Inflation Alarm Bells Ring Loud as Fed Maintains Restrictive Stance! At the 2024 Agricultural Commodity Futures Conference, Kansas City Federal Reserve President Jeff Schmid highlighted the urgent need for continued restrictive monetary policy, citing persistent inflation above the 2% target and a robust job market. As we progress through 2024, inflation started at an alarmingly high pace, prompting the Federal Reserve to adopt a cautious approach. Despite expectations of interest rate cuts, Schmid indicated that these might be delayed and less aggressive than anticipated, underscoring the importance of patience and the need for clear and convincing evidence that inflation is on a sustainable downward trajectory. From an economic perspective, particularly concerning temporary staffing and labor markets, these developments carry significant implications. A strong job market, while beneficial, indicates a potential imbalance that could sustain higher inflation levels. This scenario suggests a challenging environment for the temporary staffing industry, which thrives on flexibility and cost efficiency. Companies might face higher operational costs and reduced demand for temporary workers as businesses tighten budgets in response to increased borrowing costs. Moreover, the Fed's ongoing efforts to reduce its balance sheet, which remains historically large, could influence market interest rates and liquidity conditions. For staffing agencies, this means navigating a landscape where financial planning and forecasting become more complex. Good news for organic and specialty growers, especially for farms in California, Arizona and Texas. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expanding crop insurance options for specialty and organic growers beginning with the 2025 crop year. USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) is expanding coverage options by allowing enterprise units by organic farming practice, adding enterprise unit eligibility for several crops, and making additional policy updates. Some of the changes include:    ◦   Expanding Enterprise Units (EU) to almonds, apples, avocado (California), citrus (Arizona, California, and Texas), figs, macadamia nuts, pears, prunes, and walnuts.    ◦   Allowing non-contiguous parcels of land that qualify for Optional Units (OU) to also qualify for EU.    ◦   Allowing EUs by organic farming practice for alfalfa seed, almonds, apples, avocado (California), cabbage, canola, citrus (Arizona, California and Texas), coarse grains, cotton, ELS cotton, dry beans, dry peas, figs, fresh market tomatoes, forage production, grass seed, macadamia nuts, millet, mint, mustard, pears, potatoes (northern, central, and southern), processing tomatoes, prunes, safflower, small grains, sunflower seed, and walnuts.    ◦   Expanding OUs by organic practice to all remaining crops where OUs are available, and the organic practice is insurable. Cedar/Scott County, Iowa Eastern Iowa has been able to get most of the crop in the ground between rain showers. Planting progress is roughly 90% on corn and 60%-70% on soybeans. Early planted corn emerged in 7-10 days thanks to warm temps and ample moisture. One thing to watch this spring is insect and disease pressure being higher than usual due to the mild winter. USDA reports can move crop markets, and also offer insight into farm profitability with just a few calculations. The USDA’s annual Acreage report was released today and showed a 1.6% increase in corn acres and a .5% decrease in soybean acres from previous planting intentions, nearly opposite of expectations. Additionally, corn and soybean futures prices had dropped 6% and 7% respectively since the March 28 Prospective Plantings report, for year-end delivery, prior to the report release. The resulting potential revenue decline of $7.3B is a significant amount and banks should be aware of the impact on ag loan portfolios. #fintech & #data for #ag #communitybanks and #farmers
