People love coming to the office for other people... (and for focused work.) I recently caught up with Gensler's global director of workplace research, Janet Pogue McLaurin, FAIA, FIIDA. According to their new report, people value social connections and collaborative environments, making the office an essential hub for interaction and teamwork: ⚪ Team Dynamics: 81% of employees in strong teams prefer sitting with their colleagues, enhancing team dynamics and awareness of each other's work​​, compared to just 50% of those in the weakest teams. ⚪ Socializing: For the most engaged employees, socializing is nearly twice as important for job performance as it is for their less engaged counterparts​​. ⚪ Collaborative Work: Offices provide an ideal setting for team meetings and collaborative tasks, which are key reasons workers, especially those in innovative companies, choose to come into the office​​. ⚪ Learning and Development: Young professionals often spend significant time on learning and professional development, which the report says is best facilitated in a collaborative office environment​​. A few more great stats from the report: ⚪ People spend half their typical workweek in the workplace, 20% at home, and 29% in other locations such as coworking spaces, client or customer sites, and business travel. Pre-pandemic, this average was closer to 70% of time in the office. ⚪ For the first time, global office workers spend the same amount of time (40%) working alone as they do working with others in-person and virtually, on average.  ⚪ Just 35% of the least engaged individuals report that learning and professional development are critical to performing their job, compared to 71% of the most engaged.  ⚪ When employees at the most innovative companies are in the office, nearly three-quarters of their meetings are “hybrid”—involving both in-person and virtual attendees—compared to just half of those in the least innovative companies. ⚪ In high-performing workplaces, 94% of employees have a choice in where they work within the office.  ⚪ 96% of employees in high-performing workplaces say they have control over how they manage their time at work, compared to just over half of those in low-performing workplaces. ⚪ The best workplaces perform within a building and neighborhood ecosystem As Janet noted in our conversation, for all the reasons above, building the perfect office is as much about design as it is about culture and highly intentional planning. In this week's Between World's podcast, I speak with Tim Fu, founder of Studio Tim Fu and one of the world’s leading experts in leveraging AI in architecture and construction. Fu established his practice in 2023 after working at Zaha Hadid Architects and now heads a diverse team of architects and technologists, creating innovative workflows and designs that embrace AI's transformative power in architectural practice. Most recently, he was chosen to be a collaborating artist with OpenAI's new Sora generative AI platform. In a discussion recorded in his London based studio, we spoke about the intersection of artificial intelligence and architecture. Fu explained that while AI can generate a wide range of design options quickly, architects and humans in general, are still essential. In his view, the ability to make decisions, understand cultural and historical context, and balance various factors like sustainability, engineering, and social space is what sets architects apart, even when using AI tools. We covered a wide range of topics including parametric design, the potential for AI to create new architectural aesthetics, and how AI is changing the workflow of architecture firms. Fu described how his firm uses AI to generate matrices of design options for clients, allowing for more visual conversations early in the design process. Naturally, we also talked about the provocative issue of copyrighting architectural styles in the age of AI. Gensler recently published a Global Workplace Survey with over 16,000 respondents across 10 industries and 15 countries. Here are my takeaways: - Diverse programming more thoughtfully meets the needs of employees across a spectrum and employees are positively impacted by greater access to spaces that allow them to relax and recharge throughout the work week. The quantity of amenities has a strong correlation to workplace performance. - Companies that invest in a variety of amenities foster a higher sense of employee empowerment, value, and autonomy, all of which increase employee engagement. - Building quality and local amenities matter. How and why a site/campus/neighborhood is chosen should be considered in Real Estate standards and guidelines. In other words, don't put lipstick on a pig, avoid investing in a pig altogether. - High performing workplaces have layered experiences. Consider the scale of experience from architectural impact on a sense of welcome and safety, to quality finishes that evoke a sense of value, to spatial function on the details level (acoustics, privacy, lighting, messaging through EGD) that directly impact productivity and focus. - The best workplaces may require a more thoughtful approach to onboarding employees. Creating intuitive and immersive tours to educate new users will allow them to hit the ground running and kickstart their productivity in their new workspace. LMN's updated Sustainability Action Plan outlines our pathways to design zero carbon operational buildings by 2030 (we were 85% of the way there in 2023), target best in class for the top 15 embodied carbon materials through research and performance specifications, target the top materials for supply chain equity and chemicals of concern, water conservation, circular economy, and much more! We include firm goals, processes, and pilot areas where we will experiment. Dive in, send any comments or questions. 🏢 Architects: Understanding what you need to care for yourself is the foundation of personal well-being and lasting success. I felt energized and inspired after an incredible week at AIA'24, reconnecting with old friends and finally meeting new ones in person after countless Zoom calls and LinkedIn exchanges. The conference was a whirlwind of hugs, thank yous, and see you soons. But, as an introvert, the crash after the high is real. Returning home, I found myself completely drained. Thankfully, my supportive family was there, providing the cuddles and quiet time I needed to recoup and recharge. Understanding what you need to care for yourself and creating the space to do that is the foundation of personal well-being and lasting success. Today, I’m embracing this Monday to find my center again, acknowledging that as much as we thrive on these dynamic interactions, our well-being requires attention and care. Great to see Caitlin Turner, director of Interiors at HOK, share her thoughts on workplace design and the move away from hot desking in Bloomberg News! “Clients don’t want to give employees any excuse not to come in. If you want them to share desks, they say, ‘Why should we?’” With office occupancy still shifting post-pandemic, dedicated desks are seen as a way to make the office more appealing and encourage office attendance.
