Supportability Measures Required to Reduce Maintenance Downtime of Commercial Vehicles

ABSTRACT: Systems engineering, as a discipline, is concerned with each phase of the product life-cycle – from conceptual requirements, through design, production, fielding, operations, support and its eventual removal from service. This research focuses on the operations and support life cycle phases, and in particular the opportunities within the maintenance function trade space for reducing vehicle downtime. Specific attention is given to:
• Mapping the maintenance function trade…ABSTRACT: Systems engineering, as a discipline, is concerned with each phase of the product life-cycle – from conceptual requirements, through design, production, fielding, operations, support and its eventual removal from service. This research focuses on the operations and support life cycle phases, and in particular the opportunities within the maintenance function trade space for reducing vehicle downtime. Specific attention is given to:
• Mapping the maintenance function trade space.
• Discussing how traditional logistics measures can be applied to the trade space.
• Examining the maintenance function trade space of organizations within the central Florida, USA geographic region.
This is accomplished through the review of commercial vehicle fleet repair operations in central Florida during the operations and support life cycle phase, examining how each of these organizations operate within the trade space, the maintenance data they collect and analytics used for managing repair operations. Actual repair data will be gathered through interviews with fleet directors from several organizations with fleets between 250 to 1,850 vehicles. A review of this data, and its impact within the maintenance function trade space, will be conducted.
This research will identify the critical measures necessary for reducing operational downtime, resulting in improved fleet operational availability.
