Someone asked me how to move from SW to HW / robotics as a kickass builder excited to jump in. Love it! My response: robotics needs more great SW leaders who treat HW like a commodity, figure out a huge market need / GTM path, then pull in a team to unlock that.  With a SW mindset and SW architecture thinking. A lot of MechEs in love with their tech and the HW.  The HW is commodity - hard but commodity - and SW is where the interesting stuff is.  Simpler is better.  Most important is problem selection.  That is where you make / break the company and idea. And yes - there is HW innovation to be had - and I love folks doing that and doing it well. But there are far, far more opportunities for automation and problem solving with huge value creation now, with basically commodity OTS HW and SW. Choose problem, assemble solution, kick butt.

Valuations are starting to (only slightly) be in check. Investors looking for revenue, quality of revenue, margins, and repeatable GTM. This has the best founders focused on what matters, and reaching out to their Boards and advisors for real advice and guidance. Good stuff.

On the lawyer's side, attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants spend an average of 7.4 hours per week on unnecessary updates, redundant communication, and activities that aren't directly contributing towards getting a client's case solved. Manny and the team at Hona are working to change all of that. Hona delivers a tightly-integrated communications platform to help facilitate better communication between law firms and their clients. During legal proceedings, client communications tend to be a large resource-stressor for law firms. Clients will frequently call firms for case updates, legal explanations, or general administrative questions that tend to eat away at firm resources without providing any additional progress toward case resolution. A post from Rob at Balderton Capital pointed me at this piece from TechCrunch, and it perfectly aligns with what I've seen in the market: When things (aka: building businesses) are getting harder, founders seem to be more aware of how to structure ownership within their team. I've recently seen a few transactions where mostly experienced founders insist on longer vesting schedules for them and their team (👋🏻 Mario from Enpal revealing this week the whole company runs on 7y vesting schedules). Avoiding dead capital on the cap table is one of the key priorities we try to make founders aware of when raising rounds - be cautious with part-time, non-operative 'co-initiators', professors, accelerators or angels that don't add much value beyond the very initial stages, or co-founders that decide to move on. Enforcing strong (read: long) vesting mechanisms including cliffs (no need to stick to the 1y cliff market standard either) can be a simple mechanism to align interests for the long-term.

A topic that comes up often with companies we work with is how they think about the (Return on Investment) ROI of group travel for offsites and retreats. You san RSVP here: https://lu.ma/kstmwma6 Before considering the ROI, we should consider the investment itself. 1. Prior to COVID, companies paid for rent (duh). Many companies paid $1.5-2.5K+ per employee per month per rent - Companies didn’t have a choice on whether or not to pay for rent - A right of passage for startups used to be raising a seed round, and taking out an expensive lease - In cities like SF and NY, rent is expensive: $80-100 per sq ft. - Based on avg. sq ft per employee, and other expenses like snacks, security, etc. spend on rent adds up! 2. With distributed work, companies have to spend less on rent (sometimes a LOT less) - Some remote companies are spending nothing or very little on rent - Even for in-person companies, because employees aren’t coming in every day the sq footage needs are down - The price of commercial real estate has also fallen considerably - For example, all we spend on rent at Marco for a few WeWork subscriptions for certain team members 3. Companies are now spending more on T&E (offsites and onsites) - Spend on rent is lower, but spending on T&E has gone up - More employees are distributed, but the need for in-person connection hasn’t gone away - Many companies are now investing in gatherings 2-4x per year - On the whole, companies should be saving money between rent and T&E 4. With much lower spending on rent, and higher spending on group travel, on the whole companies should be saving a LOT I’ll break this math down, and show how we’ve seen companies measure the impact of gatherings like offsites tomorrow! #employeeexperience #offsites #futureofwork

Many people underestimate the impact of out-of-home (OOH) advertising, especially at the early stage. I’ve seen time and time again how it can be done well. I was reminded of this last week when Canvas Ventures hosted a panel discussion with GTM leaders. Euphonia X. (Brex, Ashby) shared why billboards worked especially well for Brex, when she was joined as the second marketer at the Series B, and why she’s trying it again now at Ashby. In this clip, Euphonia shares how you can figure out if your audience is properly concentrated to ensure effective reach, and how to boost engagement and think about measurement by incorporating a LinkedIn strategy. "I recently did a little bit of testing, kind of like a single billboard situation on the 101. We were able to talk to some pretty crazy big companies that we would otherwise not be able to. Something unique about a billboard is that it is a physical thing. It gives people a feeling that you are trustworthy. So whenever you buy billboards, try to buy premium placement before you do bus stops." Hey Siri “Why do companies take on venture debt” “Hmm good question. As a complement to equity financing, venture debt provides growth capital to extend the cash runway of a startup company to achieve the next milestone while minimizing equity dilution for both employees and investors.” Surprisingly this answer is spot on. With the equity markets tightening, I have seen a lot of venture debt activity occurring. Venture debt can be your best friend or worst enemy depending on how it’s utilized. In my opinion, if the venture debt provides enough additional runway to hit key milestones that would allow for a much higher valuation / more attractive investment, it can be a great tool. While the interest rate can be in the upper teens, the equity return on a high growth company should exceed this hurdle rate. On the flip side, if venture debt is utilized solely because equity isn’t available, one can risk losing their entire business upon a default. This is fascinating. My two portfolio companies on the fastest path to Series A have kept the leanest teams. Both of them are lingering around cash flow positive on a monthly basis. One is growing gangbusters, one is growing nicely. Good data below to show that these activities are being rewarded. We're still in cockroach times. Also fwiw, I'm constantly amazed by and learning from Peter Walker. If you're interested in the data of venture funding (AND IF YOU'RE A FOUNDER, YOU SHOULD BE), then follow Peter.

One awesome thing about our work at Groops is that the organizations who seek us out are the ones who care deeply about their people. Summer Friday is one of those companies. Culture is built into their core values and shapes everything they do. Every decision they make is grounded in how it impacts the human doing the work. I know because they have Groops for their entire company and I also lead their executive Groop. We have been with them for over a year now. We bring experts in organizational psychology to meet with their teams on a regular basis, teach core content in high cohesion / high performing teams, and help them have regular, honest conversations about what is working and what they want to improve. We provide ongoing insight reports with recommendations so everyone stays in communication. So, we end up knowing our partners well. They invited us to lead a full day (virtual) retreat last week where everyone took a personality assessment and we spent the day discussing how team makeup impacts their performance, how engaged they feel, and the direction of the organization. This is particularly important for them as they are a virtual company and clear communication and exploration and articulation of team functioning are mission critical. There are two main things we did to give ourselves more runway with Harlow while bootstrapping the business: 1. Cut costs so that we operate at break-even, which extends our business runway infinitely to give us more time to do focused tests to figure out PMF and which growth channels will work for us. 2. Brought on consulting clients so we could make money, which extends our personal runway infinitely by allowing us to feel more safe and comfortable while building. How are my other bootstrapped founders making it work?

Secondaries are becoming a super attractive asset class. Just this month, StepStone announced a new $3B+ fund dedicated to secondaries. Late-stage private companies are still trading at a discount relative to their 2021-2022 highs. But the venture capital advisor exemption requires firms to keep their secondary positions less than 20% of total investments. I think this will encourage fund managers to get creative with registration/legal structures in order to unlock greater exposure to secondaries as attractive deals come through. https://lnkd.in/e_3_xitM
