As a health writer and editor, one of my favorite things to do is debunk misinformation. When I saw a report circulating a couple of weeks ago claiming that some of the most popular packaged gluten-free foods contained high levels of glyphosate, a common pesticide, as well as more than 20 ppm of gluten (the threshold someone with celiac can safely consume), my spidey senses instantly started tingling. I’m always skeptical when I see sensational, clickbaity information like this, and after reading the report, I had a few big questions: How were these products tested? Is glyphosate in food actually dangerous? And what does glyphosate have to do with gluten? In my newsletter this week, I do a deep dive into this report, breaking down why the information presented was bogus. What I uncovered about the report was red flag after red flag. This is a good reminder to always do your due diligence and evaluate sources when presented with health information—especially when you hear something that sounds really alarming. We love the unflavored collagen peptide formula we created for Walmart. The COGS are solid and it still has a better formula than our competitors We really like how it turned out, so now we’re going to make it even better. What’s even better is that we can directly ask our amazing community on how to do just that. It’s time to make it flavored. Each of us (me, Ron, and Ash) picked 3 or 4 flavors and we sent out a poll asking our Obvi Facebook community. The three of us all have different palates that will all resonate differently with the community, so they choose from a variety of flavors. Because our community is so active, willing to participate, and actually care about these polls, We already have these results after tossing this up late last night. We'll probably let this run for another day. Instant feedback. We know exactly what our customers want, so we'll probably pick the top three to start. We're going to buy a limited run of these as drops and then see which flavor actually performs the best. We got pretty strong responses here. Even the flavors on the “bottom” seem like there's enough interest in them for smaller limited drops. Some really encouraging stuff happening here from the start. We're also sending out a poll similar to this for our New Burn powders (a slightly different format) Some cool innovation coming soon.

Amazon has announced NEW dietary supplement testing requirements and we’ve had a ton of questions about how, when, where, and even why. Despite publishing the requirements, running a full webinar, and even leaders in the space like Marc Bruggemann sharing their perspectives, brands/sellers still reported confusion so we sat down with the team behind the policy to clarify. Can your current testing be used? When will brands receive their due dates for testing? Why does NSF ANSI 173 take care of testing instead of similar certifications? We answer all of these in this video. We add a little bit of industry commentary/feedback. We do see the value in using large labs so the load can likely be handled and you can trust the testing, but we’d like to see paths so that smaller labs like Alkemist Labs can be on the primary list. It’s important to note that Amazon stepping up its safety requirements and adding some intra-industry regulation is something we support. While it is a MARKETPLACE and not a RETAILER, a large amount of our industry relies on the platform for revenue, and there are many taking advantage of the low barrier to entry. With consumers who are unaware of signs of adulteration, counterfeiting, and other nefarious deeds, I definitely support increased testing requirements. It’s also worth noting that Amazon will be publishing a FAQ with questions from the webinar, and looks to increase their webinars to have more touch points with the industry. PricePlow Mike Roberto

Don't forget, there's a meeting on Monday the 17th at 2pm to discuss the FSA's response to the escalated complaint against their handling of novel foods for CBD products. It really is time for action, but of course, that depends on you. I have the evidence to show that they're quite happy to create a cartel market, which means that at the conclusion of their process, if your name's not on the list, you ain't getting in! I know, bad English, but at the same time, it's not as bad as what the FSA has put the industry through over the lifetime of novel foods. If you've received an email from me regarding the meeting, don't forget, I need you to reply to say you're available. Invites to the meeting will go out at midday on Monday. You could say I have, but then one man doesn't make an industry... think about that for a second.

Is anyone out there trying to run a cannabis business like Patagonia? Patagonia’s founder, Yvon Chouinard often said: “We're running Patagonia as if it's going to be here 100 years from now, but that doesn't mean we have 100 years to get there.” I think most of my colleagues would say it’s impossible to build a cannabis business for anything other than the next 1-5 years… even the ones who aren’t worried about making a profit during that period. While I would agree that the mix of regulatory uncertainty and yet-to-be-defined consumer behavior necessitates building for agility over fortitude, (more on this idea specifically tomorrow), Patagonia has woven this idea into the fabric of their business and their products in a way unlike any other company. We all should take note of the core concepts that drive their business forward with ‘100-year ethos’: Long-term Vision: Make decisions with a long-term view, prioritizing sustainability and ethics over short-term profits.
