Future Engineers hosts online innovation challenges for K-12 students. In 2014, Future Engineers launched its inaugural 3D printing in space challenge, sponsored by the ASME Foundation with technical assistance from NASA, which produced historic achievements including the first student-designed 3D print in space. Based on that success, and through the support of the U.S. Department of Education's SBIR Program, Future Engineers launched a multi-challenge platform in 2018 capable of hosting STEAM challenges of all kinds. All challenges are free for student/classroom participation.

Abstract: Urban gun violence in cities across the world is a serious issue for public safety agencies and disaster management organizations. This led us to the development of the EDNA drone, an aerial robotics solution designed to equip first responders in high-risk settings with lifesaving-edge tools for situational awareness and non-lethal conflict resolution. The EDNA is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that delivers the patent-pending “Predictive Probable Cause” technology. The EDNA drone is designed to provide automated real-time analysis to assist teams entering high-risk situations where gun violence may occur. By leveraging machine learning, biometric sensors, and advanced materials in the field and routing feedback to an intuitive augmented-reality interface, the EDNA will provide autonomous threat detection and bullet-stopping capabilities wherever those features are needed--to groups such as Police and Sheriff's Departments, Fire Departments, and EMT and emergency rescue teams. Data from the EDNA drone's sensors is fed to machine learning algorithms running on the drone in real-time. Through a neural network trained on past data, the EDNA is able to detect the presence and location of firearms and explosives, even through walls or other obstacles. Through the use of advanced metal foams and composite materials, the armored drone can even stop bullets-functionality which has obvious benefits for humanitarian deployment.

I update and maintain the disaster recovery procedures for Windows servers at Mastercard. This includes creating and assigning a team to perform tasks, as well as testing the system to make sure that it works. It also involves a fair share of nail-biting and pleading to the machine gods.

  • Printer Deployment System Administration & Build

    -

Worked to deploy a badge-based printing system to allow privatized print jobs to ensure confidentiality of all printed items. Originally, I was brought on to only verify that the servers associated with the project were built to satisfactory specifications. As time progressed, I stepped into the role of a project manager and technical lead, assisting the vendor with installs, updates, and configurations. I plan the rollout schedules for each location, and work with on-site contacts to relay…

  • PCI DSS Audit

    -

Shortly after being promoted to Systems Engineer at Mastercard, I handled my team's PCI DSS audit for Windows servers. I made sure that our documentation was up-to-date and that their procedures matched those described. I worked with other members of my team to analyze our servers and ensure they were compliant. We passed in August 2016. And we celebrated and cried.

  • Windows Server 2003 Migration

    -

Shortly after starting my Engineering Apprenticeship at Mastercard, I picked up a project that involved migrating over 700 Windows servers off of a Windows 2003 Operating System to replacement servers running either Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 Operating Systems to maintain PCI compliancy (which I subsequently ended up working on, too, for my team). I spoke with and met various team members across the Mastercard IT infrastructure to coordinate this effort. I also collaborated with the…

I also collaborated with the business-related departments that owned the servers, helping them to obtain their replacement servers and ensure that they were operating properly before decommissioning their old counterparts. This is one reason why I keep my hair short, because a fair amount of it would be gone anyway after this!

  • Monitoring Database Build

    -

As a IT Help Desk Supervisor at Webster University, we were initially keeping track of the representative's progress using an elaborate and really long spreadsheet. I decided to create a database using Microsoft Access 2003 (later migrated to Access 2010) to record them. The database had the ability to enter new data records, print customized reports, and then email weekly reports to the representatives. It was password-protected and I housed on a network server shared drive so that all the…

  • Attendance Database Build

    -

I was a Project Specialist (van driver, facilitator, and all-around assistant) for an afterschool program for high schoolers. Part of my job was to keep track of student's attendance records and grades for each semester/quarter. The database we were using wasn't flexible enough to get the records we needed to submit to the funding government program, so I created one from scratch using Access. The database allowed us to customize our reports the way we wanted, as well as data entry and…

The database we were using wasn't flexible enough to get the records we needed to submit to the funding government program, so I created one from scratch using Access. I housed it on a shared drive, and gave front-end client interface access to those that wanted it.
