qualify. We need programs that are patient centered - designed to uphold the civil rights of people with disabilities or seniors who wish to remain in their homes. If the govt will pay an able bodied family caregiver, or offer respite, why won’t comparable services be provided to the disabled/elder person? In the absence of a family caregiver, comparable services might mean that a patient can hire a caregiver - with the govt subsidizing the cost. Note that this is relevant in cases of family dysfunction and where there isn’t a caregiver.

The STOP Obesity Alliance analyzed the state Medicaid coverage data for plan year 2023, with both the Medicaid Fee for Service and top Medicaid Managed Care plans for each state were analyzed. The review included the categories of comprehensive obesity care: nutrition counseling, intensive behavioral therapy, obesity medications, and metabolic and bariatric surgery. Overall, obesity treatment coverage was not covered in fourteen states, twenty-nine states had restrictive coverage, eight states had limited coverage, and no single state covered obesity care. In more detail, twenty-two states did not provide coverage for nutritional counseling, one state failed to provide any coverage for intensive behavioral therapy, obesity medications were not covered in thirty-two states, and only two states did not provide coverage for metabolic and bariatric surgery. Across all evidence-based obesity treatments, no state provided coverage for comprehensive obesity care, with all states applying various levels of exclusions, limitations, or restrictions for the coverage of obesity treatments. https://lnkd.in/eMwjSUMV

https://lnkd.in/g65ZSVne Transformative Healthcare Policy Alert! The #NoSurprisesAct is a game-changer for millions of #Americans, bringing essential financial protections in #healthcare. A recent study in JAMA highlights the powerful impact of this new #legislation on healthcare spending. Some of the key points: 1). Shielding #Patients: The Act eliminates surprise #medicalbills from out-of-network providers, ensuring that emergency service costs align with in-network rates. 2). Financial #Relief: During the pandemic, out-of-pocket spending initially dropped and has since stabilized, showing the Act's effectiveness in protecting patients from devastating #medicalbills. 3). #Transparency Boost: Providers now must give clear, upfront cost estimates, helping patients avoid unexpected #expenses. This move not only eases financial stress but also promotes a fairer, more #transparent healthcare system. It’s a significant step towards a competitive #healthcare market that benefits everyone. Let's keep pushing for policies that protect and empower patients! #HealthcareReform #PatientAdvocacy #NoSurprisesAct #MedicalBilling #HealthcareTransparency

Thrilled to see there are THREE articles about #HealthcarePlanning in the most recent "Weekend Reading For Financial Planners" from Kitces.com ⭐️ Article 1: "HSAs As 'Medical IRAs': A Great But Neglected Strategy" by Steve Garmhausen, Financial Advisor Magazine: HSAs offer a "Triple Tax Benefit" that includes tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth, and tax-free withdrawals for qualified medical expenses. Medical expenses in retirement and the unique tax benefits of HSAs mean that these accounts can be a valuable supplemental retirement vehicle, AKA, a "Medical IRA." The article then goes on to talk about how #FinancialAdvisors can help clients understand HSAs and use them effectively. ⭐️ Article 2: "Assessing Health Insurance Options For Early Retirees" by Gail MarksJarvis, The Wall Street Journal: This is a topic we talk about a lot at Caribou; in fact, I'm quoted in the section of this article that talks about short-term health plans. Clients retiring before 65 have a unique situation when it comes to their healthcare coverage options to bridge the time between their retirement date and becoming Medicare-eligible. Financial advisors can add significant value to their clients by comparing the various options and helping them select the one that meets their needs, preferences, and budget. ⭐️ Article 3: "Helping Clients Plan For (Unknown) Retirement Healthcare Expenses" by John Manganaro, ThinkAdvisor: This article highlights the data from a study conducted by HealthView Services, Inc. showing the estimated costs of healthcare expenses in each year of retirement. The study suggests that an individual using a fixed-withdrawal-rate approach from their portfolio might find that they have insufficient assets to cover larger late-in-life medical bills. The article goes on to stress how important is for advisors to focus on retirement planning for clients as they near their retirement date. As I always say when talking about healthcare cost estimates, it's a good starting place...but for truly accurate and comprehensive financial plans, personalized HealthPlanning Analyses are a must. What was your favorite article in the most recent "Weekend Reading For Financial Planners"? Comment below! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eZwnYx-6

Commonwealth Fund always does great work and their most recent report has lots of good nuggets - none of which are surprising but rather confirmatory to everything that is already known. A few highlights: Primary care is foundational to good health as we all know. It's the one health service that provides a) Care Access, b) Comprehensiveness, c) Continuity, and d) Coordination throughout lifespan. While 86% of US citizens had "access" to primary care, only 43% said they had a "relationship". Big difference! Both #'s are much lower for people under age 43 - digital natives have different expectations including expectations for streamlined access to providers via tech. Most everyone has now integrated behavioral health into their primary care practice - both screening for mental health as well as having a coordinate way to get patients to the right mental health services. This is a big improvement over as little as 10 years ago. Most primary care providers do not have the resources / bandwidth to provide the care coordinations services (let alone the innovation) requested or required by their patients. Huge opportunity to have integrated "primary care led navigation". Should NOT be so hard to coordinate care w/existing tools. Conclusion - Investing in primary care (we need to increase primary care expenditure 2.5x to draw even with rest of world). Payment reform would grow workforce (incentives more people to enter the field), create market incentives to integrate/enhance care models (prospective payments allow purchasers to direct innovation), and provide capital for most efficient / innovative to deliver even better results (which means better outcomes in all dimensions - clinical, quality, experiential, and financial). Have loved seeing more and more employers take the lead in choosing to make foundational investments in primary care as a means to organize their health benefits ecosystem more effectively and efficiently. Progress!

Many older adults in the U.S. live on relatively low incomes, even with Social Security benefits, our analysis finds. In 2022, about 6 million (10.2%) seniors had incomes below the official poverty measure, with this figure rising to about 8 million (14.2%) under the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which accounts for medical expenses as well as other financial elements not included in the official measure. Learn more about how poverty rates vary among the older population by demographics like gender and race/ethnicity, as well as at the state level:
