What do you do if your focus as an engineering manager keeps getting interrupted?
Scheduling email time can also limit task switching to address emails. Triage your task list at least weekly (and review daily) to ensure the important items are prioritized. Understand your teams resourcing and project priorities if need to defer a program. If you’re in operations, train your skills set for the next level down to provide earlier response to line escalations which could eat into your focus time.

How can an organization ensure employee commitment to TQM?
Individual performance bonuses and team bonuses like a catered lunch are nice ways to drive focus and reward performance. Typically these would be tied to set scrap reduction or increased throughput. Driving engagement from the bottom up with incentives and rewards will yield the best results. Production staff who work on the process all the time know the issues. In one case a company put in an expensive check weigher, which wasn't finding the empty box defects they'd previously had and expected it to reject. Management found out a maintenance tech put a fan before the check weigher to blow empty boxes off the line because the check weigher would stop the line if it found an empty box.

What are the best practices for translating your SOP design and layout into other languages?
In addition to using short simple sentences, adding pictures or drawings can provide more detail. Pictures don't require translation. Sometimes having non technical staff review drafts can help point out jargon you'd assume would translate. Bilingual staff or consultants can also support training the trainer to help avoid issues with translation or differing interpretations.

How do you simplify complex manufacturing projects?
Understand the intent of the design, and the process. Sometimes there's better and cheaper ways to produce the same result. Consider design for manufacturing changes. During development manufacturing errors are often deferred or rationalized as not issues with the design because of a failure to meet a specification. However to solve these issues later often requires a design change. 2 defects out of 20 is fine for development but painful and costly when you start making thousands or millions.
