The 2024 hurricane season was predicted to be highly active and sure enough it began dramatically with #HurricaneBeryl, which broke numerous records. “The really big takeaway for me,” Horton says of the increasing occurrence of climate events, “is that I believe we have underestimated the societal impacts, the damage caused by one-and-a-half degrees [of climate warming]. That is the biggest issue.”   Hurricane Beryl has, with shocking effect, once again demonstrated the accelerating impacts of global warming. Beryl is the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded. The storm also intensified from a tropical depression into a Category 4 hurricane in just 48 hours. After Beryl made landfall in Texas the hurricane knocked out power to around 2.7m households in the middle of a heat wave that the National Weather Service deemed potentially dangerous.   We believe the concept of climate adaptation remains nascent for investors. As weather extremes continue to intensify, the demands that will be placed on sectors such as residential and industrial cooling, property insurance and water purification, have the potential to holistically resize the market opportunity for these industries. Bluelining is the practice of denying financial and insurance services to areas that may be at higher risk for environmental or climate disasters Formerly #redlined communities–often low-income communities and communities of color– are at high risk of #bluelining due to historic disinvestment, leaving them with less resources to build resilience and bounce back after a climate disaster strikes. Low-income communities and communities of color face climate disasters at continuously high rates while financial institutions increase prices or withdraw services altogether, deepening the harmful and lasting legacy of redlining. This week, ClimateVoice joined Change the Chamber and 50+ organizations delivering a letter to member corporations of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. We are urging corporate members to advocate for meaningful climate policy leadership from the Chamber through strong and vocal climate policy advocacy. A supporting report released by the Senate Committee on the Budget titled Denial, Disinformation, and Doublespeak: Big Oil's Evolving Efforts to Avoid Accountability for Climate Change (https://lnkd.in/g7n2prRD) reveals how the Chamber's obstructionist tactics undermine climate policies, contradicting its 'sustainability' rhetoric. The letter was delivered on the same day that the Chamber hosted its “2024 Sustainability and Circular Economy Summit,” where corporate sustainability leaders, government officials, and others discussed “the crucial role that businesses play in sustainability and to share best-in-class strategies and effective policies.” The letter urges Chamber member companies to align with national and international climate targets and to proactively lobby for additional climate policies individually. 📝 👉 Full text of the letter: https://lnkd.in/gyj5Cwpz
