  • Respatialization and journalistic practices: where is the link?

In the length of this essay, a road was built to make the respatialization term of Scholte transit to this conclusion. Questions were made along the way in order to make the understanding of respatialization and supraterritorialization easier when related to journalistic practices. Taking a case study as the parameter for this research, the answers awaited for, although mainly already given, can be briefly summarized as follows.

First, respatialization means both improvement and worsening of reporting when it comes to journalistic practices. The balance between good and bad news reporting is left for future research though. It is worth noticing however that while technology has allowed many new ways for journalists to access, gather and share information, it also increased the amount of sources whose quality are dubious, to say the least.

Secondly, this also answers my question about why there is so much difference in the quality of news reporting the same story: as respatialization and supraterritoriality allow for more inter-connectivity, simultaneity and instantaneity, there are many factors that prevent journalists from writing a good quality story: their own local conditions or those of their surroundings are but two examples out of many aforementioned.

Finally, relations between local and global, the constant creation of new spaces of inter-personal relations and the supraterritorial aspect of current social interactions are intrinsic and fundamental to current journalistic practices, alongside traditional constrains faced by journalists, such as limited time and resources. This essay pointed some challenges, while future study on those and other challenges is strongly recommended. In other words: good journalism and the quality of reporting will benefit from a continuous improvement in the study of how respatialization correlates with good and bad journalistic practices.

Directly from Oslo, I sent to Estadão Online an interview I did with Nobel Peace Prize Committee president, Mr. Thorbjørn Jagland. The work was done on the 12th of October of 2012, the day the Committee announced the winner of the Peace Prize of that year to be the European Union. Mr. Jagland used to be Prime Minister of Norway and Minister of Foreign Affairs. A version of the interview he gave me is available in my blog: http://bit.ly/WTAqbT
