We asked them to apply, thankfully they did. Now we have a responsibility to them. With another round of RIFs, as hiring managers, there are easy steps in the application communication process we need to be using, otherwise it's a black eye on ourselves and our companies. I've been on both sides of this, as a hiring manager and an applicant. Here's what I've learned... If we advertise an opening and get an application, email an acknowledgement of receipt. Auto-replies are fine. If an applicant emails something during this process, don't ghost them. A "Thanks, got it" or "Interesting" will suffice. If an applicant isn't being or no longer being considered, that's okay. Don't ghost them. Cut them loose so they're not left wondering. "We're focused on a few others but wish you continued success". Once we’ve filled the position, the other applicants we have interviewed...in person, Zoom or by phone...deserve a short personal phone call from us letting them know. Not an email, text or voicemail. Finally, after all of the steps above have been completed, release it to the industry trades. It's terrible to have applicants find out in the trades that the position has been filled. They've probably spent hours doing online applications, preparing audio, listening observation documents, completing questionnaires, discussing and investing emotion into the process for us. No excuses for doing the right thing. Much of the above is copy and paste. Not difficult or time consuming. It's simple, kind communication and not forgetting how we’d like to be treated ourselves. For my TV weather colleagues, the NWS is making a change soon that may affect you. On May 20 - two weeks from today, as I type - the NWS will be relocating one of the key ob sites for the Los Angeles Area. Specifically, The so-called “Downtown Los Angeles” site, identifier KCQT, on the USC campus will be decommissioned and replaced with a new site near Dodger Stadium, identifier FHMC1. More on what’s happening and why is in the NWS service change notification: https://lnkd.in/gJqdxarZ Why does this matter to you? Two reasons: 1) If you have been pulling obs from the KCQT site as your “LA” ob, it’s going away in two weeks. 2) The replacement site will no longer be an ASOS - it will become a COOP network site, meaning you’ll need to add a MADIS layer to your maps to get current information, and you’ll no longer get sky condition reports. (FYI - There may be a delay in getting the data switched over, depending on your vendor. Check with your vendor for info.) ‘Hey, no big deal,” you might say, “we use KLAX for Los Angeles!” Sure, if you use KLAX, your data won’t go away in two weeks. But as George Carlin famously said, “no one lives at the airport.” Now, in LA, you’ve got a decent population cluster around LAX, but if you’ve ever been there, you know KLAX is right up near the Pacific and is often influenced by the marine layer, and conditions farther inland — where a lot more people live — can be very different. That’s reason there was a “Downtown LA” weather site in the first place. (And this is to say nothing of the myriad other microclimates in the LA area. SoCal forecasting is not for the faint of heart.) For what it’s worth, the NWS expects the new location to be even more representative for fire weather situations. From the SCN: “Moreover, the move will provide better sampling of weather conditions conducive for the spread of brush fires closer to the foothills, and thus better assist NWS meteorologists in forecasting fire-weather conditions.” What should you do? Check your maps to see whether you’re using KLAX or KCQT for Los Angeles data. - If you’re using KLAX, just know that your obs aren’t as representative of most of DTLA and environs as the other sites are, especially on marine layer and fire weather days. (File that under the “know your data!”) - If you’re using KCQT, you’ll need to retool your maps to either use KLAX (with the proviso above) or FHMC1 from a MADIS layer. LA colleagues can chime in with additional local flavor, but I wanted to flag this for everyone so you aren’t caught off-guard.

I can't get this quote from The 1-Page Marketing Plan book out of my head, so simple and powerful....."If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying “Circus Coming to the Showground Saturday,” that’s advertising. If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town, that’s promotion. If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed and the local newspaper writes a story about it, that’s publicity. And if you get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s public relations. If the town’s citizens go to the circus, you show them the many entertainment booths, explain how much fun they’ll have spending money at the booths, answer their questions, and ultimately, they spend a lot at the circus, that’s sales. And if you planned the whole thing, that’s marketing."

Sports media is transforming before our very eyes. Last week saw the first round of the NFL draft, and with it, Pat McAfee's 5th Annual Draft Spectacular live streamed on YouTube. Pat drew 2.2 million viewers to his show, peaking at 322k concurrent viewers. The official NFL YouTube stream drew 888k viewers, peaking at around 30k concurrent (h/t Reed Duchscher for the stats) The comment sentiment gives you an insight into then reasons why: - “This was the most entertaining draft coverage I've ever seen in my 30+ years of religiously watching the NFL draft” - “Usually the NFL draft coverage is like watching paint dry til your team picks, but I was absolutely fascinated by every minute of this broadcast” - “This show was soooooooo much better than the actual draft!” Pat and the team craft an experience that is truly optimised for social and engagement. And there is clearly a huge audience who value a product totally different from what they can watch on TV. Personalised, dynamic, fun. The official NFL was something you could see on TV. It looked like an afterthought. With an average of 12m viewers on TV, it’s clear this still dominates eyeballs for the draft, but alternative sister live programming will eat away at this market share over the next 5 years. And this movement will affect EVERY SINGLE SPORT. Rights-holders and broadcasters will do well to try and ensure these are associated products, vs produced independently. Pay attention.
