How can you build a thriving innovation ecosystem that supports your business goals?
One of the problems that I see when people create systems is that they don't create them to be flexible, in the onset. Especially when it comes to technological advancements, always create a system that can easily be replaced, one piece at a time. That way, a company can save on costs over the long run. Buying the newest and latest item off the shelf can get enticing, but robust systems should be fractional.

How can you determine if a private cloud is cost-effective for your company?
One aspect of cloud migration that I love is for systems and data that isn't sensitive and needs access from various locations! Back in the day when you could only get remote access to your computer profile, that was maybe considered the top of off-site access. Now having the experience of working on both on-prem and virtual servers and systems, I find that for single-use and non-PII info, cloud is definitely superior, often taking up less space and scaling as needed (think of those email lists or growing CSM portals). On-prem (on premises) systems reign supreme for data that needs to be regulated and protected (i.e. payment info, PII, etc.). In the end, it's a personal choice, as security protocols have increased in both realms.

Future Engineers hosts online innovation challenges for K-12 students. In 2014, Future Engineers launched its inaugural 3D printing in space challenge, sponsored by the ASME Foundation with technical assistance from NASA, which produced historic achievements including the first student-designed 3D print in space. Based on that success, and through the support of the U.S. Department of Education's SBIR Program, Future Engineers launched a multi-challenge platform in 2018 capable of hosting STEAM challenges of all kinds. All challenges are free for student/classroom participation.

The EDNA Public Safety Drone: Bullet-Stopping Lifesaving

Abstract: Urban gun violence in cities across the world is a serious issue for public safety agencies and disaster management organizations. This led us to the development of the EDNA drone, an aerial robotics solution designed to equip first responders in high-risk settings with lifesaving-edge tools for situational awareness and non-lethal conflict resolution. The EDNA is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that delivers the patent-pending “Predictive Probable Cause” technology. The EDNA drone is designed to provide automated real-time analysis to assist teams entering high-risk situations where gun violence may occur. By leveraging machine learning, biometric sensors, and advanced materials in the field and routing feedback to an intuitive augmented-reality interface, the EDNA will provide autonomous threat detection and bullet-stopping capabilities wherever those features are needed--to groups such as Police and Sheriff's Departments, Fire Departments, and EMT and emergency rescue teams. Data from the EDNA drone's sensors is fed to machine learning algorithms running on the drone in real-time. Through a neural network trained on past data, the EDNA is able to detect the presence and location of firearms and explosives, even through walls or other obstacles. Through the use of advanced metal foams and composite materials, the armored drone can even stop bullets-functionality which has obvious benefits for humanitarian deployment.

Product Testing - Samsung Pay
-
Before it launched, I got an opportunity to test out Samsung Pay. I found it super convenient and still use it to this day as my primary mobile pay app! People still wonder what type of magic I use to make my cell phone pay for groceries. I smile and say that I'm from the future.

Windows Server 2003 Migration
-
Shortly after starting my Engineering Apprenticeship at Mastercard, I picked up a project that involved migrating over 700 Windows servers off of a Windows 2003 Operating System to replacement servers running either Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 Operating Systems to maintain PCI compliancy (which I subsequently ended up working on, too, for my team). I spoke with and met various team members across the Mastercard IT infrastructure to coordinate this effort. I also collaborated with the…

I spoke with and met various team members across the Mastercard IT infrastructure to coordinate this effort. I also collaborated with the business-related departments that owned the servers, helping them to obtain their replacement servers and ensure that they were operating properly before decommissioning their old counterparts. This is one reason why I keep my hair short, because a fair amount of it would be gone anyway after this!

Monitoring Database Build
-
As a IT Help Desk Supervisor at Webster University, we were initially keeping track of the representative's progress using an elaborate and really long spreadsheet. I decided to create a database using Microsoft Access 2003 (later migrated to Access 2010) to record them. The database had the ability to enter new data records, print customized reports, and then email weekly reports to the representatives. It was password-protected and I housed on a network server shared drive so that all the…

Attendance Database Build
-
I was a Project Specialist (van driver, facilitator, and all-around assistant) for an afterschool program for high schoolers. Part of my job was to keep track of student's attendance records and grades for each semester/quarter. The database we were using wasn't flexible enough to get the records we needed to submit to the funding government program, so I created one from scratch using Access. The database allowed us to customize our reports the way we wanted, as well as data entry and…

The database we were using wasn't flexible enough to get the records we needed to submit to the funding government program, so I created one from scratch using Access. The database allowed us to customize our reports the way we wanted, as well as data entry and regular queries that we used to keep track of the day-to-day progress for each student. I housed it on a shared drive, and gave front-end client interface access to those that wanted it.
