5th U.S. State to pass EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) legislation. The shared responsibility model calls for producers to pay half of recycling costs starting in 2029 and ramp up their share of costs incrementally. By 2031, producers will pay at least 90%. Producers include brands, packaging manufacturers or distributors, depending on the scenario.

The CMI Can Manufacturers Institute and the HCPA Household & Commercial Products Association, with the support of industry sponsors, launched the Aerosol Recycling Initiative in May 2022. This week the Executive Summary was released ahead of the a white paper that will be released in May 2024, sharing the Initiative's findings and future plans. One component of the work, hosted by Recycle Aerosol, LLC , gathered and analyzed the actual contents of over 900 post-consumer aerosol cans from selected MRFs, bringing previously lacking information forward. Data from the Aerosol Recycling Initiative and elsewhere will help drive decisions to achieve more aerosol recycling, safely and sustainably.  Simply stated, more (aerosol) recycling begets better recycling, which begets more recycling. https://lnkd.in/ec5EBm8G

In celebration of #EarthDay, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $7B in #SolarForAll grants set to unlock affordable, resilient, clean #solar power for 900,000+ low-income & disadvantaged households nationwide. Very interesting read on the recycling industry. Typical with most industries, recycling is no different in that the stories we see in the news are spun from data. Myles Cohen uses his vast experience in this arena to bring forward the actual data in an effort to shed light on that which can be improved. Thanks for bringing this forward, Myles!

Companies must take action on implementing more sustainable packaging. In my latest blog post for Pure Strategies, Inc., I explain the good news — we now have more solutions available, and the path is also clearer. But how can success actually be achieved? Companies should complete and maintain a packaging inventory, develop a strategy aligning with regulations and material issues, build capacity with training and supplier engagement, and support collaborative efforts and public policy. While 2025 targets such as those from the US Plastics Pact and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation will sunset soon, progress on sustainable packaging has all the signs of accelerating in the coming years. Laws in the U.S. are pointing to clear incentives for making progress, the U.S. EPA national strategy is expected soon, and global alignment through the legally binding Global Treaty on Plastic Pollution is expected in 2025 — all pointing to a common path of more responsible and circular packaging.
