Hey all... JOB OPPORTUNITY !! mini story included_ 2 weeks ago I posted for this role and we made it through interviews in 1 week. I hate dangling 'speed' in front of people bc I know how frustrated people are (this market sucks!), but this truly was a special, refined process. ⚒ Took the brief > presented a stand-out candidate > interviewed over 5 business days > offer! 🙀 It was wild but in the best way! A dream for a great recruiting partnership. But also a > 🎢. And as things go, it wasn't the right timing for this particular candidate. That's okay! 🥁 That means the role is still open, and I gotta fill it. This client has been interviewing for a couple of months, and by now, knows exactly what they are looking for, and are ready to hire yesterday. So here is what we learned we really need from this most recent interview round: 🌟 🌟 🌟 Have you worked at a startup? Have you worked for a big company? You can't prevent it. But you can influence the conversation. Apply your UX expertise to your process to create a streamlined, and enhanced candidate experience. 💥 Here are the top 5 things I would tell my younger designer/illustrator self. I wouldn't change anything about my past because I wouldn't have learned any of it without the experience. Would love for anyone to add to my list, even if your advice isn't specifically for creatives. 1. Always pursue creative projects outside of work; this ironically prevents me from burnout. You may never get your creative “fix” completely fulfilled at your job, at least in my own experience. Picking and choosing the right freelance clients is also a good move and could make a great career when you’re ready. Oh, and make sure you have a contract, get % upfront, and be on the lookout for 🚩 I’ll do another post about this another time. 2. Design is not always glamorous, but beautiful design is simply communicating a message. In fact, I’d argue design isn’t art unless that is the intention of the design itself. Rather, art is one of the avenues you can use to communicate a message through design. 3. Design and illustration can also be subjective and should be; you’re communicating to a target market who have different values, beliefs, and needs. But the fundamentals are the solid ground. And good design principles are objective. Learn the rules and then know how to break them. 4. Function should be allowed to come before form in design [unless you’re going for an art piece, mentioned above]. If that bothers you, you can flip the script in illustration 😜 Study your audience. Sketch out your ideas; you’ll find inspiration in unexpected ways. 5. Think of yourself as a problem solver; clients love this. Branding and Brand Identity are not the same thing. Tune into Marty Neumeier TheFutur and Chris Do content/books. They explain this better that I can. I’ll leave you with this. 🔥 Create more than you consume. Listen more than you speak. Give more than you take. Plant more than you destroy. Last night, I was doing my nightly LinkedIn scroll, and to my absolute *horror*, I read a negative post about recruiters that hire freelancers that I was guilty of. The post said that it’s a disgusting and lazy habit to post on LinkedIn asking for freelancers for a project "in 15 mins" (lol 🆘) and basically creating a swarm of interested freelancers to choose from. Eeeeek 😵💫 The only reason I even started making connections on this platform was due to posting that I’m searching for freelancers on LinkedIn (and I won't even lie to you, most of my posts probably said I need them for a project ASAP 😬). I tend to post ✨niche✨ roles so that I can manage responses, but I have made those types of posts nonetheless. …..aaaaand I think I’m done forever 😅 When I started posting last year (my first year recruiting), I probably had around 300 connections or so. The comments and messages I got back were just enough to find some good candidates. It felt exciting!! Over time, I found it more difficult to keep up with responses when I made a post, but I was just pumped to be making connections. I downloaded TextExpander to become more efficient. I felt like I was in the best little groove!! Last month (March 2024), I made a personal post about what I learned during my first year recruiting freelancers. My DMs have been going wild ever since. I’m now experiencing what it feels like to not be able to keep up with messages. I had a few OOO days and I’m so behind 🫠 I know there are a lot of incredible candidates in my DMs that I haven't gotten back to as quickly as I want to (and I genuinely want to!!!). I need candidates ASAP quite often…it’s the name of the game. But posting that I need a freelancer ASAP when I possibly have the perfect candidate in my DMs would feel gross right now. So I will not be doing that anymore 😌 My network is larger now, so being able to respond to everyone interested isn’t feasible anymore. Thoughtful connections will always win the freelance race…I've learned that firsthand. Now excuse me while I focus on making genuine connections & slowly but surely chip away at these DMs 🤩 Can't wait to connect!! My industry is really struggling right now. Freelancers, studios, agencies, design companies in general are having a hard time finding work and retaining clients resulting in mass lay-offs and a lack of need for people like me. I've really been trying to prioritize Linkedin over other social media for job searching but honestly, it doesn't seem to be working. Instagram is where designers go to connect with other designers but Linkedin is where designers go to connect with people who hire designers. At least that's what I thought.... After a solid year prioritizing Linkedin, filling out hundreds of job applications, friend requests left unanswered, inquiries to studios/agencies that I admire left ignored, I just don't think I'm going to get an interview by uploading my resume into what seems like outer space, hoping it gets seen by the right person. Interviewing has never been the hard part, it's getting somebody to care enough to accept that initial connection. So it's time to pivot to a new approach... For the next month, I'm not applying anywhere. I really want to focus on those genuine connections and referrals from people already in my network who appreciate my work or have worked with me in the past. People who know first hand what kind of designer I am and how much value I can bring to a project. SO with that said, my network, I turn to you. If you know somebody, either from a past job, current job or personal relationship, and you think it might be beneficial for me to connect with them (creative directors, hiring managers, studio/agency owners etc.) I would love to introduce myself on a video call for a "virtual coffee" and talk about how I might be able to help them. Even a "Charlie meet X, X meet Charlie" type email works and makes it one step easier to meet other creatives. Any connection you are willing to make helps and I appreciate all of your support.
