Dehumanization – denying another of their full human worth – is a root cause of many historical atrocities. Two factors that play an especially prominent role in the occurrence and perpetuation of dehumanization are: 1) the influence of a manipulative authority figure, and 2) threats to one’s own sense of human worth. The current research examined the interactive effect of these two elements on individuals’ tendencies to dehumanize others. Participants’ own sense of human worth was manipulated by having them imitate either a parent helping a child (humanizing condition) or a sewer rat (dehumanizing condition). Then, under either high vs. low authority pressure to dehumanize, participants were asked to choose the next subject’s acting task from a list of various humanizing or dehumanizing tasks. Participants also rated how dehumanized they would expect the next participant to feel upon acting out the chosen task. Data were analyzed using a 2x2 ANOVA. We discovered that participants who were dehumanized were more likely to choose a task that they believed would cause people to feel more dehumanized after the task.
