Ghost and General Mills have made possibly the sickest cereal collab yet: GHOST x General Mills Protein Cereal So how does one of the biggest wellness brands in the category land a partnership with a packaged food giant like General Mills? Brand resonance. Ghost has tapped into nostalgia and borrowed credibility through dozens of flavor collabs: ➝ Sonic ➝ Sour Patch Kids ➝ Swedish Fish ➝ Welch's Grape Juice ➝ Warheads ➝ Oreo ➝ Chips Ahoy ➝ Nutter Butter ➝ Cinnabon Not to mention, Ghost has an extensive network of influencers in the fitness, lifestyle, and gaming spaces — they've operated on a launch and stock model for years, creating massive hype and social promotion for new products they're consistently releasing. Ghost's DTC dominance and retail presence make them the perfect partner for General Mills, why? Their demographic is simple, but hard to hit for a traditional player: ➝ Younger Millennials to Gen Z ➝ Wanting great tasting, but healthy products ➝ Social first, builds identity with loyalty to brands Or as Doug Martin, Chief Brand Officer at General Mills said, "I am convinced this is a big business and the important thing here is that this is a distinct problem to solve at breakfast—what can I have that has protein, not a lot of sugar, and tastes good?" Enter Ghost Protein Cereal, which released two products last week: 1. Peanut butter: a proteinified Reese's Puffs (18g protein) 2. Marshmallow: a proteinified Lucky Charms (17g protein) Ghost used their launch model to push the new product on their site, and it will be in select stores later in April. One thing I’ve learned about Social Media is that a GOOD social strategy creates a strong presence the brand channels… But a GREAT social strategy creates a strong presence on the brand channels and maximizes the social channels of influencers, creators, and brand partners. There’s a lot more to social media than just what’s on the brand channels 🤷‍♂️

You know you’re in PR when… Your boss or client sends you back edits in a press release or blog post like this: - Uppercasing job titles after names, e.g., "John Smith, Director of Sales & Marketing." - Adding a comma before "and," e.g., "apples, oranges, and bananas." Neither of these follows AP style, the guidelines from The Associated Press Stylebook. According to AP, it should be "John Smith, director of sales & marketing" and “apples, oranges and bananas.” Using AP style in PR is important because it is the standard used by most journalists. You’re essentially writing for the news, and adhering to these guidelines makes it easier for journalists to pick up your stories without additional edits. This not only shows respect for their time but also increases the likelihood of your message being conveyed accurately and efficiently. Neglecting AP style can irritate reporters and hurt your media relations. In college, I had to memorize the entire AP Stylebook in order to pass the class. And for that, I’m thankful! P.S. One thing I’ve learned about working in Social Media is that a GOOD strategy creates high performing posts… But a GREAT strategy enables you to become an always-on brand and community building machine. I am a huge fan of e.l.f. cosmetics and Tarang Amin. We partnered with elf in the early days of their advertising journey when they were testing in digging out of the lower funnel. Wow, have they ever. They take chances, are authentic and successful because of inspiring leadership and bravery. The latest WSJ article highlights their belief that advertising and marketing can do great things. Believe me, they have the performance marketing side of the house down...but they are equally strong in Brand, and that's what is driving their increases in ad budget when the rest of the market is in a wait-and-see pattern. I love seeing #marketing budgets boosted, but basing it on sales raises several issues: 1. Should your sales decline, your marketing budget will obviously decline, too, even though it should be increased. 2. If competitors increase their spending, you might not have the budget to respond. 3. Sales can lag marketing, sometimes by months. And the impact on brand value (and profitability) can take years. Here's an alternative approach: Instead of basing your marketing budget on sales, allocate a fixed amount, with built in flexibility to respond to the market. https://lnkd.in/gwMgSiRg

When a brand’s social post goes viral, don’t just consider whether or not you like it or if it was in good or bad taste. Because it’s true what they say: You might not be the target audience. Consider the broader implications too, because this isn’t creative in a vacuum. And audiences don’t cut paychecks. Employers do. Don’t just take it from me… Here’s a quote from the PBR social media manager who was fired over that Dry January post: “Speaking exclusively to ADWEEK, Smale says what’s been on his mind is the responsibility that social media managers have in terms of creating a brand voice that doesn’t just resonate with a core audience but also has buy-in from co-workers across the organization.” Let me know what you think 🤔 Shoutout to Daniel Levey for speaking on this topic too. The 2 questions you should be asking if you want to be successful in licensing. I love me a good Cinnabon. They're soft, super indulgent, hot and gooey Cereal unfortunately is none of those things. Marketers, before you approach a brand to license you need to ask these 2 questions. 1. Can I bring this experience to life in an authentic way? 2. Ask question number 1 again with a little more honesty. Master this and watch your licensing success rate soar, become the partner everyone seeks out, and save a ton of money in the process.

Social Media Friends: Friendly reminder to tally up and add back your collab post metrics on Instagram account(s). For those brand (or any for that matter) accounts that utilize the "collaborator" posts feature on Instagram - ONLY the account/person that initiates the post gets the metrics counted into their reporting directly. So if you are a brand account, and one of your influencers/pro team/ambassadors/brand or media partners makes a post with you as a collaborator - you won't see the engagement + reach + views + etc. reflected directly in your account's reports/metrics. Which is a bit of shame, as this is one of my favorite features on Instagram and great way to work with the above partners. But you will need to and in my opinion, SHOULD manually go back to track and report those metrics separately from the native in-app or 3rd party (ie. Hootsuite or similar) platform reports. For example one of my client's brand accounts had over 16mil views+ 586k engagements on collaborator REELS YTD that would be otherwise semi-unaccounted for if not manually tracked. Which to me, can't be disregarded as a driving force of account performance + growth + etc. What do you think?
