Ersnt & Young have recently said private debt is having a "golden moment" as an investment class of choice. McKinsey have observed that private debt has topped private markets in fundraising growth, assets under management and performance in 2023. Goldman Sachs announced a few weeks ago plans to substantially increase its private debt portfolio from US$130b to US$300b over next five years citing the "huge opportunity" in the sector. Likewise, Morgan Stanley is looking to double its portfolio in the medium term. Research house PreQin forecasts private debt will grow an average 11% reaching US$2.8 trillion by 2028, taking it from a niche to mainstream investment strategy. This movement is not just seen at the top end of town, with individual investors and family offices increasing their portfolio allocation to private debt. Why? While giants like Ardian and Lexington Partners claim the secondaries spotlight, smaller players are quietly making a splash in the lower end of the market. Case in point: CF Private Equity, the PE arm of asset management firm Commonfund, which earlier this month closed its fourth secondaries fund at $1.1bn, surpassing its $750m target. Despite the challenging fundraising environment for PE at large, the firm's latest fund demonstrates the continued appeal of secondaries as a diversification strategy and entry point into private equity for high-net-worth individuals and family offices. The vehicle, Commonfund Capital Secondary Partners IV, significantly outperformed its predecessor, which closed at $675m in 2021. Cari Lodge, global head of secondaries at CF Private Equity, recently shared with Secondaries Investor that the fresh capital is expected to be deployed within the next three years, focusing on small deals in the $5m-$15m range, primarily in the US and Europe. The firm believes that the small end of the secondaries market offers the most opportunities and inefficiencies, with sellers being less price-sensitive due to the smaller impact on their portfolios. A couple of atypical deals made in recent days demonstrate how investors are pushing the envelope in the fast-growing secondaries market. The two transactions – MLC Asset Management Private Equity's $762m continuation fund and Blackstone's sale of a $1.1bn fund portfolio to Ares Management Corporation – showcase the increasing sophistication and flexibility of secondary transactions. The MLC deal is particularly noteworthy because it involves an LP-led continuation fund, a structure typically associated with GP-led transactions. In this case, StepStone Group took the lead on the deal, which involves creating a new vehicle to hold $632m of MLC's mid-market fund positions and co-investments across North America, Europe, and the UK. The vehicle also raised $130m of fresh capital for new investments. This approach allows MLC to access further differentiated opportunities while bringing in new capital and expertise from StepStone. It's a win-win for all parties involved and demonstrates the creative solutions that secondaries can provide to LPs looking for liquidity or portfolio management options. Meanwhile, Blackstone's sale of a $1.1bn portfolio to Ares Management is a rare example of a "tertiary" transaction. Blackstone's Strategic Partners unit, known as a prominent secondary buyer, is the seller in this case, offloading a portfolio of older fund stakes it had previously acquired from institutional investors. These deals highlight the maturation of the secondaries market, with major players engaging in transactions to optimize their portfolios and deploy capital effectively. In today’s slower PE dealmaking environment, secondary transactions are becoming an increasingly vital source of liquidity for investors. LP portfolio sales reached $60bn last year, up from $53bn in 2022, according to PJT Partners. With total secondary deal volume increasing by 20% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2023, it's clear that this market is only going to become more important in the months and years ahead. #PE #secondaries #privateequity

Hamilton Lane recently closed its largest-ever fund, raising $5.6bn to buy and sell private equity assets on the secondary market.    Given the sheer size of this fund, it’s clear LPs are interested in gaining exposure to returns generated on the secondary market.     Investors include a variety of institutions, including corporate and public pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, endowments, foundations and private wealth platforms.    Against a backdrop of high interest rates, reduced IPO activity and a drop in private market valuations, fund managers are increasingly looking to the secondary market to generate liquidity and realise returns for their investors.    Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/e8VaJH3m    #HamiltonLane #AssetManager #PrivateMarkets #SecondaryMarket #Globacap
