Continuity of supply of products to healthcare systems is critical for national patient health. Risks abound in our supply chains, from geopolitical challenges to manufacturing and cyber. Understanding the changing nature of those risks helps supply chain leaders be prepared. In partnership with Lehigh University (my alma mater) and one of their business faculty Zach Zacharia, we've developed a new tool to help. This quarterly survey will allow supply chain leaders to assess the overall risk across eight key domains and determine whether the industry feels risk is increasing, decreasing or remaining constant. This will serve as a barometer, and hopefully help national awareness of issues as they arise and shift. All responses remain anonymous and results will be shared back with anyone taking it at the conclusion of the quarter. It's designed to be brief and easy to repeat, link is below. Let's discuss the JAMA study--everyone has asked me about it and that I need to post about it. Here's my personal opinion: This study should have been a slam dunk in #healthcare and #PBM insurance's favor. Isn't the point of insurance to keep costs at bay? The fact that we saved commercial insurance 7.1% of the time with cash pay is a testament to the fact that the #pharmacybenefits system in the US is totally broken....against health insurance that's allegedly keeping costs at bay. If insurance was doing its job, there should have been 0% savings! Insurance should have won every single time on savings. (But it did not.) The CMS Innovation Center (CMMI) announced the Transforming Episode Accountability Model, a proposed mandatory episode-based bundled payment model, is slated to begin in January 2026. It is among a list of alternative payment models supporting CMS's goal to have all Medicare beneficiaries in an accountable care relationship by 2030. The five-year model structure marks significant changes from previous versions and reflects how the approach to bundled payments is evolving.

The whole notion of “public trust” has become an oxymoronic notion, at least when it comes to issues surrounding Connecticut’s health insurance exchange Access Health Connecticut. A recent audit discovers numerous failures in leadership, administration and accountability that puts the privacy of participants at risk. “The audit, which studied the Exchange between the years of 2020 and 2021, found that the Exchange suffered 51 data breaches of clients’ personal information, one of which exposed 160 clients’ information, and three of which they failed to disclose to the Auditors and State Comptroller. These breaches occurred both through the Exchange itself, as well as five of its contractors, one of which incurred 14 data breaches. The audit noted that the Exchange is statutorily required to notify both the Auditors and State Comptroller of any security breaches, to which the Exchange pleaded ignorance.” In addition: “The audit found no list of Navigator program employees, who have access to client’s personal information, that had completed criminal background checks.” Further: ““A lack of internal controls increases the risk that clients receive improper health insurance coverage or are enrolled in programs they are not eligible for,” read the audit.” The piece goes on to describe a lack of accountability for expenditures and ineligible employee credit card expenditures. This is shameful behavior that potentially puts vulnerable citizens at risk. Taxpayers deserve and demand better. #accountability #ConnecticutGovernment #healthcare

With this recent update, The Joint Commission is offering a faster and more secure way to verify at Identity Assurance Level 2 (IAL2), which opens up the door for automated verification technology. CLEAR is well positioned to help health systems and organizations meet these new standards, offering real-time identity verification that is IAL2 and AAL2 certified. Many American’s Healthcare Information has Been Hacked According to the Justice Department, there were more than 400 cyberattacks on U.S. healthcare companies in 2023. The health information of at least 61 million people has been compromised. In response to these attacks, U.S. hospitals have paid $100 million to Russian ransomware hackers. On February 21, 2024, the BlackCat cybercriminal organization from Russia hacked UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare and stole 6 terabytes of data, including medical records and Social Security numbers. Change Healthcare processes about 15 billion healthcare transactions annually, handling 1 in 3 patient records. Therefore, it is likely that the health and personally identifiable information of many Americans has been compromised. The cybercriminals have posted 22 screenshots of the stolen health and personal data on the dark web. So far, UHC has paid $22 million in bitcoins to BlackCat.
