Cato Networks' Q1 2024 SASE Threat Report reveals major security problems in business networks... The War has changed the rules of cybersecurity Pavlo Golitsyn, the CIO at Ukrtelecom, provides tips on how to guard businesses against cybercrime to NV.ua   Enterprise cyber defense works by ensuring that the cost of bypassing protection exceeds the value of the information being secured. The Big War changed the rules. Information that wasn`t needed before, had no value, has now become quite interesting. For example, before a full-scale invasion, no one needed access to some coffee shop network. However, now Russian hackers can break into such places only in order to prevent them from providing service. This is a trifle in terms of the data value, but for publicity, for economic and moral harm the cybercriminals can do that. For example, until February 2022, there were no DDoS attacks on Ukrtelecom for several years. Such companies were not interesting; no one tried to "put down" the sites. Now, when we switch protection to a simpler mode for 5 minutes during routine maintenance, malicious activity immediately appears there.   In fact, cyber defense in the enterprise is like a shield and a sword. On the one hand, attackers pick up a "sword" that can break through the "shield." On the other hand, business takes such a "shield" so that it can withstand the blow of the "sword". This is a constant process of confrontation. The more valuable the company's data is the more expensive hackers will hunt the enterprise with high-priced tools to make a complex cyberattack. The more sophisticated and expensive resources are spent on such hunting, the more effort and investment it takes to protect yourself. This is a constant, endless game. It boils down to making the cost of bypassing the protection more expensive than the value of the protected information. This is the basic logic of enterprise cybersecurity.   How to protect yourself from cybercriminals?
There is one main tip for business - to have a team of professionals. There are certain best practices and cases, but they do not work without the experienced specialists. Execution of some items in such cases costs millions of dollars. Professionals are needed to properly invest money and get the maximum effect from these investments. Why the business protection costs millions of dollars and protection of an ordinary user is tens of hryvnias? The difference in the data value. Who is interested in the photo or story of an ordinary user? Amateur crooks are only. But if we are talking, for example, about a customer database with their personal data of a large company, where there may be millions of people, this is a completely different story. Such information can be used in different ways, and has a certain value in the market. #cybersecurity
