Today on #PatientsFirst Friday, we kick off #MelanomaAwarenessMonth with one of the most well-known, well-loved patient advocates across our community, Medidata Solutions Patient Engagement Program Manager and Stage IV melanoma survivor T.J. Sharpe. 👉What T.J. wants you to know: "Melanoma is exponential. You have an exponentially greater chance of getting melanoma by getting sunburned, using tanning beds, or foregoing sun protection (sunscreen, long sleeves, hat) on a consistent basis. You also have an exponentially greater chance of surviving melanoma if it is caught early. This means seeing a dermatologist regularly and performing self-checks on your skin to look for atypical moles - the “ABCDE” of melanoma detection is Asymmetry, irregular Border, varying Color, Diameter greater than 6mm (the width of a pencil), or an Evolving mole that changes over time." 👉What makes a great advocacy/industry partnership? "Melanoma research has been at the forefront of immunotherapy for a decade. Given the significant differences between traditional cancer treatments and immunotherapies, the engagement of patient advocates to impact trial design was critical to early adoption for both patient communities and the physicians who were adjusting to a completely different way of treating cancer. This affected not just melanoma patients and trials, but set the trajectory for how immunotherapy trials would run for dozens of different cancer types and, ultimately, exponentially positively impacted cancer patients worldwide." I highly recommend this series to help providers understand the shifts to succeed with value-based care. This episode of the Business of Primary Care emphasized the critical need for a culture shift - a change in mindset. To succeed, organizations need to care much more about what the patient is doing outside of the visit. This requires lower-level staff to proactively reach out to patients to influence their behavior. A digital communication platform is critical to scaling this change in a way that also contributes to staff and patient satisfaction. https://lnkd.in/gCQmae-E

Most never fully appreciate the impact of "stretch" coverage with a leadership vacancy. As a CNO, either I covered the gap, or one of my talented leaders covered the gap. Either way, the vacancy led to disruption within the organization. The clinical dashboard is a key aspect to ensure strong patient care and streamlined operations for providers. Not only is the data important, but the insights are what really makes the difference for both parties. Something to consider for #vbc: The average Medicare beneficiary sees two specialists, and 30% of beneficiaries see five or more(!). Managing VBC contracts with multiple providers and overlapping episodes can be complex (think a pregnant woman with diabetes, a diabetic/CHF patient undergoing hip replacement). Some helpful ideas in the blog here (e.g. the importance of provider transparency), but of course, it's all about the specifics of your situation.

Another insightful consumer healthcare study from Rob Klein, MA Advertising and Klein & Partners: 2024 National Consumer Insights Study. Interesting takeaway: While 87% report having a primary care provider (PCP), half (50%) of those have been with their PCP for less than five years. This suggests both a high level of churn and potential lack of continuity in care.
