  • Transparent Display Device

    Issued US 20140098085

This document describes techniques and apparatuses for implementing a transparent display device. A transparent display device includes a transparent or translucent screen to render images on the screen, and to render virtual objects that appear to be in a three-dimensional (3D) space behind the screen. The transparent display device also includes a hand tracker to sense movement of a user's hands to interact with one or more of the virtual objects, and to generate 3D-input based on the…

The transparent display device also includes a hand tracker to sense movement of a user's hands to interact with one or more of the virtual objects, and to generate 3D-input based on the movement. The transparent or translucent screen enables the user to see the user's hands behind the screen as the user's hands interact with the one or more virtual objects. The transparent display device is controlled to modify the rendering of the images on the screen or the virtual objects behind the screen based on the 3D-input.

  • Collapsible input device

    Issued US US 20120206419 A1

In exemplary implementations of this invention, a handheld, collapsible input device (CID) may be employed by a user to input and manipulate 3D information. The CID telescopes in length. As a user presses the CID against a display screen, the physical length of the CID shortens, and the display screen displays a virtual end of the CID that appears to project through the screen into the virtual 3D space behind the screen. The total apparent length of the CID, comprised of a physical portion and…

The total apparent length of the CID, comprised of a physical portion and a virtual portion, remains the same (after taking into account foreshortening). Thus, the user experience is that, as the user holds the physical CID and pushes it against the display screen, the end of the CID appears to be pushed through the display screen into the virtual 3D space beyond it. The CID housing may include a push button for user input.

  • SpaceTop

SpaceTop is a technological and design solution to fuse 2D and spatial 3D interactions in a single desktop workspace. It extends the traditional desktop interface with interaction technology and visualization techniques that enable seamless transitions between 2D and 3D manipulations. SpaceTop allows users to type, click, draw in 2D, and directly manipulate interface elements that float in the 3D space above the keyboard. It makes it possible to easily switch from one modality to another, or to…

It makes it possible to easily switch from one modality to another, or to simultaneously use two modalities with different hands. We introduce hardware and software configurations for co-locating these various interaction modalities in a unified workspace using depth cameras and a transparent display. We describe new interaction and visualization techniques that allow users to interact with 2D elements floating in 3D space and present the results from a preliminary user study that indicates the benefit of such hybrid workspaces.

  • ZeroN, levitated interaction element

ZeroN is a new physical/digital interaction element that can be levitated and moved freely by computer in a three dimensional space. Both the computer and people can move the ZeroN simultaneously. In doing so, people and computers can physically interact with one another in 3D space. Users are invited to place or move the ZeroN just as they can place any other objects on surfaces. Once levitated, ZeroN's behavior can be digitally programmed. For example, users can place the sun above physical…
