Five nights a week, MarÍa Elena Salinas looks into a television camera and delivers the news to millions of television viewers. But when the newscast is over, she is like so many other women across the country: a wife and a mother, struggling to find balance between her personal and professional life. When MarÍa Elena accidentally discovers her recently deceased father had once been a Catholic priest, all she knew was suddenly thrown into question. Turning her investigative eye on herself for the first time, she begins a long, arduous journey for answers.

In I Am My Father's Daughter, MarÍa Elena tells the amazing story of her journey to the top amid her struggle to come to terms with family secrets. From her childhood in a poverty-stricken neighborhood of Los Angeles and her adolescent years spent working in a sweatshop, to her astonishing break into network television, along with her coverage of some of the world's major events and disasters, Salinas frames her life behind the camera in the same warm and straightforward tone that is her on-air trademark.

María Elena Salinas is a record-setter. When she wraps up her final Noticiero Univision evening newscast at the end of this year, she will have served as a network anchor for 30 years — far longer than broadcast icons Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite or Peter Jennings, none of whom made it to a quarter-century.
Salinas’ longevity, her personal style and her commitment to Hispanic civic engagement have made her not only the face of Univision news, but a role model among Latino journalists in Spanish- and English-language media. And her tenure has coincided with huge increase in her potential audience: The U.S. Hispanic population has grown from 14 million in 1986 to 59 million today.
Salinas also hosts Univision’s news magazine show Aquí y Ahora, and she doesn’t just stay on the set. “I can’t stay behind the anchor desk for too long without going out and reporting a story.”

WASHINGTON, D.C.--Award-winning journalist and co-anchor of “Noticiero Univision” María Elena Salinas will be inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Broadcasting Hall of Fame at the 2017 NAB Show Television Luncheon on Monday, April 24 in Las Vegas.

Salinas began her journalism career in 1981 as a reporter, anchor and public affairs host at Univision’s KMEX-34 in Los Angeles. In January of 1987 she moved on to the network to anchor Noticiero Univision with co-anchor Jorge Ramos.

In 2015, Salinas received a Peabody Award, Walter Cronkite Award, an Emmy and Gracie for her documentary special "Entre el abandono y el rechazo" (Between Abandonment and Rejection), a prime-time report on the exodus of Central American children to the United States. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Mickey Leland Humanitarian award, and in 2012, she became the first Latina to receive an Emmy Award for Lifetime Achievement from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

“María Elena Salinas is an outstanding example of the profound effect broadcast television can have on the audiences it serves,” said NAB Executive Vice President of Television Marcellus Alexander. “María has a deep connection to the needs of the Latino community, and she represents their interests on and off the screen.”

In addition to her journalism career, Salinas has served as the spokeswoman for the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) for nearly two decades during their campaign to increase Latino voter engagement. NALEO assists immigrants with the American citizenship process, including registering to vote and participating in politics. For her work with the organization, she has been recognized by National Organization for Women, Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, among others.

Judges praised the “balanced and revealing” reporting from the point of view not of politicians, but of families in their countries of origin, which brought viewers face-to-face with women and children directly affected. “This kind of story is often left out of the immigration debate,” the judges said, noting that both reporter and camera crew put themselves in harm’s way in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala to get the story.
