Some of the things that can happen when journalists think themselves somewhat nobler than other professions: “we become vulnerable to exploitation and abuse by leaders of news organizations who leverage our passion for the mission of journalism as an excuse to underpay, overwork, and keep us chained to our desks — or laptops or mobile phones. It’s better for all of us if newsroom leaders have to compete in the labor market for journalism talent against corporate communications and marketing departments. A seasoned professional journalist can accomplish so much in one day: take on a brand new topic, get up to speed, interview new sources, and turn out an article. We should be compensated well, given the challenge of these tasks.” Is anyone listening ?

🚨 Scholars interested in working with the media: In a survey of 1,000+ journalists on the state of journalism in 2024 by Muck Rack ... 83% of journalists prefer to be pitched 1:1 via email. 🔑 Make sure you personalize the message with specific mentions of their work, including their name, etc. Making sure the journalist covers your topic is also v important. 65% prefer pitches less than 200 words. 🔑 Keep it simple and succinct by just stating the most interesting part of the research - more than likely this is the findings! Lean into active language and cut the filler words. 46% receive 6 or more pitches daily. 🔑 Write a killer email subject line that is less than 60-80 characters, then get right to the point in your email body. Journalists consider subject matter experts (82%) and researchers (77%) to be the most credible sources. 🔑 That means you! What is SLUDGE CONTENT doing inside a puzzle? How did we get to learn about Lili Elbe when the answer ELBE almost always refers to the German river? Welcome to the crossword in the age of Gen Z. Clues require internet meme literacy. Solutions may reflect the identity of the person behind the puzzle. And the way they’re constructed can involve vibrant online forums in addition to scraps of paper. Grids these days are often “diaristic,” said Paolo Pasco, 23, the winner of this year’s American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, the Super Bowl of crosswords. They can reveal clusters of personal obsessions or glimpses of an idiosyncratic sense of humor. “That’s a big part of what got me into puzzles,” Mr. Pasco said. “This is an insight into the person’s brain who thought of that joke.” It’s a noticeable shift from decades past, when crosswords were usually faceless, less a site for auteurism than a form of anonymous entertainment. But thanks to a variety of factors — rapidly improving technology to create puzzles, a much wider array of outlets eager to publish them and a push to celebrate new voices — constructors today are more inclined to express themselves in their work.

It's shocking how many PR pros overlook this: Translating press materials and media pitches into languages other than English in diverse markets. For instance, your chances of securing press coverage in Spanish-language newspapers and TV in Miami—where 72% of the population is Hispanic—are significantly higher if you correspond with journalists and provide them with everything in Spanish. Pro tip: Consider the Spanish-speaking audience when filming your b-roll video interviews too. P.S. My Spanish skills are far from fluent. This week, the Los Angeles Times has shared a special story about 5-time Serie A champion and 2022 World Cup winner, Paulo Dybala. Paulo, and his teammate Messi, helped Argentina win its first World Cup title in 36 years. He has an incredible love story with Italy and is surely not done climbing mountaintops, as Kevin Baxter so beautifully writes it. Providing access to tell these compelling stories is crucial in being able to develop a new audience, and specifically in this case, an American audience. Who are the key players? What are their stories? Why should U.S. fans care? (e.g. watch, buy, become fans) Our task is to help fuel the growth of the league in this market, and in the process, the clubs and the players as well of course, and you'll find two great positioning statements on the league in this story to support that: "And in his time there he’s seen Serie A evolve, climbing back to the top of the UEFA rankings as the best league in Europe." “Football operates in cycles and now, with [coach] Luciano Spalletti, Italy can return to the level it deserves, that of a national team that has won the World Cup four times,” said Luigi De Siervo, Serie A’s chief executive. These points prompt the reader - the huge passionate fanbase Kevin enjoys in one of the most important football/soccer markets in the country, and nationally - to remember the greatness and then to find out more about Italian football and the league. Within one month's time, the media coverage I've been sharing here has contributed to 7k+ follower growth on Serie A's North American IG; and in just 4 months, we've been able to generate over $20M in brand value for the league. Latinas underrepresented in corporate America?? You don't say! "An underrepresentation of Latinas in entry-level corporate roles only worsens as their careers progress, making them the least-represented group of C-suite executives in the U.S., according to a new report.  Latinas encounter two critical “broken rungs” as they climb up the corporate ladder, according to the report. They are overlooked for management roles and then again for senior leadership roles. While Latinas hold just 4.9% of entry-level corporate jobs, the number shrinks to 3.3% at the managerial level and 2% for senior leadership roles.  “This holds Latinas back at a key moment when the C-suite is finally in view,” the report says." https://lnkd.in/gzYhhBnX

Paying for content keeps journalists employed. Good reporters who are investigating, uncovering, and holding powerful people and institutions accountable are vital to our society (and so are entertainment and leisure, and those writers are important to me too) And when we pay for it, writers get to keep their jobs, and a wider variety of publications are available to us. So don’t cheat around paywalls all of the time. If you own a PR agency, multiple subscriptions should be a non-negotiable line item of your annual budgets. I get it, subscriptions can be pricey. But I justify other, higher costs that have much lower stakes and maybe some of you do too?
