Works in progress: Projects pave way for jobs- According to United States Census data, Butler County has gained an average of 7,000 residents every five years since 1970, rounding out to a total 197,300 in 2022. While this growth brings jobs to the county, it also brings a need for updated infrastructure through state, local and private efforts. The Balls Bend and Three Degree Road projects on Route 228 aim to help support that growth, while also making the roughly 9-mile stretch of highway connecting Routes 8 and 19 much safer for the roughly 5.3 million vehicles that travel it each year, according to state Department of Transportation spokesperson Christina Gibbs. https://lnkd.in/eR5DKjV7

I chose Civil Engineering since I wanted to be the one on the job site that knew what was going to be built. Now I enjoy seeing my work get constructed and solve real world problems. I enjoy transportation engineering since it has a community-focused impact of reducing congestion, improving drive times, and making roadways safer and smoother to travel.” #WhyWednesday What is your all-time favorite TV show or movie? “Any of the Bond movies.” This or that: Intersection, roundabout, or a different kind of innovative intersection? “It really depends on the situation and community you are located in. The traffic volumes may lend towards one type of intersection. Our new Track-1, CLIMBS, consists of seven different projects that cohesively improve climate resilience in Kentucky. Project 5 of 7 of CLIMBS will work to mitigate landslide impacts through stronger monitoring and modeling of the Kentucky River Area including the counties of Breathitt, Knott, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Owsley, Perry, and Wolfe. This project will assimilate data from a sparse sensor network using satellites to develop comprehensive physical models of hillslope response behavior relative to climate forcings. Notably, no physical models of hillslope response to climate forcings exists for Eastern Kentucky. Assimilated meteorological, hydrologic, and hillslope displacement data from these areas will allow CLIMBS researchers to better forecast landslides and allow researchers to assess risks in Appalachia and, eventually, in other parts of the world. Major players in Project 5 are University of Kentucky's Co-PI L. Sebastian Bryson, Ph.D., P.E., BC. GE, F.ASCE, and Sarah Johnson, and Kentucky Geological Survey's Matt Crawford. This project will also hire two new faculty at UK, which will help build Kentucky's research capacity in these areas for years to come. A reliable and safe water supply is fundamental to public health and community well-being. A proficient and knowledgeable workforce is crucial in navigating the complex landscape of water treatment, distribution, and infrastructure maintenance. The importance of a well-trained workforce cannot be overstated. That is why Kansas Municipal Utilities (KMU) is excited to offer the KMU Water Distribution Academy – Novice. Over five months, this comprehensive five-session course is designed to immerse novice water distribution system operators in essential knowledge. The course not only equips attendees with practical insights to navigate real-world challenges in the field but also serves as an exam prep, with a KWEA/WPI Collections exam offered at the end of the 5th session of the academy. The curriculum draws on authoritative insights from Water Professionals International (WPI) and the American Water Works Association (AWWA). Attending individuals will be enrolling for the entire five-session course. Each session is from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM at Kansas City BPU's Nearman Water Treatment Plant in Kansas City. Twenty hours of KDHE and KWEA/WPI water operator certification credit for individuals completing the academy track. The following Ohio Department of Transportation projects are anticipated to affect highways in Athens County during the week of July 8-12. Outlined work is weather permitting. Click on each route to see its location at OHGO.com. Village of Chauncey Sanitary Sewer Project — A sanitary sewer project is taking place in the Village of Chauncey. State Route 13 is closed from State Route 682 to West Bailey Road. The detour is State Route 682 to US 33 west to State Route 78 to State Route 685 to State Route 13. Estimated completion date is July 11. US 50/Washington Road signal replacement/turn lane installation — A signal replacement and turn lane installation project is taking place at U.S. 50/Washington Road. Estimated completion date is Nov. 1. US 50/East State Street resurfacing — A resurfacing project is taking place on U.S. 50 between Della Drive and River Road. Lane closures are place in both directions. The estimated completion date is Aug. 15.

Over the past few decades, Michigan has faced an increase in unpredictable storm events. Unfortunately, our existing stormwater infrastructure is not built to handle the frequency and intensity of these storms, creating problems with water runoff and flooding. FLOW is working to develop a legislative solution to enable small and mid-sized communities in Michigan to legally establish stormwater utilities, and secure a reliable source of funding for this crucial infrastructure. Conway, SC has received $2m to fund the development of nearly 4m cubic feet of stormwater storage within the McKeithan Watershed. In addition to stormwater management, this project will create habitats and offer recreational facilities that allow residents to engage with nature and benefit from the outdoor space. The Fresh Coast Protection Partnership (FCPP) was launched to scale up green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) to meet Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD) 2035 goal of capturing the first half inch of rain, or 740 million gallons of water each time it rains. GSI can mitigate flooding, improve water quality, enhance green spaces, and promote sustainable water management practices. The FCPP is a community-based partnership between MMSD and CIS. The program has 18 projects, either completed or in development, that will collectively capture, treat, and store over 11 million gallons of stormwater. The FCPP can assist both private and public landowners in increasing the capacity of stormwater capture projects on their properties at no cost to the landowner and is actively seeking projects in municipalities within MMSD’s service area.
