Too many people talk a big game about AI, only to find out they're not actually using it themselves - and it's really bothering me. We just went through the Web3 & NFT hype, and it gave technologists a really bad reputation. More often than not, we're seen as people that talk but don't deliver. AI is fundamentally different because the technology exists *today* and is having an impact *today*, but too many people have accumulated a following just by talking a good game. And when you ask them how they're using AI themselves, they are unable to answer you... As such, is it a surprise people get disillusioned? But it is doing real harm, because it prevents people from engaging, which in turn leads to more people being caught off guard when they finally do realise this time is different. We're trying to do our small part by focusing our Mindstone AI meetups on live-demos instead of "talking to slides". Anything else we can do? It's no GPT-5 but today's spring announcements from OpenAI were still very exciting. My top 3 things: 1) A huge upgrade for free users. GPT-4 level model was a game changer for me, especially with the ability to analyze uploaded files. I'm very excited that this is now the entry point for everyone. 2) Everyone now gets access to the GPT marketplace. Another huge win for free users. GPTs are a game changing feature, whether you build your own or use the GPT store. 3) And finally, the ability to share your desktop with ChatGPT, so that it can watch your screen and help. There are 2 sides to people who suddenly became AI experts: 1) Being a BS artist and simply following the latest trends to regurgitate the topic to someone who is even less clueless. Before AI, it was VR & the Metaverse, Web 3 & Crypto, Design Thinking... 2) Being a lifelong learner able to quickly adapt and jump into a topic, sharing what you learn along the way. You can still follow trends, immerse yourself quickly, then make your own judgment call. For AI, it's - using the tools - creating your own use cases - learning the foundations (models, platforms, programming) So, next time you see an "AI bro" here, ask yourself whether it's 1 or 2. --- PS: I got some flag about posting AI related topics. I don't claim to be an expert in them. That said, I did have an introduction to AI and 4 seminars on the topic back at the university, such as HMM in ML.

Claude is an absurdly good editor. - Instant - Huge context windows - High level or specific, detailed feedback Here's a few ways I'm using it: 1. To get ratings I'm analytical. I want numbers. So, I give Claude a scale like: 1-20: Bad, tons of issues issues, not engaging  21-40: Below average, lots of weaknesses  41-60: Average, has potential but needs a lot of work  61-80: Good, engaging but with some areas for improvement  81-100: Excellent, highly compelling and well-written Then tell it something along the lines of,  "You are an expert [INSERT CATEGORY] editor with 20+ years of experience. How would you rate this [INSERT THING] on a scale of 1 to 100, using the below scale? [SCALE] [YOUR PIECE FOR EDITING]" That, by itself, gives you a good barometer for if your writing is any good. Bonus: Tell it round numbers like 50, 70, etc are not allowed. 2. Next, I want specifics, especially on how the writing can be improved. Here's one series of prompts I use: "Explain your reasoning for the [INSERT SCORE], including strengths and weaknesses of the piece. Be detailed." If you have a specific framework you like, you can have Claude use it here. Or just let it make one for you. Then, I like to dig into the weaknesses. Use a prompt like this: "Dig into the weaknesses. Explain how you would edit to turn them into strengths. Give specific examples and ideas." It's a real-time writing coach in your pocket. Is this stuff interesting? I'm playing with it a lot more and will write more on it if helpful

Equity for all developers is how Open Source moves forward. " ... the nonprofit organizations that have emerged in recent decades to manage many longtime open-source projects have in many cases remained relatively modest operations. For example, the The Apache Software Foundation was formed in 1999 to oversee the open-source Apache web server, which is still used to run more than 20% of websites by some estimates. But the organization reported under $1.8 million in revenue for fiscal 2022, and its leaders receive no compensation." The Linux Foundation, by comparison to Apache and modest products "is designated as a 501(c)6, a tax-exempt category for nonprofit organizations like chambers of commerce, sports leagues and business leagues." Therein lies the rub for many of us and debate happening out there has been simmering for a long time. I have been in Open Source since 1999. Several years ago I ran the LF / OSS initiative for a public company. The company was open source from the start but prior to me the LF was a sore point for them. After writing a hefty check it took 6 weeks to get added to the LF project's Slack channel or engage. When I tried to spearhead a program off the ground to spend our group marketing dollars on some positive numbers that benefitted us all (which is what we were paying for) I was told the timeline for rollout was 6 months and 3 votes outside my let's get it done now. I didn't expect huge success out of the relationship but was really stunned. It wasn't only me either. As the venerable Open Source reporter Steven Vaughan-Nichols penned at the time for ZDNET the lack of community representation at LF is unsettling. ( https://lnkd.in/gPCgb37P ) I like that Apache continues to be a model other communities emulate. I hope more projects take routes that are favorable to innovation that way. With the advent of AI, the future of software engineering appears at a crossroads. Lofty speculations and promises surrounding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) abound. Depending on one's perspective, opinions on this AI-enabled future vacillate between poles of optimism and pessimism, leaving many in a state of uncertainty about what lies ahead. On the pessimistic end of the spectrum, there are fears that the practice of coding, long considered a cornerstone of software engineering, may be rendered obsolete by AI. Conversely, optimists view the integration of AI as the next evolution of software engineering rather than its demise. Amidst these extremes stands healthy skepticism and/or realism. The gap between the promise of AI and its actual capabilities underscores the need for a balanced and informed perspective on its potential impact. Maybe we can adopt a balanced approach. By remaining adaptable, staying informed, and continuing to innovate, we can navigate the complexities of the AI-enabled future with confidence and purpose. Writing in #Web3 can be technical, but it shouldn’t be confusing… While it is easy to sound impressive with complex words, the users (readers) aren’t really interested in technical jargon like “modular multi-chain protocol.” They're more concerned about how your project can directly benefit them. So, you want to keep it as simple and concise as possible for beginner-level users. Multi-chain? Say your protocol works on several blockchains Instead of writing, ❌ “The interoperability of blockchain protocols enhances the scalability and utility of decentralized finance ecosystems." For beginners, Opt for: ✅ “Connecting blockchains makes it easier to use DeFi.” Simplicity is not about dumbing down your content; it is making sure anybody can understand what your project offers. The first big Internet wave of the 1990s was defined by open platforms and egalitarian culture that let innovators go from zero to one without passing through a corporate gatekeeper. The second wave of mobile and social in the 2010s was defined by proprietary monopolies controlled by a handful of giants like Apple, Google and Facebook (giving birth to the phrase "Big Tech"). I think we are at a defining moment at the dawn of the third big wave where Generative AI could go either way -- open standards that spawn a global playing field of small innovators or closed models that reinforce the incumbents and the status quo.
