Something every New Yorker loves to say: “if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.” Cool, we get it. You’re tough. But the real question is: do the same rules apply to policy reform? Because a new bill in the New York State Assembly is proposing to legalize psilocybin for any adult who obtains a permit. It’s kinda like a driver's license, but instead of commuting to work, you’re communing with spirit. The bill, sponsored by Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, would allow adults to legally grow, possess, use, and share psilocybin with (other permitted) friends. To score one of these passes, you'd just need to sit through a five-hour educational course and pass a health screening. FWIW, the measure lists several conditions that could theoretically be treated with psilocybin, but it also states eligibility would not be limited to those with a diagnosis. It’s not a full decriminalization campaign, like what passed in Colorado. (Get caught without a permit, and you could face a penalty.) It’s also not a facilitated services model, like what’s going on in Oregon. (Though NY lawmakers are working that angle, too.) It’s a secret third thing. Now let’s make it there, so we can have it everywhere.

Thank you Otta.com for inviting me to join the conversation "Turning Hiring Managers into DEI Champions". And for the incredible panel Emily Meiklejohn, Michael Blakley, and moderator Hung Lee. Key takeaway from the event: We've moved away from disconnecting interview training & hiring best practices from Inclusive hiring. They are one of the same. Hiring excellence is inclusive hiring. Some questions asked from the audience on resources we use on my team to help us stay inclusive, transparent, and striving towards hiring excellence: 👉🏽 Talent Market Diversity benchmarking data from Otta.com 👉🏽 Diversity Survey & Funnel Passthrough Rates through Ashby (ATS- All-in-One) 👉🏽 Framed our strategy around the HBRs "The Five Stages of DEI Maturity" - https://lnkd.in/gb8b5vef 👉🏽 Video Interviewing Tool, BrightHire to measure the effectiveness of our interview training and create development interruptions. I believe that protecting reproductive rights is one of the most important fights of our generation. And it might be the issue that defines the 2024 election. There’s so much panic around November, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s at stake. 1 in 3 women have already lost access to abortion – and if Trump and the Republicans succeed, far more restrictive laws are coming. We’re all tired of politics, but we can’t afford to sit on the sidelines. It’s time to get to work. From now until election day, Portal A will be partnering with Harrison Clark LLC on a campaign that uses content creators to reach young voters in swing states around the critical issue of reproductive freedom. In the next six months, #VoteRepro will be producing 100+ videos reaching millions of young voters that get to the heart of why this election really matters. If you want to support this project, here are three ways you can help: 1. DONATE. This work is funded entirely by individual donors. If you are looking for a place to put your money to work to defeat Trump and save democracy, please visit our Act Blue page: https://lnkd.in/gUcWeA67 2. FORWARD OUR JOB POSTING. We are looking for an amazing, dedicated talent producer to help us coordinate all our outreach and communications with creators. https://lnkd.in/gPDFrnyr 3. SHARE THIS POST to spread the word. I always hear "culture starts at the top." That's why I am headed to Justworks this morning to meet with fellow Founders for #FoundersCircle. A men's group for early-stage founders in NYC to form relationships IRL and work on strengthening the very self they found with. I have 20+ reasons for starting Founder Circle. Today I will share one: a thesis. We all know you need PMF, a GTM motion, talent, and maybe funding. To get these things, Founders need and, importantly, form (on the fly often) certain values and personality traits (i.e., the desire to make money with impact, grit). In my experience, often without reflection on what led to success, successes reinforce certain traits as "effective". Again, these traits drive the culture that drives the business. It's weird that currently, founders build the cultural backbone of the organization on the fly. Worse yet, this self-work often happens in isolation creating the feeling I call "lonely founder syndrome". My vision: Founders work on their values in a community that gets them. My bet: Founders who intentionally form their personal operating model for founding will succeed when otherwise they would not. If you're a Founder seeking a space to vent safely, refresh your passion and grit, and learn from others who face similar challenges (here focused on personal challenges, not sales advice), you are welcome to join us in 2 weeks on 6/14. URL to RSVP is in the comments.

NEW: Analysts think more M&A in mental health is inevitable. After 2021's funding highs, some startups have struggled to grow into massive valuations, and competition in behavioral health has only ramped up. Today's mental health market is a mixed bag: late-stage giants ramping up for public market debuts, early-stage startups grabbing funding for specialized care, and generalist midstage players weighing their options in between. These are the 13 startups analysts predicted could IPO, make acquisitions, or get bought in the next year. For Business Insider: https://lnkd.in/eNrBnpRz

How you know you’re moving from an overworked employee to an empowered CEO/founder You move from thinking → I need to know & do everything → To who can get this done for me You start looking and keeping your eyes open for people who deliver excellence and are better than you so you can bring them into your team. The other day I was in a meeting and I observed someone who I felt was exceptional at handling team mediation & conflict (shoutout to Gladys Ajogwu who is truly the best at corporate communications). Old me would probably think- I need to learn this skill so I can become excellent at this too. New me knew that I didn’t need to be excellent at the skill but instead had an amazing team member who was exceptional at the role. Because when it comes to your role as a scaling founder/CEO; It’s not about what you know it’s about having an amazing team + bonding them through culture + organized system and structure to make them thrive in their career. It’s not about doing more but buying back your time so that you can focus on what truly matters. That’s why at Social Media Connoisseur (SMC) our signature program is our FREEDOM PACKAGE that is focused on helping scaling founders/CEOs stand out & attract their dream clients without sacrificing their time and freedom. If you want to find out more DM or book a free discovery call today to chat more- https://lnkd.in/dzZbeXq3 🤎 What’s your thoughts 💭 on this? I would love to know. #sustainablebusiness #scalingfemalefounder #entrepreneurmindset

Looking back on my journey through Yale University's Master's program in Strategic Leadership and Management, I'm excited to share three game-changing lessons I've picked up along the way: Dream Big, Lead Bold: From day one, Yale instilled in me the power of visionary leadership. It's not just about managing the present, but painting a vivid picture of the future and rallying teams to make it a reality. Think big, lead boldly—that's the mantra! Roll with the Punches: In the fast-paced world of business, adaptability is everything. Yale taught me to thrive in uncertainty, embracing change and turning challenges into opportunities. From crisis simulations to real-world case studies, I've mastered the art of agile leadership. Lead with Integrity: At Yale, integrity isn't just a buzzword—it's a way of life. I've learned that true leadership isn't just about hitting targets; it's about doing so with integrity, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility. Grateful for the transformative experience at Yale, I'm fired up to put these lessons into action and make a real difference in the world. Let's make some waves! 🎓 💼✨ #YaleLeadership #DreamBig #LeadWithIntegrity"

Changing the narrative of talent development and performance enablement being a "nice to have" versus a "need to have" is not easy work, but it's no coincidence that some of the most successful organizations I work with have leaders who recognize the importance of investing in their people. Learning how to "speak the CEO language" is a fun learning opportunity -- it challenges you to put words to why these types of engagements make a difference in a way that will not only make your CEOs listen, but also take action 🚀 I can't think of better leaders to learn from than Priscila Bala, Jenny Podewils Roxanne Bras Petraeus, and Melanie Naranjo -- what a dream team 😍

On Monday April 8th I attended the "How to Stand Out at Work" Event hosted by Spark Women, an employee resource group for women at Hearst. 💖 Jessica Dodell -Feder, Executive Editor of HGTV Magazine took turns interviewing several leading ladies in the Hearst Network, each offering their nuggets of wisdom. Here are some of the main learnings I took away from the event... 👇 ❇ Tracking Compliments - Keep receipts when people compliment you on your work! Take screenshots and put them in a folder, you never know when these can come in handy. Whether it's building out a testimonial page on a personal website, sharing to LinkedIn, or sharing specific feedback with future employers, kind words can go a long way. Use them to your advantage! (Thanks Sarah from the S.F. Chronicle for this one! ✨ ) ❇ Assignment Post-Mortems - A "post-mortem" can be a positive experience, too 😎 Get into a habit of holding post-mortems with your team after assignments and projects are completed. Initiate them by suggesting it to your manager, if you are not yet in a position of leadership. Pose questions like, how did this assignment go, overall? What are any points for improvement? Where are places the I can improve, on the next assignment? And lastly - celebrate successes ! Celebrating wins, big and small helps us to reflect on our strengths, measure growth, & stay motivated. (Thanks Editor and Chief of Women's Health, Liz Baker Plosser for that one, and for posting me on your instagram story that day! I almost passed out. 🤩 ) ❇ Tracking Accomplishments - Similar to tracking compliments, but more related to action-items. Set specific goals and assign specific action items for yourself at the beginning of the year, communicate them to your manager, and hold yourself accountable to them. Set time-limits on them, and when the that 3 month benchmark rolls around, ask yourself: Did I accomplish this goal? Keep a document to track all of these accomplishments, and pull it out when it's time for your next evaluation. At your next evaluation, don't just ask for a raise or a promotion, demonstrate what is is that you've accomplished which QUALIFIES you for that raise or promotion. By doing so, not only does it demonstrate your ambition and willingness to grow, but also your ability to hold yourself accountable to your word. ❇ Finding a Mentor - Sometimes finding a mentor can be easier said then done. So where is a good place to start? While techniques like cold outreach are always encouraged, it helps to be wise about the way you approach a prospective mentor. First and foremost, you want to be respectful of their time, & thoughtful about your ask; it should be as low lift for them as possible. Look for someone who is ahead of you, is a good leader, has values in line with yours, & lives your dream lifestyle. Be respectful, humble, and ease them into the ask - perhaps start with a few informal coffee chats first. Were you there? What were some of your favorites? ✨

Dan Primack punched HARD in Pro Rata this morning. I'd love to hear from some of my #VC friends - reactions? Honestly, I think it would be hard to argue with him. Plus, I'd offer one more (non-capitalist) reason that private unicorns should go public sooner - it's for the public good. When unicorns stay private well beyond their hyper-growth phase it excludes retail (Main Street) investors from participating in any of the company's appreciation. Google went public at $23 billion -- now worth $1.7 trillion. Amazon went public at $300 million -- now worth $1.8 trillion. A lot of regular folks made a lot of money because they were able to get into these one-in-a-lifetime companies at "reasonable" valuations in the public markets. Thoughts? #VC #venture #venturecapital #investing #investments #PE #privateequity

This week's #tufstory highlights, Phil Libin, the immigrant co-founder of a personal favorite app: Evernote. A few nuggets from his experience building Evernote: 🔶 Build the product for yourself or a community you already know well 🔶 For a product to succeed, it needs to be great at something. It's fine if it's not very good in a lot of other things 🔶 Don't try to change everyone's mind. Always take people from yes to yeah, definitely. #immigrantfounders #startups #productmanagement #immigrant

Well thought out follow up emails after an interview are critical. A well-written follow-up is crucial when seeking a job. It serves as a testament to your professionalism and courtesy, showcasing your dedication to the position and the company. Additionally, a follow-up email reaffirms your interest in the role, ensuring that you remain on the radar of the hiring team. A thoughtful follow-up provides a chance to clarify any key points discussed during the interview, allowing you to emphasize your qualifications or address any additional information. By sending a well-crafted follow-up, you can differentiate yourself from other candidates and leave a lasting impression on the interviewer. Remember, the follow-up is not just a courtesy; it is a strategic step towards securing the job opportunity.

How do you bring a start up mentality to a merger of two 100+ year old organizations? This is part of the vision that David Newell, ACSW and team are bringing to Akin (formerly Children's Home Society of Washington). Part of their process has to be letting go of past legacies. Listen to how Akin has decided to sunset all of their child welfare programs to create space to focus on investing in families and pursuing healing and justice. Dave is very clear that you can’t have a foot in both worlds, you can’t be in foster care and be for the well-being of families. What do you think, is it possible to be both? In a time when child welfare is talking a lot about wellbeing this is a critical question. #merger #startup #vision #leasership #justice #transformation #childwelfare https://lnkd.in/eREytadK
